Because it's a miracle coming from Netherrealm, their comic book character designs were mostly awful, but they've matured enough to make a ninja clone like Reptile finally looking good.

One thing that hurt reptile's style over time is being stuck with the 'lackey' job. Like not even a notable subordinate to the big bad, just the mid-level antagonist. So its definetly really nice to see him be his own man for once.
As a suffering Ermac fan I eagerly await his visual history, in between generous puffs of kopium
The artsts kept giving Ermac sick, dope looking skins. Only for all the Ermac stans at ERS to go on vacation when they finally put him in the game now we get fugly mummy man.

I loved how he visually evolved and devolved throughout the franchise history, tying into lore and all that.
One thing I do like about mk9 and mkx reptile is his animalistic stance he has. That hunched over like a predator about to pounce look
Reptile shapeshifting between human and lizard was a good call. Players can have the best of both worlds.

Words cannot describe my hype for this Reptile. Reptile has always been my favourite character in MK, and this version of him captures everything about him that I love. I love that he's both capturing the human form AND the lizard form in the same gameplay.

Human reptile was always my favorite but when he turned reptilian he was always just made goofy. Glad they were able to make both be cool af in mk1

Reptile is the only ninja in MK1 to have that traditional MK ninja look but in a more grounded style. It's pretty much his very first suit when he first debuted but modernized. He's got the black sleeveless hoodie with the green sash going over it with a butt load of details and it looks amazing.

I remember unlocking the hidden fight against Reptile in the arcades on MK1. I though he was so sick. So much mystery back then. 30 years on and the character is still just as awesome.
This could make for a great Retrospective MK Series! Getting to see the characters’ different designs through the series

A design i love for reptile is actually from the scorpion's revenge, where he takes the mkx design but actually makes him look like a gator! I honestly wish Reptile in mk1 had armor on his alt form so its just not pure gator but i still love mk1 reptile for still having his beast form

They call him 'Syzoth' in the MK 2021 movie, so it's definitely Reptile
He was called Syzoth earlier in one of Raiden's intro dialogues in MKX. Way earlier than the 2021 slop

I like his new redesign. It's the right balance of Green Ninja Man and Lizard Boi.
God. I still remember MK the movie. I was 9 or 10. That soundtrack, especially with Reptile, was friggen timeless.

I honestly think his Armageddon design is my absolute favorite. Keeps the lizard monster but keeps the ninja while making him look different from the other ninjas (though he looks a little too similar to Ermac but it still works in my opinion). MKX would be great if it didn't have the drab MKX color scheme.

I really hope they give him an alt costume based on his first movie appearance. I'm also really hoping with these visuals they can make classic costumes that look like they came straight from the original production of the first game.

Not only that, it looks like his back story and origin will have more depth. For the past MK's Reptile was always a henchman, but they didn't expand the character beyond his origins. We all knew he's Zaterran, now what?

Honestly, I love that they're giving some of these former jobbers an actual place in the world other than on the other end of Liu Kang's fist.
I love the pallet swap ninjas, best look imo.
Part of the cool factor also involves a lot how he's handled in the story, and for decades Reptile has always been just a henchman, he has some stuff going on with being the last of his kind, but they never do anything with it outside of arcade endings.
Hell, MK9 Reptile didn't even get a speaking role and in MKX he's still just the guy whoever his boss is sends to get beaten up by the heroes.
MK1 reptile already sticks out a lot because he's not a henchman, he's a sly lizard boi, an outcast from his own people and even though he's gonna join Liu Kang, he just OOZES personality, he's the cool sneaky guy who knows the streets and can back you up, and I love that!
I'll never forget the disappointment of MK4's Reptile ending which has you watch him get betrayed and die by the hands of Shinnok😂
Couldn't agree more. It felt like every single other Mortal Kombat character had a personal story and motivation, and then there was Reptile, who's story was "loyal henchman". He really didn't have a motivation, story, or purpose beyond that. It's like Netherrealm never really knew what to do with him. They gave him a little bit more of a story of being one of the few Zeteran lizard people of Outworld, but that was about it. In MK1, he not only seems to be presumably on team good-guy (barring any traitor revealed plot twist that he's still been working for Shang Sung this whole time, which would be a disappointment), but has personal motivation and a much stronger presence. I'll admit, I'm sort of left wondering "seems awfully convenient that taking human form was just a mutation he developed" as well as "why does his human transformation include tribal tattoos and clothes", but I'm likely just overthinking it. The new setup of being both the human ninja and a reptilian, with said reptilian being more bestial than humanoid, is an interesting hybridization that really makes him stand apart.
He doesnt have half the personality he did in the older timelines. Then, he was benevolent and had interests beyond his own, especially for a "bad guy". Now he just seems like a Chad, a sigma Chad (which I cool, but it doesnt beat the old Reptile)

There are now 2 people who have a LOT of cosmetics changes in the history of fighting games. One is Reptile with a lot of design changes on every MK title, and Athena Asamiya who changes a lot not just her costumes but also her hairstyles in every KOF title.
By the way, Yoshimitsu has a lot of it too.
Onaga was basically an evolved possessed reptile. So Technically, *adjusts my glasses and take out my buck teeth*, he was in Deception and you missed him.
Facts, I wonder if someone will be Onaga's vessel in MK1.
I mean, MK4 Reptile has one of my all time favorite fatalities: Just savagely munch on your face until it's a bloody skull! Freaking skin crawling good...

I never understood the hate MK5 reptile gets. It's honestly my favorite version of him.
Yeah I couldn't help but notice that the closer he got to generic ninja man the more Max liked the design.

mk4 reptile is a abomination in my eyes and dont know how people could like it. mk9/x are fine, but at that point id just want him to go back to being a human again.

MK1 FINALLY got Reptile right! He’s not a man, and he’s not The Lizard from Spider-Man, he’s BOTH in this game.
I especially love that he can shift from his human form to his reptilian form mid combo. And his outfit is without question the coolest of all the ninjas so far in this game.
He has SO MUCH personality in his ninja outfit. Since he has a completely different side to him they could've settled for him being a pallete swap like Smoke is, but no, they gave his human form a design that REALLY gives him an identity. My favorite design in MK1 by far.

A lot of people trying to act like Reptile isn't one of the freak characters, of the MK roster. Even when he's a human, he's still a weirdo green guy who pretends his arms are snakes or a mouth when he fights.
Never apologize, it was amazing and so was shaolin monks Reptile.
Deadly Alliance, Shaolin Monks & MK9/MKX is honestly always gonna be awesome to me. I don’t mind human Reptile but I think when they make him super reptilian lizard like it makes him more unique. I really do enjoy the take in MK1 though, I think it’s awesome we got both forms. And no Reptile didn’t do the head wraps first, Deception Ermac had them first before Shaolin Monks came out. I just don’t like Reptile looking human because he loses that unique look more, so that’s why MK1 nailed it. 3D era Reptile gets way too much hate & I’ll never get it because it’ll always be cooler to me.

I’m literally on the other side when it comes to reptile and my reasons aren’t any more valid than yours. Never minded the pure reptile form but I strongly prefer the mysterious reptile hiding in a human form. I do think they hit a sweet spot giving all fans close to what they want

As soon as I saw Reptile in the trailer, I was immediately impressed.
He’s the perfect imagining of the character, and how he should have always been.
A shapeshifting human/reptilian creature.
A shame we didn't get to cover Reptile in Mortal Kombat Deception. Then again, it would be like saying "if you were possessed, you were there." Still, I did like how out of all the endings from Deadly Alliance that was considered "canon," one of the biggest ones was Reptile getting possessed by Onaga.
Slight sarcasm aside, it really was fasinating to look at Reptile's overall evolution of where he started to where he ended up in the original timeline, the alternative timeline, and what little knowledge we got for the current timeline (and how the current timeline has probably been the most favorable for him out of the three. At least outside of the whole "my people despised me because my human form was too handsome" part).
I like to think that Reptile is such a jobber, Liu Kang decide to reset the entire timeline and make him Hotter.

The stance not only looks silly but it is actually really good in gameplay and it is the main reason why Reptile is top 3 in MKDA

I do really love Reptile's new human form but I gotta say I am not digging the lizard form. I think him transforming at all is a cool idea but I just think the design could have used another pass. Looks weird.

I agree that it's time for him to get a W. But it's always been awesome the way he gets screwed over. His ending in mk4 is my favorite one in that game

There was nothing like seeing MK2 Reptile back in the early 90s. His own unique moves were awesome.
UMK3 Reptile having fast and slow force balls was and is still great. Check out TASes with him.
I really don't get why people don't like reptile as a literal reptile. Its the more unique thing versus him damn near being a copy and paste of the other ninjas. Especially mk x reptile he has the best design behind the new mk 1 version.
Because most of his designs aren't that good.

@senton6599 Not really an objective sentiment held by the fanbase. There's a distinct split on which design people like more or even both. I prefer lizard Reptile just for the sake of not just being (insert color) ninja. Nobody complained when they changed Ermac's design heavily, so why does Reptile get slack for being a reptile?
Max, I have you know reptile's deadly alliance look is more underrated than you think, the design IS good, especially since it's actually cool to see reptile as fully lizard
I have to say that I actually like reptiles lizard design with the tail but I do still like his human design and I am glad that they are use Inc both in MK1.
honestly I like the Deadly Alliance version of Reptile (after the human version obviously) He actually looks like a lizard in that design! I hate when there's an anthropomorphic reptile/lizard person and they don't have the snout. Reminds me of those goombas from the 1993 mario movie; if you're going to have a lizard guy then stop half-assing it!
I always loved reptile since they changed him to a big lizard guy, so seeing him switch between the two I absolutely adore
I 100% agree that this is the best. In MK2 he was my favorite character to use. Going invisible and flipping across the screen back and forward shooting the green orb and everything. I loved "Reptile until they made him non human like. I'm so happy he's humanlike again. MK 2 is my favorite version of "Reptile. Good stuff "Max you're speaking to me with this 👍👍

As a person who likes Reptile, I love his redesign. Lizard man is cool but Human Reptile is definitely really hot and I'm here for it. As soon as I saw him in the MK1 trailer, I was flabbergasted by how amazing he looked. And he became really really cool once I found out he can just switch between forms. I'm absolutely playing him once I get this game.😂

Deadly Alliance Reptile is still my favorite. But I won't deny that his new look from the Banished trailer is the best design he's ever had.
I heard somewhere that Ed Boon always intended Reptile to be literally a reptile, but due to memory issues, they just re-colored subzero. I personally like the human/reptile combo in MK1
I like the cleanness of the MK3/UMK3/MKT ninja designs. It just felt so modern to me as a kid, with the big divided foam pads over the shoulders. I still love that design, but it looks best on Rain if I'm honest.

Whenever I think about Reptile , from Mortal Kombat, I think about his main theme from the film called control by Traci Lords.
It's kind of funny that Max is correct about one thing that in both Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat 3 reptile has the palette swap syndrome. Cuz when reptile was the first secret character in MK1 he only had scorpion Spear and Sub-Zero's freezing at the time.
Man, looking back on Reptile's first appearance, it brings back memories of my friends and I trying to unlock him. It might be easy for the others to fight him but for us, it took us so many tries to beat him T_T

Mkx reptile is actually my favorite. Don't get me wrong I think mk1 is great too, but I prefer lizard man reptile. It kinda already hits the best of both worlds without him essentially ripping off doctor Connors.

I still am gonna miss his MK X design. Now hes back to a human like every- -other-ninja. The transforming back and forth i guess will have to do. It would blow my mind if NRS includes a costume that gives him sort of an MKX base that transforms into the larger lizard. Just one skin. That would also satisfy both sides of reptile fan base, because i know im not the only one.

MKX Reptile for me is peak Reptile. Especially the tournament skin. I've been maining the character since MK2 and he's genuinely my favorite fighting game character of all time. Personally, I prefer them doing a humanoid reptilian hybrid like mkx. That being also really love his look in MK1.

I've always been a huge fan of Lizard Reptile, even more than Human Reptile. I was worried that by making him human they'd take away what made me enjoy him, which is how visually unique he is. Really glad that they made him work in Mk1, but I hope that he has more a hybrid look for one of his alternates.
I'm pretty sure that alt costume Reptile in MK4 is just a green tinged Scorpion.
I love that in MK1 the material hanging off hin in the back is his tail in disguise.

Everybody needs their classic ninja skin, even Ermac. He looked pretty sick in MKX as a ninja! Why Rain never got a classic ninja skin in MK9 is beyond me though.
