Absolute legend. Did this job today. Also replaced the pulleys. Had no idea there was a nut behind the tensioner pulley. That nut fell behind the chain case and is now, one with the engine. For any body reading this, if you loose that nut like I did, you'll need to find an M10 1x25 nut that'll fit in the hole. You'll know what I'm talking about if you make this mistake. I found one with a flange. Just grinded the flange off. Happy DIYing.
Nice vid. The biggest auto repair I’ve done was change a thermostat on an old Ford, but today I did my idler pulley and serpentine belt for my ‘05 Outback 3.0. Minus the couple of hours learning and double checking, the actual fix took me about 30 minutes. Feeling like a champ.
First, I just want to say I'm a big fan of your Subie videos because you give all the steps, part numbers, and torque (I seriously doubt most professional mechanics do always). Wish my jobs went as smooth as yours. Would have been great if you (needed) replaced the tensioner assembly and idler pulley. I'm an industrial mech by trade so very familiar with belt systems in general. It's not always a good tool to just spin the wheels to gauge bearing health. Someone sold the previous owner shiny new everything, and they were all trash with, I guess, was 40k miles. Specifically the tensioner assembly, created excisive belt wear. The bottom left bolt retaining the assembly to the engine is recessed and can not be seen. Luckily Subaru likes 10,12,and 14mm bolts because I started to remove the power steering pump and realized that it couldn't be mounted behind the pump because it was a larger bolt. I'm gonna pick on you only because I know how meticulous you are about fixing a repair. It would have been great if you showed using a level plane to visually see the belt didn't have excess deflection on the pulley wheels. There is ample room on both wheels for adjustment.
Great video, the diagram was especially helpful. Belt was $15 in amazon and took less than 30 minutes. Would've been quicker if my 14mm wrench hadn't walked off
Do you know if an 01-04 ez30 outback radiator will fit and work in an 05? I found out that the 01-04 radiators have a 1” thick core vs 5/8” thick on the 05-09’s. Thanks for all the great videos!
Thank you! I just fix my serpentine belt, by accident I left a broken hose on the engine compartment, this hose fallen to the serpentine belt area and took the belt out... 😬
Just did this lob last night. I also replaced my idler and tensioner (the pulleys where starting to warp.) Want to know if you kow the appropriate torque settings for the idler bolt.
Thank you very much! And I can't tell you how nice it is tho have found this page. I have been looking at my car and just diving in because I can never find videos on the gen 2 OBW H6 engines. Great work.
Same here at 160K. I was starting to consider doing the same thing. Granted it feels like everything has went wrong with the car. haven't driven the car since the middle of September last year but the thing runs beautifully now and I can't wait to finish her this weekend. Do you have a video on replacing the ATF lines? last guy to touch them tightened them way to much and caused a leak. Didn't notice until the car sat for two months and started smoking of the heat shield over the catalytic converter.

+zcamaross09 It is explained in Russian, but you do not understand ... If you fly off the tool that's just you hold the roller with the spring, at the time of dressing belt finger on the alternator pulley - tear off the finger, God forbid.
How do you tighten the belt after it has been replaced mine is too loose and I don't want to risk firing it up and when I crank the tensioner it just goes down then comes right back up into its previous position along with my socket wrench

Thanks again for the DIY vids. Replaced our 2013 Outback 4 cyl CVT model's this weekend. 10 minute job.
Very helpful. Surprised at how easy that looked. I'm about to find out how easy. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the video!

+Ethan Maloy I noticed it myself, that's why I started making videos on it. Such great cars. Love mine. 275,000 miles and going.

+Ethan Maloy I did replace mine from the remote hard lines to the radiator with oem hoses, unfortunately I didn't film it.
My belt slips off after replacing, what could cause that?
Bad tensioner, misalignment, incorrect belt.
How do I replace the crank pulley on this vehicle?
Remove the (4) 10mm bolts that secure the center cover. Remove the center cover. Remove the 22mm crank bolt. Remove the crank pulley.
Thanks so much! @@MrSubaru1387
You're welcome. 👍🏻
I did this today started the car and the idler pulley broke lol!!! just my luck

+zcamaross09 this is not the order of the assembly, it is simply the designation mechanism for the device.
