  • A short(ish) video showing you the complete process of swapping out the serpentine belt, tensioner and idler pulley in a 2001 Subaru Outback 3.0 liter, H6 vehicle. It was done in the middle of a long road trip using only my "portable tool kit" (so you can see how to do it without any special tools).
If this video helps you in any way, I'd sincerely appreciate it if you could like the video and subscribe to my channel. That will help me continue to add future videos that might help you again (including one showing replacement of the rear differential mounting bushings) and will make it easier to find my videos in the future. Thanks!

My wife has the same vehicle. The bearings on the tensioner pulley seized, and the pulley fell off. I will be replacing the tensioner once I get the part. Job looks pretty easy. I like that your video gets straight to the procedure, without unnecessary chit-chat.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm with you... The videos with five minutes describing what the video will eventually be about are sooooo annoying. ;-). Next time, tell your wife to let you know that something sounds funny before the car starts shedding parts. ;-)

Not sure if you meant "great" or "freak" but I'll take either... ;-)

Super handy! My tensioner is frozen and tore my drive belt. Did you have a link or part # for the tensioner?

Here's a link to the rockauto site (for the car I was working on, YMMV). IIRC, I ordered the Gates. Just make sure to get a "name brand" tensioner from a legitimate vendor so you don't end up with a long ride home on a flatbed! ;-) www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/subaru,2001,outback,3.0l+h6,1375107,belt+drive,belt+tensioner,11659

Awesome, thanks! How much coolant did you actually spill?

Almost none. I was kind of surprised, since some cars seem to sit with the upper radiator hose full. This one just wasn't, so I only lost a couple ounces (guessing).

@@Mark_H_DIY Cool thanks, I am ready to do this now and wanted to know how many rags to get :-) Thaks for the quick reply!

I hope yours is like the one I worked on, so you don't end up with too few rags! Good luck with the repair. That's the kind of things that make old Subies happy!
