Reasons why I love your channel. 1. I love the layout of your videos.Demo of the song in the beginning to see what we are gonna learn, and then detailed lessoned and tabs. 2. It seems like you actually research how the guitarist plays it live and you put a lot of effort in making sure it's closest to how it's played. 3. All of your song selections are impeccable and introduced me to some hidden gems. I've never heard of flamin' grooves or television until I stumbled onto your channel and I'm glad I did. 4. The videos are free Thank you Adrian
I heartily second all of that, and will add that no one provides so much detail in such an extremely understandable manner. Every bit is carefully explained, so whether it's an easy song or a more challenging one, the instructions are all there. Kenny's point #2 is a great one too; in some other's lessons it's not always clear what simplifications may have been made. And the tabs, so appreciated!
San Francisco garage band who were into early rock and roll and were forerunners of power pop and punk. This is their best known “hit” today. They had two periods, first in the States when Roy Loney was in the band and then they moved to the UK after he left. Like so many great bands, they were never much of a commercial success. This is a great song and as usual a great lesson. Thanks.
Cyril Jordan reformed the Groovies 2017 with George Alexander from the original band and Chris Wilson from the later band. Roy Loney passed away not that long back. Saw them back in '76 . Think Keith Richards described them as the best rock n roll band in the world ! Certainly the best live band i've ever seen. I noted that Adrian had done a lesson on Big Stars 'September Gurls, be interested to see if goes back as far as my main band the Byrds, be nice to see Clarence White's licks 'examined' in the same way-Adrian has the chops to do it
Brilliant. I had a feeling this might be coming when I saw your Big Star lessons. Reckoned you were a fan of a certain type of music. Love it, nobody else teaches the sort of songs you do.
Charles Sale I’ll have a look, thanks. Adrian though - The Stooges, Joy Division, Capt Beefheart, The Only Ones, Big Star, Flamin Groovies, etc. Just a really discerning selection of proper first class music.
It’s impressive how many hundreds (or thousands) have mastered playing this guitar part, despite it is pitch adjusted and was recorded a step lower in standard tuning! Your performance is absolutely perfect to the released version! The reverb on the intro is the secret sauce❤
I just discovered this song 43 years after it was recorded! Your breakdown is incredible. I'm going to keep at this until I get it right which might be another 43 years. 😀 Thanks as always for the amazing instruction Adrian!
Your channel is awesome. There are many things to love about it, but my favorite thing is your choice of songs. You gravitate toward the good stuff. I think you inspire others to look beyond the big hits.
Hands down the best guitar instruction channel on TH-cam, primarily for two reasons: best song selection; and highest quality instruction available on the internet. Adrian, thank you!
long time viewer first time commenter. You Adrian teach the kinds of song that I love to learn. not only that but you teach them in an impeccable fashion! These are songs for guitarists and I thank you!
As an old punk and post-punk) I do indeed have this single in my collection. But I could never work it out on guitar - so I am in awe of this video. And indeed all the others - a song selection after my own heart. And brilliant lessons.
I think the Flaming Groovies are a pretty underrated band! I mean, they didn't invent the wheel, but they do a damn fine job doing what they do!✌🏽🧡🖤✊🏼✊🏼✊🏼🙏🏼
Thanks Eric. Yes, there have been a couple of occasions where I've come up with an amazing idea for a new video only to find you'd already been there, so I had to re-think damn you!
Wow, this is so cool. I just went from Eric's page to Adrian's to see what was new, and here are my two favorite song teachers talking to each other! Small world I guess. Thanks for all of your great work guys!
The reason it's "tricky" to get the rhythm to sound right on the intro is that you are trying to pick the eighth notes, but on the recording those notes are actually an echo. If you listen to it again, you can hear that the repeated notes aren't evenly spaced between the beats -- they're a little faster than double the song tempo. You can set a delay pedal for a single repeat that is equal in volume to the dry signal and get much closer to the sound by only playing some of the of the notes and let the echo fill in the others. Btw love the channel! Great song selections and great playing.
I subscribed to the channel with this video - I was surprised that I hadn't clicked that button before given that every one of Adrian's videos are wonderful.
Hi..What a great tune..i will never forget first time heard it when released...that intro is so great good job..now i dont have to use my rock of an ear to learn it lol u do a great job...Thanks Dave
Adrian, Thank You so much, a fitting follow on from your tutorial of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates - Shakin' All Over ....Ironically I purchased the RSD 2018 release ( a compilation) by Flamin' Groovies - Grease - this morning !:) Paul - Dallas via London
I had this song on either The Greatest Punk Album in the World Ever!* or The Greatest Punk Album in the World Ever!* 2, double cassettes which rolled around in my car for most of the mid nineties back and forth to bike races. *Ever! as pronounced by Lard on the Mark and Lard Graveyeard Shift. Great lesson Adrian.
Hey Adrian - love the channel. I was at Nick Cave All Points East the other day and I'm pretty sure I caught you playing on the Firestone stage. I stopped and thought "I recognise that guy and that guitar" Good stuff.
Excellent. Flamin Groovies are considered cult RocknRoll . I forgot the Leader’s name but he as quoted as saying something like “ We can now do the Beatles better than the Beatles “ Some people have an attitude towards a derivative sound but I remember a Critic saying that where does it say that total originality solves everything. Asked a local record store Owner non musician with encyclopedic knowledge of music if he had heard of Flamin Groovie , he said “ Shake Some Action “ is one of my favorite songs . I didn’t know this could be played on a Jazzmaster . I thought it was done on a Richenbacher .
excellent , and you are one of the people who give lessons on Magazine,Siouxsie and the Banshees songs (love John Mcgeoch) and lots of other punk era bands which is a real bonus . Do you know any Durutti Column songs ?especially the first two albums, would love a look at this interesting guitarist. thanks again .n.
A band of 2 parts. The original version with Roy A Loney started in the late 60s, and then the Chris wilson era from early 70s till now..Cyril jordan holding it together throughout. I can't say which era was better...almost like 2 different bands, but both versions are excellent. If I had to go to a desert Island and was only allowed to take one Groovies album it would be Teenage Head- simply one of the best rock albums of all time. For a guitarist, theres just so many good tunes to cover or jam along to.
The Flamin’ Groovies “Teenage Head” record is an amazing amalgamation of blues, boogie woogie, rhythm & blues, rockabilly, country rock, & rock ‘n roll all filtered through a late 60’s / early 70’s musical approach!! Dare I say.. song wise & musicianship wise this record stands neck to neck with more celebrated Rolling Stones “Sticky Fingers” album also released the same year ... 1971 The best way I can put it is like this ... Both the Flamin’ Groovies & The Rolling Stones played an updated, mixture of American 40’s - 50’s various roots music styles but where The Rolling Stones tipped their hats more so & were influenced by the Chess Records catalog... The Flamin’ Groovies tipped their own hats & were more influenced by the Sun Records catalog!! Both bands were at the very apex of what Thee Greatest 60’s & 70’s Rock ‘N Roll had to offer & when it comes right down to it ... they were both inspired & spawned from the exact same musical influences but each with an ever so slightly different & unique musical approach that heavily depended on their own regional backgrounds... The Rolling Stones were British Blooze Hounds & Teddy Boys that came of age at the dawn of the 60’s that worshiped at the alter of Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Fats Domino, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, Willie Dixon, Elmore James, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Ike Turner, Jackie Brenston etc etc & The Flamin’ Groovies were American West Coast Greasers & Street Tuffs (& later Mods) that sounded more like a wild gang of southern Hip Cats influenced very much by the likes of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich, Charlie Feathers, Billy Lee Riley, Sonny Burgess, Warren Smith, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Ronnie Self, Buddy Holly, Pat Hare etc etc ... Both the flip side of the same coin ... take your pick !!
Fantastic song and inspiring tutorial as ever. Never heard of the band before, but checking them out learned they have just recently brought out a new record "Fantastic Plastic".Thnx.
I first heard this on a Punk Rock compilation called New Wave in 1978! The album cover had a red background and a vertical inset photo of a punk rocker spitting! Talk about your cynical cash ins? :-D Loads of great non-punk songs but I was barely in my teens and only knew David Bowie and chart songs until Punk blew up in 1977 and my hormones were in overdrive! Gaye Advert, the Slits first album cover, the Country Life album cover from Roxy Music..... Anyhoo, another great tutorial from a great time in rock music, Adrian!
ive got that compilation somewhere some good stuff on it New York Dolls Runaways Little Bob Story. Always tried unsuccessfully to work out the actual beginning to this song the rest is not too difficult although I cant play it as well as Adrian here ha
Close but not quite right... I recorded with Chris Wilson a lot and with Cyril Jordan a little - the two blokes that wrote the song - and where you play a Dsus4 it's a G. Nice to see the song getting another outing, though.
Hi Adrian. I just wanted to say I love your channel and lessons. Despite the fact you are a brilliant player in many genres you seem to really like simpler new wave and punk stuff. One note on this lesson is I found I had to tune a nudge sharp to play with the original recoding. Perhaps they sped it up a bit when mixing.
I think the intro does start on 1, but of the SECOND bar of the two-bar phrase, if this is eighth notes. So I think the B minor triad that’s played without the melodic movement is the beginning of the entire phrase, rather than the A. So, it goes B mi - G - B mi (with melodic movement) - A. Each chord gets two beats. The A also just sounds more like a resolution than the beginning of a phrase. I could be wrong. But I’m also a drummer and figured this song out for the drum part in the past. :)
Really nice work on a great song. I wondered if you have ever looked at "Starry Eyes" by The Records? it features great guitar work on a power pop classic.
I had that New Wave album too. If I remember correctly the New York Dolls had a track on it. As much of a cynical cash it indeed was, I wish I still had it and deeply regret selling all my vinyl. Another great addition to your site Adrian.Thank you. I'll enjoy learning this. You always manage to come up with songs that haven't had much lesson coverage on TH-cam. How about some late 70s pub rock R&B. I'd love to see Dr Feelgood and Wilko Johnson's style covered. It can be done with a pick too.
The stuff I had on vinyl back then...12" French label Atmosphere/Dead Souls, a 12" Anarchy In The UK (seriously) which I flipped over once and became a Sex Pistols B-sides addict, Gimmix by John Cooper Clarke in orange plectrum shaped vinyl, the first Scritti Politti 4 track EP on Rough Trade, a re-issue of Good Sculptures with the "dodgy" B-side of I Wanna Be Your Man, the white vinyl freebie EP that came with the Stranglers' Black & White album, seeing Joy Division live...!
Great power-pop pioneers. I sam them a few years ago they were great and they released a new album last year that had so e good sounds. You should check out the Real Kids from Boston, another great power-pop band.
It’s a real treasure when you find people like you that find pleasure in teaching things he likes without boasting his own skills

Thank you Adrian
If you get a chance to see the Flamin' Groovies (or Television) live go see them

Brilliant. I had a feeling this might be coming when I saw your Big Star lessons. Reckoned you were a fan of a certain type of music. Love it, nobody else teaches the sort of songs you do.
Check out 'slackerVK' on TH-cam too... he doesn't quite do tutorials like this but he plays through a selection of great songs.
Charles Sale I’ll have a look, thanks. Adrian though - The Stooges, Joy Division, Capt Beefheart, The Only Ones, Big Star, Flamin Groovies, etc. Just a really discerning selection of proper first class music.
Best guitar lessons on youtube. For years there was never lessons on any of these classic songs. Flaming groovies, big star
Man, you really nailed the intro! The echo is perfect. Sounds just like the record. Nice job.
It’s impressive how many hundreds (or thousands) have mastered playing this guitar part, despite it is pitch adjusted and was recorded a step lower in standard tuning! Your performance is absolutely perfect to the released version! The reverb on the intro is the secret sauce❤

Your channel is awesome. There are many things to love about it, but my favorite thing is your choice of songs. You gravitate toward the good stuff. I think you inspire others to look beyond the big hits.
Perfect, didn’t expect to find a lesson this good for the song and thanks to whoever requested it!
Many thanks!! Your choice of songs, taste and theory/gear explanations is one of the best I’ve seen. Love this song.
Hands down the best guitar instruction channel on TH-cam, primarily for two reasons: best song selection; and highest quality instruction available on the internet. Adrian, thank you!
Very kind of you to say so Haukur! Really pleased you're enjoying the videos.

Awesome song from the past, one of my favorites, thank you so much.

So many classics brilliantly analysed and played great work
I love the little historical bits you do, showing us the LP in this case.
I hope you make it to a million subscribers soon, your my fav guitar channel
So good, yet again choosing a perfect jam and getting the guitar and tone so spot on.
I think the Flaming Groovies are a pretty underrated band! I mean, they didn't invent the wheel, but they do a damn fine job doing what they do!✌🏽🧡🖤✊🏼✊🏼✊🏼🙏🏼
I really like what you're doing.ive seen a few guitar lessons on TH-cam and you are in the top 5% .
I like how you explained the intro triads
Don't get better than this! Thank you.
Yet again we are in sync my friend!! I don't teach this one on my channel, but we do cover it in my band :-)
Well done, Adrian!
Thanks Eric. Yes, there have been a couple of occasions where I've come up with an amazing idea for a new video only to find you'd already been there, so I had to re-think damn you!
Ha!
If I'm ever over there in the UK, it'd be really cool to combine forces with an epic dual-bespeckled-youtube-instructor vid ☜(˚▽˚)☞
Haha yes, let's do it, sure it would create a TH-cam sensation.
I would fly to London to see this in person. Can I get a Neil Young Sixths and Johnny Marr This Charming Man dual lesson?
Wow, this is so cool. I just went from Eric's page to Adrian's to see what was new, and here are my two favorite song teachers talking to each other! Small world I guess. Thanks for all of your great work guys!

That Jazzmaster sounds phenomenal! You’re strumming is equally sick too, pal. Great riffing.
What a great song! Thank you so much for teaching it to us. Another Flamin' Groovies song to check out is Slow Death.
Great lesson of a classic song!
Thank you very much. I loved the lesson. I appreciate the effort you put into. Cheers
Well done...very unique chord phrasing.
Adrian, you’re a man of taste.
Just my favourite band!! Thanx so much for your good tastes Adrian, from Elvis to the Chameleons... The Best YT place indeed! Risto from France

Excelente video gracias por compartir y saludos y abrazos enormes.
Brilliant !love this tune
Good job!
God ! Finally someone do it !! Thanks thanks thanks !
I think the intro does start on 1, but of the SECOND bar of the two-bar phrase, if this is eighth notes. Another fabulous lesson!! Any chance of doing a lesson on "Alison" by Elvis Costello?
Thanks, Adrian!
I had that New Wave album too. If I remember correctly the New York Dolls had a track on it. As much of a cynical cash it indeed was, I wish I still had it and deeply regret selling all my vinyl.
