I live in one of the cottages in the village, right on the sea front. I had at the time lived there for 20 years and had never seen or experienced anything like this in all that time. As it got dark, the storm got worse and worse until it was so bad that I couldn't have left my cottage if I had wanted to. Around 6pm the waves were crashing against the front of the house, luckily i had the windows boarded up that afternoon. The storm doors were also closed and I honestly believed that apart from having to mop up any sea water that came under the two front doors, that id be ok. By 7pm the sea was crashing over the roof of my house and the house was literally shaking every time a wave hit. At one point i was looking out of my bedroom window and i couldn't even see the sea wall or the road outside of my cottage! There were 4 heavy picnic benches that had once been outside of our cottages, but had now been picked up by the sea and washed away. At this point i still thought id be ok and the cottage would be fine. Around 7.30 when it should have now been low tide, the sea had not receded at all. Back downstairs standing in the lounge, i suddenly heard a roar that very much sounded like an aeroplane taking off, seconds later i was covered head to foot in sea water! A massive wave had hit the house and smashed through both of the front doors, not 1 but 2 doors! Standing in 2 ft of water i looked around and everything i owned was underwater and ruined. Just when i thought it couldn't get any worse, I ran up stairs as the waves swept in and out, to suddenly smell smoke. I realised it was coming from the lounge, where an electrical socket had caught fire, then all of the electrical boxes started popping and smoking. I really thought i was going to die, not through drowning, but by electricucion or the effects of fire. I was eventually rescued by the fire brigade, but it is an experience i will never, ever forget. I wasn't afraid of the sea before that night, but surviving something like that gives you a huge respect for the power of the sea. Unfortunately I didn't have any insurance at the time as many insurance companies won't touch me, and the ones that will are horrendously expensive! Two years on and I've gorton over the ordeal, but for a long time I no longer wanted to live so close to the ocean!

Julia McIntosh thank you for sharing your story. That must have been so scary. I hope you never have to experience anything like that again. I used to want a beach front home but after seeing all these videos on You Tube I would never want to live near the sea!

Wow. I spent my holidays there as a youth. Beautiful calm days getting sunburn and catching fish. The best memory of my life. It’s stunning. This is quite the contrast 👀

I was part of a film crew driver a few years ago. We were filming here Ms Perregrin's Home for Curious Children.

The houses here are rented to local people by Caerhays Estate. Some of the properties here were trashed because the Estate do not carry out essential maintenance on the properties and refused to carry out work to prevent storm damage with locals having to board up their own houses. This storm was lethal made more lethal to those on the front line by a lack of duty of care by the landowner/property owners. Shame on Caerhyays Estate who spend hundreds of thousands every year on turning old buildings on the estate into luxurious holiday homes while neglecting their hard working, regular paying tenants.

They really do need to extend the height of the seawall at portholland, they extended the height at newlyn if I remember, due to the amount of sea flooding, maybe wrong though lol..
