  • Let's meet an ethnic minority of Russia - the Yakut who live in the coldest inhabited of the Earth. We will get to know their culture, get to know the locals and hear their life stories and concerns about Global warming. Global warming isn't felt much for us, but it is already very palpable and visible in the Russian Arctic.
    Time codes:
0:00 Welcome to the Far North!
2:10 What is the "warm" temperature for the Yakut people?
3:47 How does the coldest city function during winter?
7:05 What winter activities do locals have here in Yakutsk?
9:22 Ice bathing. How to prepare for it?
    13:31 Yakut language
14:44 Climate change, permafrost and heatwaves in Yakutia

Awesome video. And you made a good point at the end about traveling. All this time i thought the people of Yakutsk are struggling and living a harsh life because the media present it that way, but now i see that the people love their homeland and they enjoy their life. It's not much different than other cold places, such as Scandinavian countries, Canada and some places in USA, except it's just a bit colder and people got used to it. I would like to watch a video where two people from the coldest and hottest places on Earth switch sides for few days, that would be interesting.

I study in St Petersburg. When I moved here from my hometown I lived in an old dormitory, where we had no fridges. We used to put our food in plastic bags and hang it outside the window. However, we couldn't keep the food for many days during summer and early autumn. So we found some girls, who would give us an old fridge for free, if we could clean it ourselves. Ironically, when we finally cleaned the fridge, almost all the students were moved to a new dormitory with a modern fridge in every room. Still, the old refrigerator served us well for few days.
By the way, the coldest temperature I have ever experienced in my hometown (Vologda) was -46 degrees Celsius. It was quite unusual, because before that the temperature rarely fell below -30 degrees. Nevertheless, in russia all the houses in cities and towns are connected to the central heating system, so that wasn't a problem at all.

How interesting. I wonder if they are related to Samoyeds.
Samoyeds have little to no scent, they shed UNGODLY amounts of fur, in the west they are always white (because the Iron Curtain went up just after the Samoyedic people were contacted by I believe English explorers - 9 dogs came out and all were white), their fur can be knitted into wool. (Nearly) all Samoyeds in the West are descendants of just those 9 dogs.
Samoyeds had 3 jobs - pulling sled, herding reindeer, and sleeping with children to keep them warm at night.
Samoyeds in Russia can be white, black, or red and they are a bit thinner than the ones you see in the west. The Nenet's version of a Samoyed looks very similar to a Yakutian Laika dog. If they are scentless, and have EXTREMELY fine hair, I bet they are related.

@@Kasonas I don't know. When I was in college my neighbor had a Samoyed, and just fell in love with that dog. Such a nice animal, so when I got a steady job out of college, I joined an animal rescue, and started fostering for them.
They have such a good personality, but they make up with it in hair.
Do Yakutian Laikia's have similar personalities?
BTW - you probably already know this but I always tell it to people. If your Samoyed ever gets a "hot spot" a fungal infection, it's LIKELY because you didn't entirely remove the soap from their coat in their last bath. I used to bathe mine, rinse them out, and refill the tub, and rinse them out again. I'd fluff their fur on every inch of their body on the second rinse to make certain everything was out.
Their hair is so fine it's difficult to entirely wash them out.

James I live like i mentioned in my comment above live in an isolated area , a bit just me myself and I. With covid they said keep a distance of 2 meters between people. The nearest person I had was 15km. When you live in these worlds you don’t think of politics , tv media, or hate as you got no time doing it. My life is survive be happy and love thy neighbor . 😊❄️🏔 as that neighbor may be a different color country but that neighbor could save your life . You think there are people that live on an ice cube , never switch off there car, put there meat 🥩 out the window . Etc and smile . No politics . The world has to learn to smile even if the sky is grey. 🏔❄️❄️❄️😊🐻

Somewhat naive. You cannot break bread if you are being invaded. The two countries were friends, as far as the people go, and families were mixed. No more, I think. This will take decades to repair.

Coldest place on earth? Lol dunno about that. I'm in Canada near the lakes. Last winter was soft as a pillow but the one before that was cold. Feb kicked off with two -43c days in a row. Didn't matter if I had the block heater plugged in, still had to double cycle the glow plugs to get the truck started and barely at that. Come spring found a bunch of dead varmints that didn't make it through winter.
I ain't even where it's real cold like the territories or the Alaskan interior.
So cold there you'll wanna spend the night at the bar you've been drinking at lest you freeze to death doing the stumbly-bumbly home.
