this movie hits so different to girlies with rough mother-daughter relationships. the “i just wish that you liked me” “of course i love you” “but do you like me?” always makes me wanna sob lmao
Same. It broke me and continues to 😭
this movie gives perfect visual representation of the relationship between me and my mom
i showed it to my mom & she just scoffed & laughed & agreed with the mom in ladybird the whole time. when the film ended she silently left the room without a word, then my father had to tell me “i got the message, don’t worry” after she exited lol
Especially the store scene when they’re shopping for a dress… the exact thing my mom and I do 😭 it’s exhausting
@@samanthasookchan418I showed it to my mum as well and she HATED it. Hit too close to home and she felt personally offended that that’s how I saw our relationship even though I found it endearing. We had a big fight afterwards and she didn’t talk to me the rest of the night. She was never good at taking any type of criticism about her parenting. 😂
I told my mom this once and she was sooo offended and confused 😅
exactly! one of the reasons why it's one of my favorite films
can confirm this is an incredibly accurate depiction of most mother-daughter relationships
Oo I wouldn’t say most, there’s definitely a lot of healthy secure mother-daughter relationships out there, but certainly represents a lot
@@ambriaashley3383 Agree -- I have a really good relationship with my mom most of the time, but when we fight we can FIGHT - this is the only movie I've seen that shows how heartbreaking it can be but also how you can be kind of back to "normal" in 5 mins.
@@14Juicyheartsseems like it’s actually passive aggressive if it’s like this…
Idk I watched w a group of my girlfriends and we all found the story compelling but the relationship not really accurate to our own w our respective mothers. But I can see how real that relationship is
@@Honey70708 no, not really. It’s possible to be so close to someone that you hurt each other accidentally and feel able to express anger sincerely but overall understand it’s not a huge deal and be able to make up. Also, I said my relationship with my mom is good most of the time, which is different from the relationship in the movie which is bad most of the time.
the scene where they are bickering & shopping and then all of a sudden find a cute dress they both love and they both forget about being annoyed by each other for a moment is so mother-daughter and also sister-sister coded
When the guys said “that’s weird” at the scene in the second hand shop and I am 100% certain I’ve had those exact moments with my mum lol. Thank you for not being dismissive but realising that you can’t really speak on that experience
bryce's ability to be so sharp in catching small details and the core message of a film even at first watch blows me away. i love how open and understanding you guys are to different experiences/perspectives that movies offer !
Being someone who’s from Sacramento and has since moved away, the driving shots at the end always make me cry. I cross that bridge to visit my grandma, I grew up getting burgers with my dad at Cookies, etc. I feel like she visualized my whole childhood in 90 seconds.
“You skipped right over 3003.” 😂
And 2112
I'm so glad she was accepting of what Danny was going through. She could have focused on the fact that he cheated and hurt her and that would have been valid. But she instead focused on his struggle with his sexuality and the weight of not only being scared to tell his family but scared to be his true self. 👏🏼 21:09
i LOVE this movie. it’s such a good depiction of the way a lot of mothers and daughters end up 💔
I forgot how good lady bird is😭😭😭 I haven’t seen it in a while
This is really one of those films where it takes having a specific experience (in this case, a complicated mother-daughter relationship) to fully be able to appreciate it but I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.
jesus bryce would NOT stop laughing 😂
I love this movie so much. It was so relatable to me in almost every way. I went to Catholic school, and I wanted to leave my hometown for New York, I was very theatrical, and like most teenage girls I fought hard with my mom but grew up and discovered we have a very similar personality. I'm a sucker for mother/daughter relationships because my mom and I are very close. Timothée Chalamet was on the come-up this year. He had Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird, I saw CMBYN at Sundance so I knew him from there first and then saw him play a total asshole here lmao.
I watched this with my mom, and we had a very similar relationship and I think she was completely oblivious to the fact that she was basically the mom in this lol. Long story short, we haven't spoken in several years now.
oh, the one for the girlies with mommy issues. this one hits hard, saoirse is such a gem! ❤
Wait until you see edge of seventeen 😁😁😁
oh my god they need to watch it!!!
@@jazleenluna they are 😭 it’s on patreon rn and it’ll be ok TH-cam soon
Don’t get me started with that movie😭
their mother and daughter relationship is very accurate
Her relationship with Sacramento is symbolic of her relationship with her mother
was literally craving for this one ngl guys
very accurate mom and daughter relationship even though if you haven’t seen mom like this or can’t relate; which is GOOD ahaha!
12:40 man JAJJSJAJSJ “one 😃☝️”
The actress who played Lady Bird's friend is actually Jonah Hill's sister
This is exaclty my experience of my relationship with my mom as well. She's the person that will always remind me how I'm not doing enough and will act like im the biggest dissapointment in her life. But is also the most comforting figure whenever life gets to me. I feel like a lot of girls relate to this
They look like the Wiggles!! LMAO
18:26 so funny how your heads all moved in sync to check
I know my fellow Dance Academy fans gotta be here somewhere hehe I remember being so shocked that Christian from Dance Academy was Lady Bird's brother lol
omg I’ve found my ppl 🙏🏼
@@glitterflyy yessss we’re here!! :)
The way I dropped everything when this appeared in my feed! This is one of my absolute favorite movies ever. Yes, ever. As someone who grew up less than two hours from Sacramento, and had a not too dissimilar relationship with my mother (I think we had that "dragging the feet" conversation verbatim), who came of age around that same time frame - when I saw Lady Bird for the first time I felt like I was watching MY story being told. I don't think everyone will connect with this movie, but I sure did. I'm so happy it exists!
i cannot believe you guys watched this one, i'm thrilled!!! this is the most accurate depiction of a mother-daughter relationship i've ever seen in film -- the way a nice moment can turn into a battle before you even understand what went wrong was so realistic and so gut wrenching to watch. this movie just feels like someone reached inside your chest and pulled out all the lingering turmoil from when you were seventeen and felt like no one on earth understood you, and then put it to screen; greta gerwig is a singular talent in that regard. thank you for watching this so thoughtfully, even for the moments you couldn’t 100% relate to! great vid as always!!
female woody would be "Jessie" btw, lol I had a jessie toy growing up
Just discovered your channel and have binge-watching everything!! Idk if you take recommendations but you all should watch The King with Timothee Chalamet too. It's amazing and and way underrated and surprisingly I haven't really been able to find anyone else reacting to it!
Yooo yes The King is fantastic!
Omg YES !!!
I was so fortunate to be a senior in high school when this came out! Me and my mom’s relationship was the exact too! I felt like the black sheep so this movie has a special place in my heart!
As a goofy theatre kid I can tell you we were actually pretty wild.
being from sacramento, living my whole life here, and watching this movie gave me an appreciation for it. idk what i would do if i didn’t live here
“being this funny” I CRIED while watching 😭
The passive aggressiveness from mom is spot on although I was much worse to my mom. I also was about 19 when I started to see her as a person and empathize with having to deal with the crap I put her through.
ladybird is sooo soo good and relatable
haven't watched ladybird in full again since high school because the mother daughter relationship was so spot on and hit very very close to home. Wanna give a hug to all the girlies with similar comments saying how they relate to the film on that level as well. hope everyone has a support system around them
For me I think the mom was just sad that Lady Bird kept talking about how she wanted more, but was never really thankful for how hard her mom and dad were working to give her what she had.
I'm not sure I ever truly experienced what being triggered means until I watched Lady Bird. My mom was Laurie Metcalf in this movie and I can't tell you how many times I wanted to do something like bail out of a moving car.
The kid in Manchester by the Sea is so good in that movie! That's why I want yall to watch it so bad if you already havn't
Theyll need tissues fir that one
mom and daughter relationships are so complex
the way i literally searched for this yesterday because I wanted to know if you guys had watched it
32:40 defending that super short sex scene by saying it was a couple seconds vs one second is a little suss but still love ya bud 🤣
Hahaha, being from Connecticut, that opening scene always cracks me up. I, Tonya is another great one. As well as Lost in Translation.
That actor jake mcdorman from shameless (the teacher from the beginning of the movie) also starred in this HILARIOUS and really amazing show I think y'all would really love, called 'Limitless'. My long-winded explanation of it:
it's based on a movie with the same name. Mcdorman plays this slacker/stoner guy who starts taking a pill that makes him just impossibly smart & observant, but it has deadly side effects (UNLESS...). He uses it for about 50% good-of-humanity stuff- aka he reluctantly teams up w some equally-reluctant detectives who need his stupid smart brain to stop ppl from abusing/enhancing the drug- and 50% mischief and loveable stupid chaos. the main actress is from 'Dexter', too. it's like watching the funny/clever parts of Good Will Hunting, but amped up to 100 and more of a crime-fighting mystery than a crime-atonement coming-of-age story.
I forget edge of seventeen is also a coming of age, complicated mother daughter relationship as well lol, been a minute since I’ve seen it tbh but I used to watch it all the time as a comfort movie. Just like perks
I remember watching it in the theatre and it was a truly a fun adventure. Saoirse Ronan is brilliant 👏🏽
I'm glad someone else found this funny. My sister and I were the only ones dying laughing in a packed theatre 😂
Yea a mother daughter relationship can be complicated and it does switch from screaming to being agreeable sometimes which is why it’s like a switch. Could just be a thing with non communicative families
Twenty mins in and I realize I’m wearing a nirvana shirt like zuff😂
11:25 lol 😂, I love you guys! Y’all like my best friends, who I watch tv with occasionally 🦋
I JUMPED WHEN I SAW THIS my favorite reaction channel finally reacting to my favorite movie ever im actually so happy rn i always get sad why not many ppl reacted to lady bird it's such a gem but i knew the reel-time boys got meee
this takes place in my home town!
edit: and it was filmed in sacramento too!
This was shot in Sacramento! I was born and raised here. All the places they went are normal everyday stores/neighborhoods in Sac that are still around.
The way Rob just dropped Shameless and Manchester by the sea out of Lady Bird is just amazing!!
as a former theatre kid, this was an accurate portrayal of high school theatre productions.
Lady Bird received 5 Academy Award nominations including best actress and supporting (Saorise Ronan and Laurie Metcalf), as well as best original screenplay and director for Greta Gerwig, including best picture. I think you have to have a sister or have observed that relationship with your mother and sister(s) to see how authentic this is played out. Not to say that this is a one-size-fits-all type of relationship, but it one that I've recognized with my sisters and mother growing up that was similar. I think the mother gets a lot of flack, but what I don't seem to hear is that she has the pressure of being the breadwinner and doing the heavy-lifting working hard as a nurse and supporting her family while having a rebellious daughter. Also, there aren't as much female coming-of-age stories told and directed by women. In the past, not many female led movies were written by women and directed by them too. There still is a big gender disparity in Hollywood and even across the board in film. Thankfully, things are pushing for more female told/directed films, but still a ways to go. Perhaps, this specific relationship dynamic in this film seems foreign to you because a woman wrote, drawing from her experiences, considering this is a much acclaimed and nominated film. Almost 20 years before, there was also a film called Real Women Have Curves with similar themes and dynamics, but from a Latina perspective starring America Farrera in her breakout role that got her attention that lead to a more commercial series, Ugly Betty, an adapted telenovela that's spans across Latin-America. Just something to think about.
rob & i are always on the same wavelength i swear ! like the son going for the same job as his laid off dad cause of the lack of opportunities during the recession & the dad having to swallow his pride and support his son in that moment 😭😭😭😭
JUMPING WITH JOY RNNNN
hope you guys react to Brooklyn! saoirse ronan is fantastic in that movie
I graduated in 2002, and I am so glad this was not my experience with my mother in the least. I would be appalled if any of my friends had spoken to their parents like that, either. It’s a good film, but I don’t find the relationships genuine to my experience as a teenager in 2002.
I can't say if this accurately depicts most mother-daughter relationships because my mom and I were always close, minus the rare teenage fight here and there, but this story is still soo compelling to me. It's a fairly simple story, but manages to keep my attention throughout. Timothy played a monotonous a**hole well. Saoirse and Laurie were great, as per usual.
4:34 Rob, we said "Manchester by the Sea" at the same time. Fantastic film. I'd love for you all to react to it when you get the chance.
I'm glad you guys watched this! It's great😊
this one's hard for 18 year olds like me
this movie exactly portrayed my relationship with my mom
Me screaming JESSIE at my screen! “Girl woody” smh /j
Bruh I’m cracking up at their makeout scene and her repeatedly saying she hasn’t had sex yet while Timothee surrenders like they need to be in more comedies cause this is fucking hilarious
You guys should react to “Because I said so” or “The Holiday”. My favorite rom coms!
They have done The Holiday!
@@paulinalewis75 whaaaaat? I need to find this now. Thanks!
clicked so fast! ❤️ i love this one. especially as a rewatch.
the title of the video is making me do a double take bc the way i SOBBED when I watched ladybird 😭
I saw this a while ago and didn’t remember much about it so it was nice to see it again!
We appreciate your dedication and hard work. Keep working hard.
The way I loveeee this movie, and I can say that as a male, this movie feels so close to home, it's so accurate about their relationship, Maybe i got to experience it just because I'm gay, but yeah, guys can (sadly) have a bad relationship with their mothers too (obvious). Love your videos ❤️
idk if you’ve ever watched cmbyn but you should since you’ve done so many tim films and that was the same year he was in lady bird too!
I always love seeing Lois Smith. Anyone who’s shared the screen with James Dean is okay by me.
east of eden is one of my all time favoritws
This movie represents all the girlies who have weird dysfunctional relationships with their moms. (Me and my mom)
This movie is so fun.
Laurie Metcalf should have won the Oscar.
me waiting for the reaction of the second season of the interview with the vampire: 👵👩🦯
Almost forgot Timmy was in this too lol
Oof recently had a nosebleed myself but I tilted my head back a bit as well, tho most of the time I kept it down and let it bleed until I figured out what it was cause nothing else gushes out your nose that quickly but good to know rob, good to know
no way! i just watched this movie today!! like 2 hours ago really hahahahah
idk if u guys ever did, but i'd love to see u reacting to some brazilian movies, like >central do brasil (1998)< or >que horas ela volta (2015)< .........hugs :b
40 seconds into this reaction I was trying to remember who I watched this with in the cinema and I was like oh it was that one girl. I then realised that that one girl lost her mum as a baby and has no memories of her and we fully watched this movie in the cinema about a mother daughter relationship and I never reflected on how that must have been for her and now I feel so bad
Ladybird really hits if you were a ladybird in your small town, and ended up moving away. The one's that stayed don't get it imo.
i was surprised that they thought the mom was abusive lol
many daughter-mother relationships are like that
Doesn't make it less abusive. Although, my perspective may be different because my mother and I have always had a solid relationship. Passive aggressiveness is so toxic in any relationship.
This is basically like a modern version of anywhere but here with Natalie Portman and Susan Sarandon
Also what’s great with coming of age is the exploration of generational trauma and how it can affect how parents raise their kids, while trying not to become their own parents and instead striving to be better. In her mom’s case tho she’s taking baby steps, esp now that her daughter’s far away
hey uc davis is a great school!
I would like to say London (Jordan from gen v) is infact in this movie
I *love* this one! 👩🍼 Many thanks to Bryce, Rob and Zuff! 🔸 Huge kudos to writer/director Greta Gerwig.
Yeah, that actually sounds WAS London Thor (Jordan from Gen V)
This movie is great but I think saorise Romans is the standout the way she embodies every role she’s super talented and timothee is great in a more funnier deadpan role
the girl that plays Lady Birds friend is Beanie Feldstein - Jonah Hill's sister!
Her mom js not abusive guysss, she’s intrusive and the way she shows love and care isn’t the best but she wants the best for her kid. Honestly it reminds me a lot of my relationship with my mom when I was a teenager. I showed her this movie and we laughed and cried together ❤
Her mother is emotionally neglectful and that can be a form of abuse. It’s not like a clear version of abuse. But it’s still qualified as abuse
Nah, fam, she is abusive
If you don’t feel like your personal relationship was abusive, then that’s wonderful.. But I don’t agree
yeah people love throwing that around. lady bird and her mother loved one another so much, that's the entire point of the film.
@@promisemochi abusive people can still love the people they abuse. That doesn't change the fact that it absolutely is abuse.
one of my favorite movies ♥️
Her friend is Beanie Feldstein, sister of Jonah Hill.
