man, Greta is just fantastic at portraying girlhood with all of its nuances. like, yes, Lady Bird is selfish, and childish at times, but, in my opinion, it makes the movie so much better. she feels like a real person, and you can still feel for her when she gets hurt by her mom or kyle. this is one of my favorite movies, i'm so glad you loved it!
This was the first film where Timothee Chalamet actually first made me despise him. It showed me how versatile his acting is and how good he is at it. 😭🤚
omgg the scene of them going from arguing in the clothing store to complimenting a dress they found?? i've never felt so seen. that was absolutely me and my mom when i was younger. great reaction as usual💕
Being from Sacramento, and having similar - though less cinematic relationships with my parents - watching this in the back row of Tower Theater was like a weird immersive therapy session that really hit me when it came out. Beautiful movie.
One of the best films ever. As you may know, Lady Bird's dad is played by Tracy Letts, one of the truly great playwrights alive today. He also plays Mr. Dashwood, the publisher, in Little Women 2019. (Also directed by Greta)
@@fictionaldarling jess you have to. Greta plays a full on feminist and unphased character and probably she's my favourite in the movie. Also, the movie in general is great and thought provoking. One of the best epilogues ever.
@@fictionaldarlinglso can’t forget the upcoming Barbie movie, directed and written by her. And Français Ha, also an amazing movie, it’s her director debut if I am not wrong.
i’ve watched this movie ONCE many years ago and had the same feeling of being so relatable and felt so seen that i could never make myself watch it again. the “but do you like me?” scene still haunts me and the way you yelled “OH NO” as soon as she said it is exactly how i react to it 😭
Can confirm I only recently watched it but I felt so seen as well. The but do you like me literally broke my heart and made me have to compose myself for the rest... The silent treatment was heart wrenching to watch as well. I was a mess by the end.
If you want to see where a Christine type character ends up a decade later, I highly recommend Greta Gwrwig's partner's (i e. Noah Baumbach) film "Frances Ha" (2012).
I go into Fight mode every time Lady Bird and her mom are together, it's like I'm seeing reenactments of myself and my mom when I was a teen. What a fantastic movie. I'm extremely excited to see what Greta has done for Barbie 😁💖
It's sad that through that, Lady Bird and her Mum don't realise just how much they have in common. Which makes the ending so much more emotional for me
This is one of those movies that I relate to exponentially, but it's especially interesting here because I more so see my mom and sister in these characters. Like, the acting and writing genuinely made me feel like I was in a room with them. Also, "Titular Role" is forever added to my vocabulary because of this movie.
Greta Gerwig is a GREAT director/screenwriter. She cleverly captures the relatable moments of life, and her movies are so warm, heartfelt, and showing how deeply she cares people. Can't wait to see her next work.
After I saw this in theaters I called my ex-girlfriend and apologized for anything I ever did that made her feel sad and wished her a happy life. We were still friends so hopefully it wasn't too creepy. Anyway, It's a pretty good movie.
I watched this movie with my mom because I was told it’s a good mother daughter movie we were both crying by the end of it. We thankfully have a really good relationship so I didn’t relate to the toxic mother daughter relationship but it still hits really hard
Growing up in Sacramento, going to a Catholic high school, at the same period this film takes place… it really hits different. (And Greta Gerwig going to the all-girls Catholic school at the same time I was at the all-boys school, and having several mutual friends…)
This movie is based off of my high school that Greta also went to and it is scary how much I related to this movie. It was filmed in Sacramento and my mom and I saw it at the Tower theater (featured in the movie). Got into a huge fight about the dressing room scene because my mom said that what the mother said was awful and I replied “you have literally said that to me”
For what it is worth, I think you are a wonderfully fantastic person and I appreciate the genuine emotion you displayed about this brilliant movie and I am so happy you shared your reaction with us. It made my day a just a bit better - so thank you.
I may have been a highschool dude who doesn’t relate to much of this movie personally, but I do still like this movie. Love the performances and script of it all
Greta Gerwig is really a great director. Lady Bird and Little Women are my comfort movies, and I feel like I can watch it everyday and I will still get emotional and will still laugh. Can't wait to see Barbie.
Sometimes i come back and watch this reaction to remind myself im not alone for full stop sobbing during this. Ive had other people watch it and theyre like..."oh ok. Good movie". And i just cant 😂😢😢😢😢
Literally a perfect movie. Happened to see it at like an 11 am press screening where it was the first alert thing I did during the day and that was probably the best way to see it. Couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks.
Scalding hot take, but I like this movie better than Little Women. Perhaps it's because Louisa May Alcott's work stands on its own (even acknowledging Gerwig's reinterpretation), but this was an entirely original work that covered many of the same themes in a modern setting. And now 150 years after Little Women takes place, we have the benefit of modern psychology to tell us exactly how messed-up these characters are. (Also, am I just a hopeless stan for the Gillian Armstrong version of Little Women? Maybe.)
This movie is so fragile and beautiful in how ordinary it feels. Saoirse described it perfectly, when she said the film is like a picture book that you flip through. While there are ups and downs and a clear story being told, there's not one storyark with an enemy or a hero's journey. It's just one moment after the next after the next after the next, like real life. :) Cute movie - but I think it may even suffer from its realism a bit, because it's kind of forgettable.
I very much enjoyed this reaction! It feels weird to say, but your reactions to the mothers behavior was so validating to hear... The movie was amazing just for how real everything was!
This movie is awesome. Growing up in Northern California (San Francisco/east bay/Berkeley area back and forth) we Bay Area folk always look at Sacramento like eww this place is a little off. Then I’ve heard Greta Gerwig in interviews mention Sacramento is like the Midwest of California… I friggin died. But I think I personally relate to Greta Gerwig’s movie making style being that we’re both Northern California millennials. If you liked this movie try Palo Alto if you haven’t already.
I love this film so much. It also brings up a lot for me, probably why i love it so much. It touches parts of me that are just...ugh! Adolescence was interesting guys, not bad mind you just just interesting.
Late as heck comment, but my english teacher HATED Lady Bird. Like the character. I loved her and related to her and her issues with her mum and how she communicates awkwardly. After i told my teacher that, she stopped expressing how much she hated her lmao

this is a canon event in every woman life
Well, I'm definitely not a woman but it was also something I strongly related to.

the script is honestly incredible, and i totally agree!! she’s such a well-written, _real_ character. it’s such a good film!!!
@@fictionaldarling yes, a hundred percent!!
Yes, she is the exact reason why I, a 25 year old grown man, wants to watch the Barbie movie so badly.
@@charlesgong4510did you watch it yet?

It is a female coming-of-age story that is both nostalgic and unflinching, and it will ensnare you deeply in its grasp.

I'm not from Sac but I am from the Sac area, the Granite Bay slander was my favorite bit. Plus I got too excited when I saw the El Dorado Savings.
Super intrigued to see how Greta tackles BARBIE releasing soon.
same, i can't wait for it to come out!!
12:42 it’s funny because he HAD a movie of himself (being gay and religious), the movie is called Boy Erased
Nominated for 5 Oscars including Best Picture but lost to The Shape Of Water. I was actually rooting fo Lady Bird to win.
