To add your icloud email address to any desktop mail client on Linux, enter these parameters:
The server for receiving email is imap.mail.me.com. It uses SSL, and the port is 993.
The user is your icloud address, and for the password, you'll need to generate an app specific password.

As per sending email, the server is smtp.mail.me.com, SSL is needed, and the port is 587. The address and password are the same that you entered for email reception.
For contacts and calendars, the parameters to enter are the following:
As the calendar address, enter caldav.icloud.com/ . Your user name is your icloud address, and your password is the app password you generated earlier.
Same goes for contacts, except the address to enter is contacts.icloud.com/.
You can access Notes and Reminders through the web portal. They only have the basic features. iWork apps, like Numbers, pages and Keynote are also all accessible.
Now for photos, the web interface is serviceable, you get your albums, a list of pictures, you can upload photos manually and have them show up on all your other devices, but you won't be able to edit them from here.
There is no auto upload app that will let you send pictures from your desktop to your icloud photo library either, you'll have to do manual uploads.
There's a command line utility called icloud photos downloader:

As per files stored in iCloud drive, this one will also only be accessible through the web interface, you can't mount it as external storage or auto sync files to a Linux desktop, which kinda sucks.
If you use Apple Music, there's a fantastic Linux desktop client, called Cider.
You can install it from flathub,or as a snap, a debian package, and an appimage, as well as from the AUR.
There is simply no way to access your imessages on Linux. No web interface, no app, no third party client. it's a closed source program and protocol, and so unless Apple decides to offer a web interface or to open the protocol, you'll have to keep using your smartphone or tablet to answer these.
Connecting devices
What if you want to plug in a device and grab its contents on Linux, though? Well, that's supported. By default, when plugging in your iphone or ipad, it will show up as a camera device, provided you accept that access on the popup that appears on your device. It will show up with a DCIM folder.
It will be mounted as read-only, so you can't transfer files to it.

KDE Connect lets you sync stuff between a phone or tablet, and a linux desktop. It should be installed by default on KDE desktops, and on GNOME, you can install the GSConnect extension. Don't forget to reboot your computer afterwards, it never worked right after install for me.
On iOS, you can share the contents of the clipboard, send photos or videos, send regular files, use the device as a slideshow remote, run commands, or use it as a virtual touchpad. Honestly, the biggest loss that I'm still mourning since switching to Linux and Android is the loss of iTunes, no, not Apple Music, _iTunes._ I know some think of it as a relic of the past, but I have an aversion to subscription services and I like being able to purchase a song and have it be in my library forever. I could hear a song I liked on the radio while at work, Shazam it, and purchase it within seconds. And that song will be automatically ready for me on my Mac when I got home (and vice versa). It was so convenient. Now it's like... where do I even buy music? Google Music is gone, Amazon only sells mp3s... do I really just have to hope they have a bandcamp page? My music listening and purchasing has really suffered now because it's such a faff to purchase music and sync that between devices. It's such a shame that Apple doesn't want to support iTunes on Linux.

Torrents might help. My collection is local as well (and no subscriptions), but I just take audio from TH-cam since with my cheap headphones and speakers I won't hear the difference anyway.
There are better option for digitally buying songs. Qobuz for example sells albums in cd quality or *higher*.
I still use iTunes (running High Sierra on my iMac) and manage a huge music library with it. It's funny that I've basically used the same music player/library app since the 90s (iTunes was made from SoundJamMP which Apple purchased) and I've yet to find as complete a replacement for it. I can't stand music streaming services, I want to OWN my music. (I'm also a DJ so I kind of have to).
Appreciate the time and effort to show how to use things Apple on Linux, rather than just dismissing all of it with "Apple is stupid, dummy. Don't use Apple." As for iMessage, my understanding is that it is theoretically possible to get iMessage working on Linux. In practice it takes enough nonsense - starting with running a mac (or mac vm) on your LAN to act as a sort of proxy to the iMessage service - that it makes doing so all but impossible as you pointed out.
I have this setup but it was a massive pain to do. The average user is unlikely to stick through all the hoops you have to go through to get it to work tho. It was worth it for me because I love being able to respond to texts and iMessages from my computer
Webmessage works but your device needs to be jailbroken
iMessage is awesome because it works out of the box. If you have to create an entire network and what not to make it work better leave it
I'm using both, apple OSs and linux since about 20 years. In the first years it was easy since there were no apple phones. then it got difficult for a time but now it is easy. there are many options to transfer files and use apple services as you pointed out. for me the easiest solution for filetransfer is Signal and Signal Desktop for linux - just send yourself a file or whatever and you got it on your other device - no syncing though, but I don´t need it. BTW: love your videos!
I replaced the Desktop & Downloads folders on 2 Macs and a Linux Notebook by symlinks into Nextcloud folders. All devices share the same Desktop Downloads and of couse all other Nextcloud files. Works pretty good.

One thing to mention which is not minor regarding the iPhotos: the web interface will not allow to upload big videos, so if you have several videos that are 4 or 5 mins long, you won’t be able to upload using the iCloud web interface, so you won’t be able to store your video memories. This is a limited feature that only works through Mac OS integration (and the reason I use Google Photos and Google Drive for all my docs and personal files, as I have a Linux/ Mac hybrid environment at home)

If you have any Mac laying around (even an old decrepit one) you can use it as an iMessage server via an app called BlueBubbles that can forward iMessages to Linux (or Windows or Android) devices.
Thank you for making this video!! I'm trying to get into using Linux after being exclusively on Macs since the early 1990s. I work in music production and MacOS has basically been a requirement because the industry standard software has been Mac only all this time. It basically still is. Anyway, I'm currently dual booting with Linux (Fedora at the moment) on an external NVMe drive in a thunderbolt enclosure. It's so fast! , but it's really hard to totally make the switch because I really miss the fantastic conveniences of the Mac ecosystem. I thought I was going to have to resort to switching to Google for these services, which I really didn't want to do. Now that you've showed me how... Just... thank you. thank you. Thank you!!
theres no good music software on GNU linux. id reccomend you dont switch for that purpose. im trying to find a way to run my waves and logic pro on my chromebook and came across this on my search but besides it theres nothing.
@@famousmwofficial8046 Thanks for the reply. I'm not switching in my profession. The studio needs to stick with macOS for a whole multitude of reasons. I'm trying to switch on my personal / office laptop. I haven't been able to do it 100% yet because I still need Quickbooks for the business accounting and Quicken for personal finances. For personal finance, there are fine alternatives on Linux, but there isn't anything for small business on Linux that has all the features I need and there probably never will be and I'm trying my hardest to avoid paying a subscription for the software. I've been able to get macOS Monterey to run in a VM, but it's incredibly slow. So far I've tried QuickEMU and VirtualMachineManager. the QEMU KVM works slowly with only 7MB of video ram. I was hoping VMM would run better (you can set available RAM and processor allocation much easier) but I've been unable to get my Monterey VM virtual drive to boot under it. I've given up for the time being.

For iMessage, there is a project called "Beeper" that offers interoperability between different messaging services (based on matrix bridges), and they were working on iMessage integration last I checked.
@@mritunjaymusale I don't think the Beeper app is, but the have Swift Framework for interacting with iMessage on their Github. And afaik you can use it with any Matrix Client like for example Element, because it is essentially just a Matrix homeserver with hosted bridges.
On Fedora 37 I was able to copy 10GB of videos to VLC on my iPad through the Documents mount point in Nautilus without installing anything extra, so not sure what happened there
Very comprehensive. I would only add the Barrier app. Screen sharing might be impossible with iOS but at least it will do the trick with an iMac or MacBook.
I use barrier between my Linux desktop and iMac which are both on my desk - absolutely cannot live without it. Fantastic software.

But anyways, one tool that would help I think is Resilio and Syncthing. They do the same thing really, syncing your storage/folders across devices without cloud requirement, but have different features. I like Resilio better because they have made selective sync a supported feature and have more features, but I can totally understand people preferring Syncthing because it's open source and has Flatpak.
I think they're just good to use to get off Cloud Storage and they've saved me up money I used to pay OneDrive for.

Hi Nick! I'm in the process of getting a Steam Deck but I haven't used a non-MacOS computer in some time. To make the transition easier for me, I'm planning to use Progressive Web Apps on my Steam Desktop. Is using iCloud PWAs like these possible? My current strategy is to download Distrobox on Steam OS and get Linux Mint so I have access to Webapp Manager. Then get desktop shortcuts to Pages and Keynote. Is this possible? Will I have to sign in to iCloud every time? Hoping to hear from you. Thanks.

I have Nextcloud mainly to replace Dropbox and ICloud stuff :) works pretty well, but its not as smooth or properly integrated.
For iCloud drive you can use syncthing to sync files across
Syncthing is amazing software. I have a complex web of synced folders across all my computers and devices. One problem being syncthing cannot work on iOS (due to file system sandboxing which Apple is adamant on). The work around? Use syncthing to sync your icloud drive folder from one of your macs - now you can have it all together. I use it to keep Obsidian sync'd between all my devices and it works perfectly.

Also I second cider I’ve been using it for a while now and is so much better than the iTunes for windows application, now I only need to use iTunes for backups, and it feels faster than iTunes too. HIGHLY recommend.
How is your gnome theme so consistent? Mine is very broken and half the time it's the old GTK look and half the time it's the new libadwaita. I don't have any custom themes installed other than papirus icons. Does the "user themes" extension break the consistency for the default theme?
Forgot to add that the shell theme doesn't need to be changed as it already fits in with the libadwaita apps, just change the app theme in GNOME Tweaks and you should be good to go
Thank you for this video, it’s exactly what I wanted to see, I would like to keep using my iMac 2017 for Linux, as macOS supported is gradually now being phased out for intel Macs. It’s a decent machine and don’t need to buy a new one yet, I just want to keep using it as long as possible, as at the moment I’m not keen on the way Apple implemented storage on their latest machines, seems to be some failures in nearby chips.

System Tray icons are a way to keep apps alive in the background, so that's most likely the reason for the Cider tray icon.

I came to linux from macOS. I used to use iCloud for everything, and I had tried using it with linux, including the chromium web apps... but found it a rather meh experience. It actually spurred me to get into NextCloud so I just did the reverse - made a NextCloud server, and then connected my macOS/iOS devices to use that. Also replaced notes with Obsidian which is far superior in every way. Apple's ecosystem is quite excellent if you're all in on it. It's a smooth, complete experience... if you only use Apple devices. I've honestly never been happier since I moved all my stuff off iCloud (well almost all).
How well does Nextcloud integrate with Photos? Thats the heft of my iCloud.
@@codymurphy3493 Photos the macOS application and service? Nextcloud can't as far as I'm aware. You *can* however browse your photos library from the filesystem, so what I would try is somehow syncing the internal "originals" folder inside the library with a directory nextcloud can read.

I love warpinator, it's a Linux version of AirDrop created by the Linux Mint team but of course that means Desktops and Laptops only, not sure if it is available on Smartphones yet.

Snapdrop is another good one. Although you should host that one yourself, works on any device from a browser. Docker setup took me literally 5 minutes. So far it's the best AirDrop replacement out there!
I have moved mail, contacts, calendar first to a pro-privacy non-us service. Easy to use any device now.
You do not have to give up your Apple computers that are no longer supported by Mac OS. Just run Linux on it. I have the following installed on my 2009 Mac Pro, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, PCLinuxOS, and Manjaro. All works just fine.
The best and only Apple Service I still use is Apple Music with Cider on Linux, like Apple Music on all other platforms it just has the most pleasant UX and UI.

It's not the Apple ecosystem that I avoid, it's all ecosystems that I avoid. This keeps me from using cloud storage, synching anything and so on.

I agree that someone should code that feature and it would be super easy, and I hope someone takes you up on that offer, but it won't be me. I'd rather code such a feature for KDE, if I were to do it, but I have a slight hatred for Apple these days.

I'd love a review of Raspberry PiOS on the Desktop experience. I have a MacBook Air, which is the last Intel model. When I upgrade I'd love to use RaspberryPiOS on this device for continuity between a laptop and the Pis.
The one thing I have been unable to successfully do on my fedora laptop is stream audio from my laptop to an airplay device. I have a yamaha receiver that only does airplay and two homepod minis.
I have had some success with Airplay running iTunes in Windows in a VM (though it took a little jiggling of sequences of starting things up and a few reboots to get it going). You may think this is unnecessarily complicated, and I would agree, but at least it can be done, unlike syncing Music on my iPhone. Chromecast Audio might be easier, but of course Google discontinued the hardware.

We’re still missing a GTK4 Flatpak program that supports iPhone plugged in the Linux PC, and automatically backs up photos and videos on the hard drive. MEGA has a sync features, which is utterly annoying because you have to delete files every now and then to stay under the storage limit, but then because of sync it will reupload them. Neverending circle.
I agree Keynotes is just amazing, even now when I rarely use my MacBook I, still create every presentation using keynotes. I never even bother with PowerPoint or Libre Office Impress.
Pages is fine and notes is an abomination which should exist.
One of the only thing keeping me on my mac mini is that Apple doesn't like external NAS' devices for anything but backups. I want to have all my long term storage on a NAS drive but Apple doesn't like Photos or Music on a shared device. I RDP in to my mini only for certain tasks like searching for photos. Yes, I know I can move it to my Synology device but I can't use native apple tools.
As long as you work with symlinks most things will work even on external devices. As long as they do not necessarily need special Apple File System features. You can always make a test. I just commented before here that i use Desktop and Downloads on my Nextcloud Server.
@ Apple doesn't like to share. There are some things in Apple land that literally have to be locally mounted and only used by a single user - like the photos or music catalog. Make it multi-user and it can easily get corrupted.

Why would you want this? When I used an iphone, I made every attempt to avoid these poorly-made apps.
I used Cider for a couple of months. Then one day I had to travel for like 15 days or so, and when I came back, Cider just stopped signing in the Apple account I got. So, I mean I would love if Cider works well, but it doesn't when it doesn't, and Ubuntu software centre removed it as well.

Using macOS on Work computer and Fedora on personal computer.
Invested heavily on using keyboard shortcuts on mac and every time I try to do something on my personal computer, the keyboard shortcuts are very unpleasant to use.
Hope there will be an official implementation of macOS shortcuts on future.
I wish I could use Logic or Final Cut on Linux without running a macOS vm.

The lack of a "legit" iMessage equal on both Linux and Windows is unfortunate and Apple should challenged in court because of that limitation. Yes, I know if you have a jailbroken device you can use Webmessage but we shouldn't need to go to that extent to be able to type text messages from a keyboard

Well, I think he’s wrong about iMessage people are buying iPhones for just iMessage and FaceTime so you can’t just say that you can find alternative of iMessage just because you want to switch to Linux that’s not make sense :) by the way, if you live in Europe, or any other country, people are using secondary messaging app because they don’t know how to use ecosystem itself mostly
Apple’s ecosystem is the best around and I say that as both a Linux and Apple user.
AirMessage is a great solution for using iMessage cross-platform. It requires a Mac, but you can get a Mac Mini on eBay for under $100. Mine lives under my couch and sends iMessages from Linux all day.
Or just buy a god damn iPhone than having a mac and broken iMessage 😂

Mexican here. the "poshy"side of my familiy uses everything apple... except iMessage.
Well, the iMessage thing isnt entirely true. Here's a solution.
1. Set up the Sosumi OS X VM snap
2. Set the Sosumi snap to auto start and auto log in
3. Log into Messages on Sosumi. Boom. Messages on Mac OS on Linux. You can also go further to put it on an Android phone tho
4. Install AirMessage server on the Sosumi VM
5. Install the AirMessage app on your Android phone and connect to your Sosumi server
I did this for a while, but ended up not using it.
It's not ideal by a long shot, but you technically can use it.
If you have a home server, you can set it up to run on that isntead of your main machine as well
Great solution lemme set up an entire NASA for it to work. Also FaceTime? iMessage extensions? Editing messages? It will be a solution to send simple message nothing else work so forget it

also "technically" you're wrong about the iMessages thing. air message does need a Mac server running but it lets you access iMessage on android or through the web
As a mac user honestly if it takes so much to get it working just use something else like Signal. iMessage is amazing out of the box, if you have to make it as much difficult as compiling gento Linux just use Signal instead and be done with it

@@-aexc- I have never done it but setting it up sounds awful because also. In IMessage I use other extensions with other people I talk like GamePigeon, I doubt it would work with air message, also what about each update in IMessage? It would technically break it. What about photos? Can you send photos, iMessage is made to utilise High Efficiency Image Container which almost no android supports so how do you get that to work?
What I am trying to say is that there are so many problems and breaking things that ain’t worth it.
I use IMessage with my iPhone friends, Signal for my android friends and Instagram for the boomer girls.
No one is going to do that though

Seriously how is Messenger far better options? I can’t find 1 advantage it has:
Huge compression, no HEIC(I think),Ads, Extreme surveillance, no end to end encryption and no that fake E2E encryption Facebook offers is backdoor or whatever and just marketing.
