One extension that is a must have for me in regards to consistency is the rounded window corners (not to be confused with rounded corners) as it will "fix" the bottom corners of GTK3 applications to be round too :)

This video reminds me of why I stuck with GNOME for so long. I like my current KDE setup quite a bit. It is just hard to beat the UX/UI consistency of GTK4. The GNOME Circle apps are also great.

    • @kuwandak
      @kuwandak ปีที่แล้ว +2

KDE apps: A full blown paiting app that is arguably better than paid options; an app that can output a graph if you input an equation; an RStudio like app; feature rich text editors and an IDE with support for tree view and LSP; an entire office suite; a video editor; a music conerter; a tagging aplication; KDE Connect, etc.
GNOME Circle apps: an app that allows you to visit wikipedia without opening a browser; a lorem ipsum generator... for when you want to not open the browser; a radio app, so that you don't need to open the browser; a magic ball app, so that you don't need to open the browser to do t-that, uh, yeah.
      GNOME apps are great indeed.

That way, you can manipulate windows and switch windows/workspaces without using the keyboard or moving the mouse up to the activities button.

Ive been loving using arch+sway at work for the past 3 years. As soon as you have everything set up, just the way you want it because it's arch, it runs as stable as any other distro, and perhaps even more so due to the lack of automatic updates. If you do want to update for the sake of security, stability or installing new software, the process will be less or more involved depending on how long you waited, but it's a tradeoff that *you* are making, actively. You can set aside a couple minutes to run the upgrade, and if it all goes well you'll be done in no time. If it doesn't, well, I've only managed to brick my kernel twice, and that was one time because I used a zfs package compiled for a specific kernel version (Fix: DKMS), and one time because a kernel update GPLed some symbols which zfs wasnt updated for yet, but that one did not stop me from working because I installed an LTS kernel alongside the regular one.

Lots in common with my style of interface usage as well -- virtual desktops all the way. 🙂Totally on board with ALL your choices of tools as well -- DaVinci Resolve and BitWig Studio support for Linux are big reasons for my migration decision. Hard choice moving forward is high end System76 or new Framework 16". Based on your experiences, Nvidia GPU may be the deciding factor. Your thoughts on both that choice and on the better Linux distros for keeping those older Macs out of the landfill would be welcome!

Text scaling is a good workaround for not having DPI scaling, but it is set for the computer rather than for each monitor. I run a custom script in the Run Command dialog (Alt+F2) to switch off my laptop's text scaling when I dock it to my monitor (and back on when it's undocked). There's an extension which does the same thing from an icon in the Top Bar, but typing is so much quicker!

Yea, it’s a custom user chrome css, but I can’t remember the name, it’s the one that’s supposed to make Firefox look like a libadwaita app

I had issues with Wayland and Nvidia hybrid graphics as soon as I try to use an external display :/ Specially if both native and external displays have different dpi needs. Also, for some reason the external display was super slow and choppy. Had to disable integrated graphics in the end. Nvidia drivers 525 also don't allow me to use keyboard shortcuts to set brightness. 515 are ok though... Overall I still don't enjoy Nvidia in linux

Using NobaraOS gnome for 3 months now. Didn't really want to switch from Manjaro KDE but I bought a new beast laptop and guess I'd try using the "new gaming distro".
And yeah, I don't see myself switching any time soon. 🙂

Great video! As someone who uses Linux at work, I found your insights into using GNOME extensions, apps and workflow to be really helpful. It's great to see other Linux enthusiasts sharing their experiences and tips with the community.
One of the things I appreciated about this video was how you went into detail about the various GNOME extensions available and how they can be used to improve productivity. I also liked how you discussed the different apps that you use in your workflow, as this can be a helpful reference point for others who are looking to streamline their own work processes.
I especially appreciated your emphasis on the importance of customizing your Linux environment to suit your needs. It's one of the things that makes Linux such a powerful tool, and it's great to see you highlighting this in your video.
Overall, I found this video to be really informative and well-presented. It's clear that you have a lot of experience using Linux in a professional setting, and I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge with others. I'll definitely be checking out more of your videos in the future!

Hey Nick! You might already know this, or you might have another use for the shortcut, that button that falls under your thumb on ypur Logitech mouse? Mine is set to activate the Overview. Each workflow is different, but I'm a dev and this little button helps me a lot for switching tasks!

    Dear Nick.
While you showed your ultrawide Monitor, please allow me to make an excursion to Windows 11, even if you're not using it (at least regularly). And please don't start bashing everybody.
When I saw the first screenshots of windows 11 I was thinking "What the he'll did they think to center the menu button!?". It was against all commons and "used to" that time.
When I managed to workaround-install Windows 11 on my unsupported PC I realized the idea 💡 behind this: It makes sense to center the Menu Button on Ultrawide Monitors. Imagine now your mouse cursor is on the right edge of the monitor and you have to move to the left edge to click on the start button (you will use the meta key of course but less experienced user would likely not).
Of course some Linux Desktops like KDE (and maybe gnome -I don't know exactly) offer customization in that way that the menu button can be placed on the center.
On KDE the panel has to be edited by a right click and selection of the corresponding menu item for edit the panel, then a spacer has to be placed on the left side of the panel
(I'm aware that you know it already, I'm writing this in a way where every reader can follow up).
Due to my job I have to use Windows (mostly), Linux or Mac OS, depending on customer 's requirements.
That's all from my side. Thanks for all the awesome videos you create.

I hate your videos so much. Because you allways make me think about switching to Linux and abandoning Windows. You basicaly got me to a state where I told myself "As soon as there is a decent way to use Microsoft office on Linux (cuz i need to use them), Im ditching Windows in a second!" .... also Microsoft being more and more sassy about collecting your data and advertising you literally any random bullshit on W11 (on a OS that you have to pay for !!!), its making Linux more and more tempting expecialy since it looks so good.....
PS: You and your videos literally made me buy second SSD so I can doubleboot when I feel like it. Keep doing great job and in time I will join the penguin club fully !!

Maybe I am boring, but I have been using Linux Mint for work as my primary OS since... 2011... using the Cinnamon desktop of course. Yeah back then it was pretty revolutionary, but it hasn't changed all that much really, with most changes being iterative, which I like.
When I am working, I don't like dorking around with stuff. I just want to turn the computer on, and be able to use my applications, and do my job. Mint is great at this. If you're using mainstream applications and not doing anything to odd, it's perfect. I have no intentions of changing LOL... so maybe I am boring, that's OK.
