- There is only one Maceo Parker! What a super funky rendition of Ray Charles his "Hallelujah I Love Her So". I loved his melodic interpretation, so that's in the transcription as well as his funky improvised sax solo. This was in collaboration with the WDR Big Band from Cologne, performing live in Leverkusen.

The one and only. So funky that altissimos is not needed.
Except for one G altissimo :-)
He has a delicious combination of a sweet alto sound & face ripping funkiness. Great articulation too.
Ha, you just said what I was trying to formulate :-) Two qualities that don't seem to be related but Maceo makes that sound very natural - brilliant!
Great comment by Steve Dew!
So true!
I Love Sax!
I got to play with Maceo once. It was super humbling. I played twice as many notes as he did, but he made four times as much music as I did
The man made a solo out of a chromatic scale 😄😄 It's a great experience to play with the greats -- it makes you better
I wouldn't dare to play alongside such a musician - you are really a brave man :) I admire you
Unquestionably Maceo!! That unmistakable tone and phrasing. Love it!!
So true, I started listening without reading the title and my brain said... "hey! It's MACEO!!!!"
Another great transcription #11! If being funky was a crime, Maceo would be doing a life sentence!
Haha, totally!
No wonder James Brown called him the best drummer he ever played with
Yes yes yes
What drummer?....mame it
He called Maceo Parker, the saxophonist, the best drummer he ever played with.@@carloschumbes7041
Yes Maceo is the best
I know nothing about proper music terminology but I know a good saxophone when I hear it. Fucking fantastic :]
That is some fine Maceo. It's more melody than I heard in many many hours of his playing with Godfather. With the JBs he's almost more like another funky drummer.
Crazy! Didn't even go past a G, but kept it G!
Awesome solo! I was listening to this video the other day. Iirc there's also a terrific organ solo by Frank Chestanier
Oh yes! That's the solo where he's humping his organ
@@SharpElevenMusic wait, what? 🤣🤣
@@JK-js2td check the original and you'll know what I mean 😉
That little rhtmic stacato repetition at bar 29-30. Brilliant!
I had the pleasure of seeing Maceo live around 6 years ago, when I was 10 and just started playing sax. His performance completely changed my view on what could be done on a sax and just how flipping cool it really was. I owe my entire jazz experience to maceo getting me so into it in the first place. I hope some day I can thank him in person 🙏
I saw Maceo and he signed my d-i-a-l Maceo cd...waited for him at his touring bus. Not only is he a badass saxman...hes also very professional, humble, and friendly. Just the right qualities in a sax hero! 😎👏
I never got a chance to see Maceo Parker, but the second coolest thing in my life was getting to jam with Fred Wesley while I was studying music-ed in college. The coolest being jamming with Darius Rucker.
Bella historia, gracias
Frank Chastenier can‘t even sit calm during the solo! So funky
I was so luck to get to see him in 1991 for his self titled Maceo LP/Tour. That band RIPPED SHIT UP!!!! So so so so so good!!!
This is do dope, and besides his amazing solo, I just love how he interprets that melody! That rhythmic acceleration trick he does in bar 25 and 29 always really sucked me in. Maybe I'll do a breakdown video on that if I can find the time, as it's genius how he uses the saxophone as such a rhythmical instrument. 🔥
What do you love about Maceo Parker? Drop it in the comments down ⤵ Would love to hear that!
By the way, for those interested, I've recently published a course on what I consider to be the Saxophone Fundamentals, what I see that all the saxophone great I've transcribed (over 160 transcription so far) all have in common. Great licks and lines is one thing, but if your sound is crappy, that won't bail you out. It's a 2 hour + course that gives you exercises, which also overlap in different areas so they are compound excercises and you tackle a few essentials at the same time. Check it out here: www.sharpelevenmusic.com/saxophone-fundamentals-how-to-sound-like-a-pro
Or if you want to go for more straight forward stuff, we have a "Saxophone Licks Unraveled" ebook with a selection of 21 of the best sax licks we've ran accros from varying artist, all conceptually explained so you could take the rough idea and mould that into your own: www.sharpelevenmusic.com/saxophone-licks-unraveled
Maceo can do no wrong. Saw him live at the Blue Note in January of 19. AMAZING! He also has a fantastic voice that no one ever mentions.
I liked it when he sang, "Shake everything you've got!"
Maceo's funk is so lethal it has been banned by the Geneva convention.
It’s all about the sound, (his tone and phrasing).
Maceo absolutely the sax king of funk! A fabulous musician and improviser!
This is really incredible. Maceo forever!
If I could set this as my alarm, I’d be satisfied for the rest of my natural life
get the CD and transfer the audio to your phone, link it to the alarm ;)
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼This the way! Congratulations and thanks!
As Maceo put it, he’s 2% Jazz and 98% Funky Stuff 😊🎷
A few “once in a generation” musicians have had folks trying to copy or be heavily influenced by them. But no one tries to copy Maceo - most likely because it’s a code that can’t be broken. Maceo Parker is a musical “one off”!
The King of Funk
This is so dope man. My middle name is Maceo after Maceo parker!
I named my black and white border collie puppy Maceo in 2007. Best dog i ever had...and strangers not in the know always wanted to know where his name came from 🤣
The Phonk Police is already waiting backstage😂
Hey!! estoy vivo, gracias Maceo
Saw him a few years ago WOW
Amazing
Love it! John.
I reckon that piano part was written in musescore, looking at the font
Thats wild
Dude thinks in syncopation
Allowed?
I think it should be required!!
💯
Dope!
Undoubtedly funks 🤙
Off the top, sounds like a bit of 'Mercy, Mercy', Joe Zawinul, i think. The Buckinghams had a vocal version on radio when I was a kid, and after hearing it as an instrumental at many blues jams, I began fudging my way thru a couple of verses.
Show
very cool video guys - great work - S
everythang !!!!!!
this is guy is 80 yrs old!
It's the notes he doesn't play that makes it funky, think they're called 'ghost notes'?
Pure greasy funk
I didnt know markiplier played guitar so well..
My first thought seeing that guy too lol
It put me in mind of a cross between markiplier and lord farquad
Apart from obviously jazz, what specific genre is this?
Maceo Parker is the king of Funk, but this particular tune is a kind of RocknRoll, Soul, jive like groove, which was popular early 60s with the likes of Ray Charles.
That man IS IN the pocket…
No need for shreds, still G ;)
It started off like vanilla but finished like a chocolate sundae.
Sorry...Maceo may be alot of things...but he is NOT vanilla...ever!
@@JK-js2td you need to try Tahitian vanilla beans. You’ll change your mind on vanilla.
Look like the Metropole orchestra to me.
Nope, WDR Big Band from Cologne in Germany, one badass big band 😁
@@SharpElevenMusic Ok. Some of the musicians I recognize are now in the Metropole orchestra.
One scale 😂😂😂😂
needs some perfummme... for the REAL FUNK,,, FUNKKEEE FUNK ...
I have a Conn 10 M. I am a sucker for just about aNYTHING involving a B-3. I guess I better stop trying to play the sax.
Go to another teacher before quit
Awesome. So many of his abilities aren't have as musical.
I disagree. You should NEED to be this funky in order to step foot onto a stage and call yourself a saxophone player.
There would be alot less sax players taking the stage 🤣
Dope!
