I love Maceo Parker. Life on planet groove is definitely my favorite CD. I saw him years ago in concert for $10. He came on stage at 11:30 pm and he played until 2:00am with no break. Just two and a half hours of pure funk. It was the best $10 I ever spent.
Maceo would come to a repair shop I worked at in Raleigh to get his sax worked on. It was a fantastic opportunity to watch and listen to him work the sax testing it out.
That's one his greatest tunes. Beautiful funk song. Got that JB feel! My Dad had that 45 and that's the first thing I ever heard from him. My favorite Maceo song. Soul Power 74 yessir!!!
OMG... Maceo is one of my favorites and I have "shake everything u got" on my cellphone, it is the best one. No wonder I subscribed to your channel as soon as I heard you playing
Scott you absolutely killed this tutorial, Fantastic instructions on how to play in Maceos funk style!!!!!! Are there any more technique tutorials with similar tips ? Adding these techniques to your practice schedule Really make you want to practice more!! Really Really impressed with your playing ability thanks SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE Man!! I like Splash in, off of Maceos Southern Comfort Album. I actually mentioned this to you a few yrs. back when you released a funk style tutorial!
Lol at the helicopter flying over your house statement. You know how BPD is; always messing up a good lesson with helicopter noise. Man, youre preaching the gospel sir. I gotta try this out when I play. For the longest time I've wondered why I suck as a player. So I approached the language and analyzing how lines work. Yes that has improved my play tremendously but I always felt something else was missing and BAM, you hit me with this. I guess this rabbit hole is bottomless huh? Keep pouring the knowledge sir. I admire the fact that you're willing to spread the knowledge to novice players such as myself. Keep up the great work.
Life on Planet Groove is funky and don’t discount Candys playing. Candy Dulfers got Maceo down!!!! She’s very underrated. Scott, great video. Your sound is so f……… good!!!!!
Hi Scott, fantastic all of you, as always! Could you comment on what setup you use, apart from that amazing Paul Mauriat RX67 Influence alto sax. I mean what mouthpiece, ligature and reed. Thanks a lot!! Silverio, from the northeast portal of Argentine Patagonia.
No, I'm using the overtone fingerings. So fingering the low note, and using my tongue and voice to produce the higher overtone. Check out my tutorials on overtones for more info.
If I was gonna address my sticking problems its finding and playing hi f, f#, and fake falsetto GABCD....POSSIBLE 3RD TIER E F & F#. And all the low notes I never learned in 4th grade - High school. I can only confidently play down to D phlat or E phlat if it must be called. H.E L.P.
Hey Richard - here's a video I did on low notes a while ago. The video quality isn't that great, but after you watch it, you'll be about to pop out those low notes!
Glad to see a TH-cam educator digging into Maceo. He's inspired so many but seems to not get discussed much.
Yeah, he’s one of my favorites!

Splashin' from southern exposure is also just awesome !

That would be awesome, to be able to hear him just sit and jam in a casual setting like that.
I came here when the video had 251 views. My life is complete.
Thanks for getting here early! 🔥
I never really thought about his technique other than its uniqueness. Nice job 👍🏽
Wonderful. A refreshing and intelligent trip through Maceo Parker World!
Thanks!!
Addicted love, Maceo and Candy, bringing the unrelenting feelzzz
Life on Planet Groove is underrated FIRE!! Shake everything you got is the tightest, but Candy Dulfer legit shreds on Addicted Love too.
Oh man, I love playing along to her on this track. Her sound and vibe is off the charts on it.
My favorite Maceo track is “Soul Power 74”; which is the sample in J Lo’s “Alright”
Thank you for this!!!
YEAH! That is a killer track.

Yes!!! You killed it...
😁😁😁

Hey Craig! You're super close... but I'm currently in Thailand and will be in South East Asia for the next couple of months.
Hi Scott, what determines the notes played?
What I mean is, why was it A you played after B?
Was it random?

Funny, but my girlfriend prefers my " licks", over my " technique".
Hi Scott, thanks for a great video. Do you use the middle or side of your tongue to mute the note? Cheers, Robbie
I use the middle.
check out "Oh Maceo" by Average white band. Its the exact embodyment of what Scott is saying!
AWB!!!! 🤟🤟
The third is the last lick on elephant foot
🐘🤟
so is your overtone B and C @8:30 , just an overblown low B/C fingering?
No, I'm using the overtone fingerings. So fingering the low note, and using my tongue and voice to produce the higher overtone. Check out my tutorials on overtones for more info.
