    • @nairdazitro7460

Unique timbre. He was born with it, that what makes him so rare. It's so funny when all sax teachers say " PrActiCe OveTonEs AND yoU'll AcHiEve YoUr DrEam TOne " 😂 They simply don't understand the difference between tone and sound. Michael Brecker can play the easiest riff ( Opening sax riff on " Your latest trick " ) and still sounds fantastic.

Agree, he was a beast. I was amazed when I learnt Michael Brecker helped Eric Marienthal with his "Comprehensive Jazz Studies" book. Not sure what exactly Michael helped with, but Eric thanked him for the review and some good tips with scales, patterns and exercises which Michael was damn good at.

He appeared on the scene an absolute killer. When did all his development take place?
Michael: I think I'll play the saxophone...
Michael a few years later at 19 years old: I think I'll move to New York and show everyone how it's done.
He sounded completely mature and accomplished always.

I just LOVE that camera shot capturing Randy's face from around 0:58. He is pretty much like what we all do behind our computers/phones when hearing this solo. This is one of them better examples that embodies why we all love Michael Brecker. The dexterity of Parker/Cannonball (and some more!), the massive energy of Coltrane, the soul and blues from King Curtis and other R'nB saxophonist all in one. 🔥
We will try to put as many Michael Brecker content out this week, as coming thursday marks the 15 anniversary of him passing away. What are your favorite Michael Brecker moments? Are there transformative performances/recordings that maybe even changed the direction of your life? I know he had a transformative impact one me, more on that later this week. Let me know YOUR story or Brecker experience in the comments below!

      Michael Brecker lives!

    • @haroldoakland3480
      @haroldoakland3480 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Three moments of his: the first was Delta City Blues, I was maybe 17 and not a very good saxophonist, and it changed how I viewed the saxophone and helped launch me forward; second was right after I got out of basic training and was at the military music school, I heard his solo performance of Naima from the Massey Hall performance, and once again, it blew my socks off; the third, and perhaps my favorite, is a live recording of Straphangin' in Japan, maybe 1981 or 1982.
I really enjoy how he weaves through virtuosity into soulful passages that are as smooth as butter. It's wonderful that he lived in a time where he could record as often as he did.
As a saxophonist, I feel like the vast majority of us have to have that "I'll never be Brecker moment", and it used to upset me, but these days, I'm just happy to have witnessed all of those moments.
      Take care.

What has always intrigued me about Michael's playing is listening to him do these absurd brain melting fast passages and effortlessly flowing into the absolutely sleeziest, raunchiest, and most bad ass sounding blues licks to finish the phrase. It never fails to amaze me and I can't help but yell and cheer every time I hear him do it on a solo.

My first encounter with Michael Brecker was on the "Heavy Metal Bebop" album in the early 1980s. I was in music school then, at a time when college jazz programs were few and far between, and I was barely beginning to wrap my ears around Charlie Parker. Now here was this guy playing things on the tenor that I couldn't begin to fathom. How do I even describe my reaction. "Wow!" seems woefully inadequate, but I've been saying it ever since every time I've listened to, and continue to listen to, Michael. Beyond wow, what really can you say? As far as I'm concerned, Michael Brecker is the pinnacle of where technical mastery, musicality, and creativity converge. Thank you for sharing this!

Hi Fabio, thanks! I do - partly - agree with that. It definitely changes meters in terms of feel, and the bridge is mainly in 3/4.
As I felt it and consulted with a very good drummer, it is mainly in 4/4 for the a section (though with some crossrhythms) and the bridge is mainly 3/4. I chose to go for one 4/4 meter, as that does work and keeps the uniformity.
There are many choices to be made to turn it into sheet music, and this one is the one I felt represented it best at the time. I wonder, how do you hear it? Would love to know :)

I think it's mostly in 6/8 with some irregular measures in between.
When I tried to transcribe it I couldn't believe how a seemingly simple song could be so complicated. Regarding the form, what I found was:
      [A]: 666564 (3x)
      [B]: 664 (4x)
Mike's solo starts at the 2nd eighth note of the 4th measure.
