When I am packing for a trip, I always go through all the pockets, inside, outside and zippers.
Especially if you're traveling to another country.
Period. No exceptions. I check every crevice of a bag before I use it.
I don't, but I will now
no excuses you have months to weeks to check your stuff before you set sail , You going to another country you cannot plead ignorance no more than you can in the U.S. and not be held accountable, also as for the news anchors siding with him and trying to some how take a fear shot about the tourism income the country makes is laughable of they think it will effect others being the avg cruiser has sense enough not to bring somthing like drugs , ammo, or weapons period
also your absolutely right most gun owners do use separate gear /Bag etc used for hunting or range visits anyway.
As a responsible gun owner when I do go to the range I have a range bag for transporting guns and ammo. By no means do I ever use that bag for anything else.
Exactly. I have range bags and at no point do I ever mix bags. And I also clean my weapons and count every round before and after the range. Like I can’t even fathom “not knowing” I have random rounds some where. That’s insane.

When you get to the point where you don’t know how many guns you have you need more then one bag. And if you are an instructor you have like 20 “bags” cause it is your job.
Exactly, my bullets never wind up in my travel bag.
just being smart.
As a gun owner who does a lot of flying, I don't feel sorry for this guy at all. I keep ammo in a separate container for road trips. If I fly, I am going to really be aware of what was in the bags before to avoid this kind of problems. I today's world you have to take responsibility. Give him 6 months and $5000 to $10,000 fine.
I say give him a year, but then again the 12 year penalty is to deter arms traffickers.
But this is the 5th guy. Sorry, he's got to do the full term. It will deter anyone else from this behavior. If he was the 1st or 2nd you kinda feel bad but this is becoming a pattern. He has to be a cautionary tale.
Fellow gun owner here and I agree with you. I use a separate container and luggage for my firearms+ammo altogether that is designated ONLY for that purpose.
I don't even own a gun & I'm going to make sure I don't have any ammo!

Being in possession of chewing gum and the stiff fine that can come with it in Singapore, hasn’t discouraged tourism.
wow, I havn't thought about this in YEARs, it blew my mind at the time when I first heart that.
We took our college-age kids on their first international vacation this year to Cozumel.
I literally gathered them all in the living room and gave them all the rules to follow when traveling internationally. I even told them that they didn't know what to do to come find me, and w4e must triple-check anything. We want to bring back into the country to make sure we can import it via customs. I even talked to them about the process of declaring items when you come back into the United States.
I took my family out of the country. And it was my responsibility to make sure they were prepared. The trip went off without a hitch. I've also traveled all over the world for leisure and work. I've known for twenty years to look up the rules before I land on foreign shores. I've had spectacular adventures all over the planet.
I have sympathy for these situations. But in the age of the internet, nobody should be getting caught off guard by rules in other countries. This is a very hard lesson many Americans need to learn. American rights do not follow you outside of our borders.
I think the penalty is too harsh for the crime. But I'm also not a citizen of that country, so my opinion is moot.
Well said. Here in Canada we see Americans come in with restricted weapons, they are always shocked when they get arrested. Guns can be brought into the Country legally, but it's a restricted few types. Most are headed to Alaska.
Come on people, there's lots of money to be had in trafficking ammo. That many people did not just have a whoops. Not saying all of them are shady but loose ammo used for hunting just mistakenly rolling around in your luggage. There are a lot of holes in these stories.

But but the cowboy hat?!🤠
This happened to us when we were cruising out of Galveston, Texas. My husband had used one of his hunting bags for travel and he had checked it 3 times over but still missed 4 shotgun shells. We were detained by security, the police were called to the port, the ship security came off the ship. It was a big deal (for us). My husband had to write a statement of explanation and we turned over the rounds to the police officer. Thankfully we were still allowed to sail.
You are right, my first thought was why not have separate bags. The only thing I can imagine is if these guys are using a backpack. If they are going to deer camp, the gun range and then vacation. And TSA misses a lot of things, especially if you travel during the holidays.
Funny thing is that I took a trip recently and had a bunch of my jewelry in a bag. They held back my purse and luggage, passing several other bags that were behind mine in front of mine. I kept staring at the agent at the place that you put the bag on the belt because I felt uncomfortable with him. When he finally sent it through, they decided to search my bag. TSA admitted they wanted to check the jewelry. That was the sole reason they wanted to search the bag and went straight for the compartment it was in. So the technology is there to definitively say what an object is before the bag was opened. They were using the 3D x-rays so they could see that the jewelry wasn't concealing any drugs or anything. I had to chastise them for demanding to go through my jewelry. I wasn't coming from overseas where they might have been interested in what I had failed to declare, but they went through my stuff until I got nasty because that specific reason for a search was actually illegal. So now how is it that they missed bullets with all of these people?
Turks and Caicos just recently introduced the penalty of 12 years for tourists caught with ammunition. Before they paid a fine. The fine was not a sufficient deterrent. That also means that there were tourists bringing in ammo for the wrong reasons, and all using the same excuse. Your hear one side of the story. "It was not my intent". Yet five persons are facing sentencing since the 12 year penalty was introduced. You only need to smuggle in one bullet to harm someone. And I am sure someone would pay a high price just to secure that one bullet. I would like to hear the side of the Turks and Caicos police.
True. I mean you never know which of these guys were gonna sell it or something. They need to step it up and increase the punishments. Sounds like it's a lot harder now to smuggle into turks and caicos than it is to smuggle out of the US.
I agree. There seems to be intentional action... possibly for profit. Just weren't expecting to get caught.
wow its NEW?! this must be why so many in such short of a time. I went to Bermuda this year, 9 years for a single bullet. I do not think that is a new law there though. - this makes more sense now, the amount of news stories regarding this.

Hey Jay ur trending on MSN. Saw this b4 it uploaded to my TH-cam page. Wow congratulations 🎉
No way? Really???
How is this situation going to frighten others from traveling there? Why are they even using the bags they use for hunting to travel with? Like someone else in the comments mentioned, I have a separate suitcase and carry-on foe travel. If I were a hunter, I would have a separate bag for that, which would be stored in a separate location in my house or storage area. I think they were taking ammunition over there for other reasons, but got caught. Common sense would say check the laws of other countries before going, but not all sense is common.🤷🏾♀️
agreed. People don't need to be frightened, they just need to leave their ammo/guns at home. If you're not going to travel to a country because they might enforce their own laws, then you absolutely shouldn't be travelling to other countries.
I see a TREND in the pictures. 😅
That part
Rednecks?
1 of these things is not like others, 1 of these things are the same = CAUCASUS MOUNTAIN PEOPLE that have the American mentality that they're above the law.
Exactly he was smuggling. Or something.
This is so avoidable. I have a set of luggage for car travel and a set for airline travel. I have a carry-on for car travel and a carry-on for airline travel. Pick a bag color for your gun range and hunting bag, and use it for only that.
People don't know that this could be a problem and would never think of doing this. I'm sure they would it if someone recommended it. They don't tell you do this when you buy ammunition.
Exactly!!! No excuse, either lazy or ignorant.
Unfortunately, this man had to learn the hard way.
Some people are entitled and are use to not having to abide by rules in the US.
My husband (police at the time) had loose ammo in his (work) backpack that he rushed and packed for a trip. Got to LAX and the only reason he wasn’t arrested by TSA is because he worked p/t at LAX and they knew it was a mistake. From then on the work bag and travel bag are NEVER the same. I purchased a designer bag that can not be confused as a work bag 😓
Sounds like a privilege
Idk. There's a part of me that cant understand why this happened since you should pack your luggage for your trips. You would notice if you leave ammo in your luggage.
Having said that, i have found stuff in my luggage, mid trip, from previous trips.
You really can't blame TSA. TSA catches many firearms and knives every day. A bullet in a back pack going thru TSA is extremely small on there screen. Missing it was operater error on the X ray machine. Can't blame all of TSA for that.
@Shaladash No you can't but if that makes you feel better have at it!!
That will not deter me from visiting the island. I don't have a gun so I would not have ammunition. After awhile it's not going to be acceptable to say it's an accident. How do you pack your bag and not know it's the same bag you have the ammunition in?
You are absolutely correct. I am retired military and still shoot regularly. I have a range bag that holds my pistols and ammunition. I would never put either of those things in my luggage for travel for just this reason. I would also question how these keep getting though the TSA.
If he didn’t know the ammo was there, how can we know his intent? And what will “imprisoning” him do? Just. What. It’s. Doing.
1. Making an example of him.
2. Serving as a reminder of what can happen when you break an international law.
3. Prove that apparently, THEIR security is stronger than OUR TSA.
I hope all works out for him though. I’m sure this will take both a physical and emotional toll on them.
I get it I have several firearms and I have a dedicated bag for my firearms when I go to the range so that there is never any cross contamination for this very reason.
Someone like that man should not be allowed a gun. He is clearly careless or intend the ammmo to be resold.
First guy... ok, maybe it was an accident BUT ANOTHER ONE? Nope.... he's at least the FIFTH guy
It’s pretty simple. I’m from Texas so I’m used to guys similar to this… They think they’re above the rules and laws. They think their ignorance to the laws are excuses for why they do not have to follow them. It doesn’t apply to them. To them they made a “simple mistake” so they shouldn’t get in trouble for it.
Your hunting bag should be different from your international luggage. PERIOD!!
It is a shame to be incarcerated because of simple stupidity. And that is what happened. Why don't people use common sense? Then he asks how his being jailed will help. He is incredibly naive.

Amazing how many Americans haven't figured that out. An American whined at our border (Canadian)) that his 2nd amendment was being violated. It's like "dude, sit down & shut the f up. You're in Canada now. Not your country, it's our country & our laws.
This is so American (speaking as an American). The funny thing is these individuals are usually the main ones saying, "if you don't want to go to jail, than don't break the law." Let me honest, he only has a problem with it because he got caught. I only give a bit of sympathy to the first person who got arrested right after the law changed. But at this point, there is no excuse. I don't understand why someone would just have random rounds of ammunition in their bag. As adults, we have to take accountability and make sure we understand the laws of other countries.
And everyone keeps saying that how did it get through TSA. We are assuming he had it in a carry-on; it could have been in a checked bag. In that case, you are allowed to carry ammunition. So you can get out of the country with a weapon/bullets, but it doesn't mean you won't get in trouble where you are going.
Maybe it happened before but we’re hearing about it now because the penalty is more serious
I'm having déjà vu. How many times has his happened now? Hard to feel sorry for someone that's stuck on a Caribbean island.
These adults i assume, are licensed firearm carriers who are trained in the use and storage of the same. Are gun regulations so casual in their home States as to create this dangerous carelessness. They are 100 % responsible, no excuses.
You don’t have to be licensed for firearms in the US. We have the 2nd Amendment.
How was it DANGEROUS???
Are u really that ignorant ?
Redstaters 😅😅😅
Abide by the laws of the countries you are visiting. Your "privilege" will not protect you from arrest, prosecution, and possibly a prison sentence.
Bullets or Kilos... either way, you fucked up.
I suppose this is what happens when you get over complacent with gun laws. Yes it was only four rounds of ammunition, an insignificant amount. But how do the authorities in the Caribbean know he isn’t supplying it to someone who already has the gun for it? It would only take one bullet to kill a person! Here in England where we have very strict gun laws he would also be in very serious trouble if found with any ammunition.
I’m sorry to say he has committed a serious crime in that country (it may only be classed as a minor mistake in the USA) and now has to face the consequences however bad they seem. It may seem a very minor thing in America to inadvertently carry four rounds of ammunition, but in other countries it’s considered to be a serious offence. He should have checked his bags thoroughly when he packed them. Or have a separate bag entirely for his guns and ammunition and never use it for travelling.
What I don't understand is why do they not just completely emptied the bag, pockets and all?
No doubt on knowing what’s in your bag. It’s smuggling if you bring drugs whether it’s “accidentally” or not. “I didn’t know that was there” doesn’t work when for example going to Florida from California with a joint.
Q: "Why does this keep happening? Don't most people use different bags for traveling?"
A: There are so many people that have guns. Most will use a separate bag, and most that don't will remember to check thoroughly for ammunition. We're just seeing the small percentage that don't think of this being a problem ahead of time.
It's their rule, Americans has to respect there rules.....periodt!

I like separate bags, but they also need separate pants. This is America, we have bullets in our pockets in jeans and jackets. Ammo is like loose coins.
People need to be careful. Other countries don't play around with their gun laws. I once had a guy pulled off my flight in Singapore by police for having a mock plastic bullet on his keychain. I don't know what happened but at very least he missed his flight.
So here's the thing. Look at it from Turks and Caicos. If it was one American once or twice a year, that would be maybe cause for asking for leniency. But this is the 5th American in 5 months. If this is average over the years..... we are looking at around 12 times a year over who knows how many years. That from a citizen of Turk and Caicos is a complete disrespect of an entire nation laws.
If this was the other way around. If it was a law that say Germans or Koreans broke once a month every time a tourist came here, Americans would be outraged and not have any sympathy for those "foreigners" no matter if each one of the offenders says it's an honest mistake and they shouldn't be held to the law that the rest of the nation is held to.
Also where is the travel agents, the family member, SOMEONE telling people that they should look into the country they are going to and their laws. You would think with as much as this is in the news as of late, people would be scouring the laws of other countries instead of blaming those countries for enforcing the laws. At some point those countries won't be friendly to Americans because they won't lose all their tourism if they make American non-gratis to their country.

Ammunition is the same as importing a gun. Anyone can 3D print a gun nowadays all you need to do is get your hands on ammunition.
I can not understand why they are not throughly checking out bags prior to packing. My hunting / camping bags are separate from travel bags. They are never mixed.
