I don't think the movie is what did it for him, its getting out of the big spotlights and doing things that he wants and not things that are expected of him.
He was/is much better off then most people feeling an existential crisis in life. Because he can articulate how he feels. Some people don't know how/why they feel the way they do. Which is probably why this song is so important in my eyes.
Maybe I’m looking too deep into it but one thing I’ve noticed is that Bo has always had trouble ending songs. Usually ends funny songs by slamming his hands against the piano or just screaming. However the end of this song wasn’t complete it was that last note that set it apart. It felt incomplete a lot like bo. He is grateful for all he has and his success but he still doesn’t feel satisfied or happy with it. He can picture his own happy ending which is why all of his songs don’t really have one.
I look too deep into his songs all the time, and I love this analysis. Never viewed it that way, but yeah, so many weirdly ending songs. Words words words and Don’t Wanna Know come to me first for some reason as examples.
Dude, but this analysis can be traced back to his ORIGINAL TH-cam songs too. He's made jokes about how he doesnt know how to end songs... and he's talked about dealing with Anxiety since high school... welp there goes my heart
My favorite example of this is “Goodbye” from Inside. The song starts formulaic (verse, chorus, verse, chorus), but goes into a bridge (a little bit of everything all of the time) which then goes into another bridge (call me up and tell me a joke), and gets interrupted by the heavenly voices which ends the song.
He didn’t do this at the show when I saw him in November of 2015. When I eventually saw the special on Netflix I was surprised to see one last song played, this song. Lemme tell ya, nothing on that streaming service ever made me cry as much as this song did.
I don’t know if he did it live at all, actually. I remember the night it dropped on Netflix a bombardment of people were tweeting him “Are You Happy?” and a few people that saw it on tour started freaking out that something happened or something and were asking why people were tweeting him. They apparently had never heard the song because he didn’t play it at their respective shows. It’s shot so well and it’s like the best ending i’ve seen to a comedy special. Only prodigy Bo Burnham could achieve that.
Now the show is done I hope that you had gut-trembling or something resembling fun And if you watch this thing alone You probably didn't laugh, but maybe a few times you exhaled out of your nose But if you hated it, that's fair But either way, could you find a little more time for a parting questionnaire? On a scale from one to zero, are you happy? 'Cause you're on your own from here, so are you happy? I'm open to suggestions, are you happy? But what the fuck kind of question is "Am I happy?" I really wanna try to get happy And I think that I could get it if I didn't always Panic every time I'm unhappy like I'm owed some life Where I'm always, like, happy Which is stupid 'cause I wouldn't even want it if I got it Wait, oh god, my dad was right So if you know or ever knew how to be happy On a scale from one to two now, are you happy? You're everything you hated, are you happy? Hey, look Ma, I made it, are you happy?
I listen to this and Can't Handle This, and I don't understand why so many people were shocked by Inside. I don't feel like enough people really listened to his songs like this. The signs were there, people just didn't pay enough attention to them.
the song always seems like something a teen just about to graduate would sing at a "end-of-the-year-talent-show!" it just makes me feel like a teen is so done and sad about what they wasted doing in highschool so they specifically ask to do their talent last just to get the "it's really over from here" vibes. maybe I have something to look forward to doing in highschool after all
Listened to this on repeat for the last hour. My best friend in the world committed suicide and I needed to cry. Godsdamn but thank you Bo for this masterpiece. I wouldnt have gotten through this week without this.
He's not happy. He's not happy with comedy. That's why he quit. We didn't throw him to the curb, hopefully we never will, because he still entertains us, he did this for himself, and to himself. Man, I wish he would come back.

I worry about this kid.
I hope so too. He does seem happier since his movie did well

To think this was his final song for 5 years.
And then, the funniest thing happened.
How did he perform this without breaking down into tears? I cry every time
Well he didn't preform this on stage. And also he did take theatre
right after his make happy performance he cried immediately after leaving the stage :(

I cry at the "look Ma I made it" part. I'm sorry I didn't make it Ma.
You still have a chance
Don't worry man, trying is good even if you didn't make it try help the new generation get there not for your sake but for theirs
@ThatGuy53297 hope you made it 4 years later buddy
And to think that after all that time he was doing better.
Then the funniest thing happened.

Exactly!!! He literally said-
"You can tell them anything if
You just make it funny, make it rhyme"
Strangely.... this gives me peace
No other song makes me feel as sad and empty as this and i have to applaud bo for this
All I want is for you to be happy Bo. We love you.
This makes me want to be the performer I know I have inside of me. Crushed by debt and depression.

I just finished watching this on netflix and I'm still ugly crying

"What the fuck kinda question is am I happy?" Best line
I am listening to this in the halls of my high school. I’ve never felt so understood, and so hated at the same time.

I’ve only recently got into him and I watched inside before I watched make happy so this broke my heart. I hope he’s okay -_-
