Hyrdraulic pump on the back makes me think it was powering a splitter. That looks like a very well engineered engine. Controls in the right place, seems fairly easy to work on, compact form.

In my whole entire life.... and I've lived rural, in the Rocky Mountains to the plains and in suburbs, I have never been "Out and About" and found or seen a "Lawn Mower" engine lying in the tall grass pitched sideways..... I think James has a destiny in life..... some folks rescue puppies and cats... On the bright side, it really looks like this engine wasn't in the location where James found it for very long.... it wasn't mud crusted, weathered or beaten and of course the engine shows life on first pull. I loved watching the video.... thanks James for the reasonable, deductible and sensitive nature of your troubleshooting. I tend to be a little less patient than you are....

    Meanwhile,
The farmer went home on his tractor to get a new rubber damper for the coupling as the old one was whipped out.
He hid the engine in high grass, pretty sure he would be able to remember where he hid it.
Next day he comes back, ..... wth did I put it ?
The farmer had a bad day. Poor sod.
Cheers, and well done James. Young James will be a mechanic, just like his father.

Depends on how bad the carb looks. I do not measure it, just pour until I get the right color. I put hot water in from the sink and turn the heater on, but I do not wait normally for the max temp. Probably around 150F. The hotter the better.

You are right to give a higher idle speed. Most don't understand, the manurfacturer wants usually 1200-1400roms, so the flywheel fan promotes good cooling through the cylinder head fins.....As always Jim, good job...

Hmmmm. Now this is making me want to make sure the valve clearance is good on the mower and tiller. They run ok but have a little miss throughout the rpm range. Dont think they have a fuel issue because I use fresh 93 octane. Both are Briggs &Stratton engines. Thank you for sharing this. Maybe I will regain some lost power.

I can believe someone would throw away an engine that worked, I went to a junkyard one time and found a chainsaw, I pulled the cord to check compression, and it fired right up with the weakest pull, and another time I found a Honda eu1000i, all it needed was the water out of the carburetor and it ran like new.

I just bought an 18-year-old used generator with this engine but mine’s 10 hp.. It is a good, smooth, quiet, engine, considering that it’s running between 3730 - 3750 on idle. It’s quieter than one of the Chinese Clone “PowerHouse” that I had by Northern Tool at one time. Despite this being an 18-year-old Generac with the same 10 hp engine, I don’t think it’s been used much generator head works phenomenal and the brushes aren’t hardly worn at all.

Thart starter type relyes on the screw providing enough downwards pressure on the friction washer that is supposed to be there holds the plastic dog guide in place thus kicking the dogs, Adding lube makes it worse. Well in this instance lube was worse...

I've had them come in the shop and you could take off the air filter , start it up , put the filter back on and kill it ! Dude, pay attention here. THAT is a splash lubed engine. Idling down is NOT recommended. Run at full 3600rpm for max engine longevity per Briggs and Stratton. Also the engine COOLING suffers tremendously when you do this. These are air cooled engines that need full revs for max air flow. Set the engine at 3600rpm and leave it alone.
