Just picked up a ZV-E1 at Best Buy as an open box for $1,200 I did not need it but at that price I couldn’t pass it up… it pairs very well with my A7 IV
Been waiting for a full review on this cooler. I have the V2 version, but it couldn’t keep my a7iv from overheating. I think I’ll definitely be picking this one up.
Absolutely great video and series. You are one of the few people that actually try to find your own ways to solve these issues and are honest. Did it also solve the issue on the a6700?
Thanks! I picked the Sony ZV-E1 in 4K/120 because it is the worst case scenario. So if it worked for that situation, it should be more than ok with the A6700.
Picked one up and used it for the first time tonight at a basketball game. Worked wonders to keep me shooting on 4k60 all game with my a7iv after previous overheating issues.
If u look at more professional cinema cameras they have built in fans to keep an ideal temperature for the sensor to perform the best. Some have long boot up time partly because of this (to achieve right temperature for the sensor). However I don’t know what the ideal temp is or if its true that the sensor introduces more noise the hotter it gets, all i do know is that there’s an ideal temperature range for each sensor to work the best.
Hi. Love your videos I’m starting sports videography and trying to buy the Sony zve II. What budget lens do you recommend for basketball videography and football?
Plenty of good options for you to choose from in my budget sports videography recommendation page kit.co/Beyond_the_Game/best-sports-filming-kit-on-a-budget
Unfortunately build in fan makes camera not proper weather sealed. Imagine you mainly film in dusty environments (mountings with high winds, desert and so on...). Your build in fan soon will be filled with dust and you will have trouble with camera repair. On other hand external fun you can easy and not costly replace.
@@maximvasilyev8003 Im not an expert on that topic but I’m pretty sure all cameras have some sort of airflow which includes strategically placed very small openings. Otherwise they would overheat way faster than they do now. Typically when cameras claim to be weather sealed, they are specifically talking about the lens mount. Because this is where humidity and/or dust would do the worst damage to both the lens and the camera sensor.
@@BeyondTheGame_E If camera is properly weather sealed (and I believe that all new cameras are) than there are no any even small openings through which moister or dust can go inside the body itself. In my example dust will not go inside camera body, but it will go inside fan. If it build-in type, it will require replacement and it will be costly because it integrated with camera body. By the way in Sony manual (FX30, if I remember correctly) written that it should not be used in dusty environment. External, not expensive, fan solve that problem.
@@maximvasilyev8003 like I said, I’m not an expert on this topic so I could be totally wrong. But I suspect that we are both right about some things and wrong about others. 👍🏽

Tried ZV-E1 with Ulanzi CU01, 4k XAVC 120p , 20 degree indoor, it only last 20 minuutes before shut down. I was wondering did you shoot the game with several short clips ( < 15mins ) ?
Did you change the camera temp setting to high? because 20 minutes seems extremely low. That being said, I never film an entire game without stopping the recording. I start recording before each play and stop when the play stops.
I guess their priority was to be able swap batteries so that you can use the camera for hours. I assume increasing the battery life would have been very complicated but would have ultimately only added a few minutes of battery life.

@@BeyondTheGame_Edont get me wrong, I have both version and I love them but if you take into account the size of the fan in the first version, I can easily understand that there is not much space left for the battery. On this new version it is a different story, the battery unit is nearly as big as the fan, meaning it should be able to provide much more capacity.
Mode one is not very loud but mode 2 is more powerful and also louder. But I don't think either modes are loud enough to make a difference when filming sports. Especially if you use a shotgun mic.
@@BillAshtonNelo if your mic is withing 2m/6feet of the camera in quiet studio, even on level 1 the fan will get picked, 2 even louder. Outside it should be fine. I have 256Gb cards so I never use more than one card for a game. But if I was filming multiple games in one day, I would probably bring my laptop and backup my footage on it after each game.
@@BeyondTheGame_E I used this camera, while everyone was complaining about the heating, I managed to get unlimited 4k 24p 422 10bit recording by just opening the covers, of course the duration will not be this long at 120p, but this method can double the recording time without any device, I said this because I saw that you were complaining about the heating after recording for a long time, this method does not cause you to lose anything after all

What are you guys doing to overheat your cameras, I've done several interviews at 24p no issues. Even done a 4hr job, no issues. 60p Is overrated and if you need it for a specific shot just switch over for it.
I shoot sports for highlight purposes mostly so filming at high frame rates to be able to slow the footage down in post production is important. And since I can't know in advance when a play worthy of slow motion is about to happen, I don't really have a choice but to record in 60 or 120p the entire time. All that to say that I mostly film at 4K/120p 4:2:2 10-bit and any camera with no internal cooling system will overheat at some point using those specs. And also, keep in mind that I'm not talking about recording a 20-minute interview but rather a 2-hour sporting event.
Yeah that makes total sense especially for sports, but Is it narrative? or just highlights. I shoot sports docs, main action for sure I switch over to 60p, but I would challenge you to be more selective to prioritize the camera from overheating. I've done countless multiple hour interviews, and 4-8hr days full recording, no issues. I also have a FX3, FX6, A7IV, A7RIV, and two ZV-E1, non of them overheated on me on 24p and with minor usage of 60p.
@@JaneivyHilario Yeah but high frame rates are a must for what I do. It's not narrative, it's all action based. I make highlight reels and hype reels, full of speed ramping and slow motion action. What you see on jumbotrons before an NHL or NBA game is about to start.
This camera is intended more for vloggers so the expectation is that users won't shoot very long clips with it and therefor won't have to deal with overheating issues. But it does have the same video quality as much more expensive cameras. Like I said in the video, this camera is $1900 and the cooling fan combo is $40. Meanwhile an FX3 (similar video quality but with an internal fan) costs $3700. So if you want the quality of an FX3 but you don't have the money for it, this camera is a great alternative. Ultimate overheating camera is the R5, on a more serious note, should compare noise performance between cooled and uncooled, hot sensors = more noise
Is that a fact about hot sensors creating more noise? I’ve never heard that before
