Fat Burrito Made with Love and in East L.A.

- East L.A., what is it known for? Primarily good Mexican food. Sure, this one is a 'hole in the wall' spot, but Gerson and Celia Montes have been at this restaurant for 31 years. They know what they are doing.
It's not a fancy place but the atmosphere is friendly and the food tastes homemade, like your abuelita cooked for you. The prices are reasonable and at times the breakfast burritos are ready to go.
They open early, 5:30am through 4pm on Tues-Sat. If you know what you want, call ahead! 4505 Floral Drive, Los Angeles CA 90022
This is how Mexican rice should be: flavorful and fluffy, and refried beans: tasty and filling. Try it out for yourself. They include their handmade sauces: red and green. These run pretty spicey, but are just right to give the tacos or burritos the punch that they need! Also the beans are good, half smashed, half full and I believe they taste the old fashioned way because of lard. (Do the research, lard is not as harmful as thought. In moderation, of course.)
Congratulations to Gerson and Celia for recently having their 54th Anniversary!
Thank you Lono, for the use of your cover of "Senora no. 2". All his music is available at lonomusic.com

I like the history of this place. Restaurants like this are always the best!
I have passed this place dozens of times and I finally stopped to try. Honestly it was because a famous Mexican food stand was closed near by. I was so disappointed that I wanted to satisfy my "Burrito fix." That's when I stopped here on the way home.
NEVER HEARD OF THIS PLACE BEFORE AND I BEEN AROUND EAST LOS MOST OF MY LIFE...
It's an easy spot to miss, most are getting on the freeway or driving under the 710. It literally is a hole in the wall🥴
My mom lives down the street from that spot been there a couple of times it’s good honestly
Thanks for your personal opinion, I want to support them!
Have lived around about 10 miles of this place off and on in the last 50 years and never heard of it. Thanks.
BTW, there's a really good Mexican bakery on Ford a few blocks south of Floral.
Thanks for the suggestion, there are a lot of good food places around there
I live for these neighborhood places. Thanx.
Us too! Thanks for watching! This couple works so hard to keep the place going.
Man 57 years living close by and I never ate there, well that's gonna change now. Gonna hit this place up Monday 😋
Thanks for trying! Give us your opinion. They have a lot of good competition around there. But I'm not sure about the days they are working, call up to verify: 323-266-3514
Homemade style.
I just posted something similar. As a kid, my family would go to the Floral Drive-in, which is no longer there. Good memories.
@@mrxman581 yes, I remember that! We never went there because we couldn’t understand Spanish, but driving by you could see the screen. 😂
Me too. I always pass through there and I have never tried it.
@@lisad56 If you do, let us know your opinion! Thank you!
Damm!! How come I’ve never heard of this place till now!! Gotta go asap!!
This is a tiny place, just showing respect to the nice older couple doing everything there.
Looks so ono'licious! I miss good Mexican food.
🍍😎🤙🌴🥥🌺🌈
I do enjoy their food their. They are a sweet couple too!
Daaaaaaaaaamn this looks absolutely delicious!!!!
Thanks, but in reality they look much better. I cut them in half to show the ingredients, (and it's doesn't look as appetizing that way) but the smell and actual looks are yummy. I hope someday you can try the place.
@@c_honda I grew up in Southern California in the Covina area so I am familiar with good authentic Mexican food, I will be adding this place to my list to try in June when I am out in the L.A. area. Awesome video, you showcased their food well, I can't wait to eat there now 😋
@@NewAmericanRevolution thanks for your words of confidence, I hope it meets your expectations 🥹
@@c_honda I'm sure it will, I can practically taste it through the screen
@@NewAmericanRevolution 🥹😆😉okay but. As Andy Bumatai says, “don’t quote me, I may be wrong”
Whoa! This looks delicious.
It is! Looks better in real life, thanks for tuning in!
Maybe I should go up there someday and do a story about them. If I do, I’ll let you know.
@@UFOBobTVI hope you do!
Yummy
True, let's help these 'mom n pop' stores!
I live in Holland, MI and there are two locations here called The Fat Burrito. I wonder if this is owned by the same owner(s), or it's coincidence they have the same name
I really doubt that they are connected. They are a two person business and I think in L.A. there's even another restaurant called "Fat Burrito." I appreciate you watching, hope their food is as good as the one here😉.
Delicious 😋🤤
Thank you 😋 I wish I did better photos of the food. It's just good old fashioned Mexican style.
@@c_honda I honestly think you did a good job 👍😉
@@crystalhernandez1059 thanks for your moral support😃
@@c_honda you got it 💯
Looking forward to the next video 📸
Grew up in EAST LOS. Seen this place many times bur Never thought of stopping by. I guess I'll take the drive from castaic to check it out. 🙏
Thank you for watching and considering the diner, but ack! don't make it your only reason to come back home! Come enjoy the nostalgia of lots of spots around town and see the good and bad changes.
THANKS YOU GOODNESS 🌟 DAPHNE COTTON ALWAYS 💜 , AWESOME
I appreciate you checking out my channel and maybe checking out their little place!
Great video man 😎🤠🇲🇽 Name of the song anybody?
Thanks for watching! I have the name in the description and I think the singer Lono melded two songs together for it, I may have edited down to the first part however.
@@c_honda Thanks ✯ᴗ✯

Got a place similar here called big burritos. It’s to expensive though. They charge like 18 for a burrito, 6 for the tacos, and the tacos are small.
That is pretty high for a burrito! But if it's an excellent one, maybe once in awhile I would buy one😉.
Those are West LA prices! 😄
@@c_honda i believe they charged 3 extra bucks for my burrito, cuz I added guacamole and lil queso, it was a $18 burrito. It might been 14.99 and they always overprice the extras. I honestly should just walked out after the cashier said $47 bucks with zero drinks lol.
@@krissanders987 It's hard for any of us to accept the raising prices. During covid, this place sold breakfast burritos for $3, they weren't very large but it was assorted and tasty. Now I think they cost $7.
For my money, it’s King taco and Lupe’s burrito. Those are the true East LA icons.
I agree with King Taco, but I've only been to a Lupe's in Alhambra, is it the same?
@@c_honda no when you get to Lupe‘s ask for the chili Colorado burrito and the chili Verde they’re both beef the bomb take limes with you. They don’t have limes.
@@petermitlo1551 gracias! Okay, I found it on google, it's pretty close to King Taco on 3rd St. But when I looked at the menu, there's no mention of chili colorado, but they do mention chili verde
They called the burritos, red or green one chili Verde and one is chili Colorado
No, not the Lupe’s in Alhambra East LA third Street where the King tacos at up the street on the same side
Every time I drive by
there it looks like the place is closed. I need to go by again and try them burritos.
They are elderly, maybe the best thing is to call ahead and make sure they are there. The couple are the ones that run the place. I always call in my orders now so I can easily pick them up. And, thanks for watching!
Will check out.
Thanks, give it a try. They are a hard working couple and have lots of nearby competition.
Will have to stop by next time im in L.A
Thanks for watching, please have an open mind, it's more on the 'home style' Mex food.
On Floral Dr. and Ford Blvd... Next to the 710 nb Fwy...😎👍
Right on!
I miss going to LA for a few days to go to the Dodger games and enjoying places like this. I no longer go to LA because it is now too dangerous to enjoy.
I understand what you mean, there are some areas I would not go, especially in the night. Downtown has really increased in homelessness, which is sad, for them and us. In that way, there is some uncertainty when you walk by, most are harmless, but others have some real mental problems. However, we have lots of places that we still enjoy. I need to take my chances and go to the East LA King Taco😎!
@c_honda LA is not dangerous. The homelessness issue has improved over the last year as well.
Only very small areas are sketchy. Places like Skid Row. East LA is fine, and so is the vast majority of the city, which is 500 square miles.
@mrxman581 that is not what my family says who still live and work in the area.
@@user-rp9om3pr6g
It depends on where and when you go.
East LA is not dirty like West LA.
I'm not extremely familiar with LA, but if you go east of the 6th Street bridge, which turns into Whittier Blvd. It is much cleaner than west of the 6th Street bridge, which is very dirty.
The difference is literally like night and day.
Every inch of West LA is sliced up into gang territories.
I'm sure East LA is as well, but it's so much cleaner and just more calm.
Whittier Blvd. Looks nice at night.
I've lived in this area all my life and never heard of this place. Sign says since 1946? I remember a Gar Dunos at that exact location in the 70's so maybe the name changed or they moved there from another location? Will have to give it a try one of these days.
Thank you for watching, and ask them if they worked under the Gar Dunos' name. By the way, there still is a Gar Dunos in Montebello on Beverly Blvd.
never ate there before and I live a block away from there crazy.
Hey, I appreciate you watching! Thank you for that. Someday maybe stop by and try their version of Mexican food.
@@c_honda How was it??
@@malo_213 I like the food, not fancy Mexican food food, but like your abuela makes it. Cheeseburgers pretty good too! Ask for fries to be crunchy
My man could’ve hooked it up just a tiny bit more on the aroz y frijoles for the tacos tho
Well, it's fair of you to give your opinion, let's others know...
Work, work, work C Honda, work your channel time. 👍
Yes, I worked on this , I hope this helps their business.
The Old Gardunos spot.
Hey, I think you are right! But it was a long time ago.
Its like uman̈as in el monte or Richards in Bassett. And snap e tacos in LA Puente ca.
Thank you for the comparisons! This can open our eyes to some more places in LA County which are worth checking out. You have an assortment of them across that area. Helpful, thank you!
@c_honda I love food lol, try titos market in el monte, great Argentinian empanadas.
@@vicchavez6570 thank you for sharing! For myself and others benefit.
You should have put the address and cross streets so people will know where it's located.
Thank you yes. I did put the address on the map in the video, I don't know if I put it in the description.
Always frustrates me when they don’t have a soda fountain. I want a coke with my food. I don’t want to pay crazy prices for a can.
I don't even remember what they have, but if you want the "mexican" coke, I think they had it in their refrigerator, but it was the glass bottle version.
@@c_honda No, it’s just, if I go there for a meal, I want a coke with that meal. They have a fridge and could likely sell me a can or bottle. However, If I pay a stupid price for a can or bottle, it’s unpleasant. If I then have to worry about only having this one little can or bottle, it’s unpleasant. If I want more and have to decide if I’ll pay a stupid price for more or do without, it’s unpleasant. If they had a fountain and I could just pay them, say $2 for a soda knowing I could fill it up as many times as necessary, much more pleasant experience.
@@hemaccabe4292 , got it. Yeah, this is a tiny business, it may not be the place for you, but there’s lots of bigger restaurants in the area!
@@c_honda It was still a very good video.
@@hemaccabe4292 , I appreciate your words. Thank you.
They do sheet metal too.
Well, their neighbor does. He's a good support for them, I'm glad they have him around.
What happened to Manny's El Locos ?
Good question. All the Manny's I knew are gone. A few of the places became "Chano's" which seemed to have similar Mexican food. I remember the Manny's in Monterey Park which was super busy at lunch (before then it was an A and W root beer car park.
🤙🏽👣🤙🏽
Thanks GB, for being so supportive!
Where in ELA ?
4504 Floral Dr, Los Angeles 90022 In the video I have a couple of maps showing where the place is. Just a couple streets south is Cesar Chavez Ave. They are right near the onramp to the 710 Fwy heading north, and diagonal to the CHP office.
Sorry but I lived 2 blocks from there for 10 years and tried this place multiple times out of laziness since it was so close, but it was always bad. The lady also has a bad attitude if you mention anything wrong with the food (witnessed her snap at a customer who said the food was cold and stale). That was the last time I ever went. Most of the time the restaurant looked abandoned and I understood why after every visit. Wouldn't recommend.
Thanks for your review.
Los 5 Puntos is BETTER!!!
Tell me about the place?
Insane! You didn’t try anything so we have no idea how the food tastes
I've eaten there a few times myself. It's old fashioned refried beans (I think made with lard) that is tasty. A lot of it is old style. The carnitas is good, take it from an expert (my brother.) and I like getting the breakfast burrito with chorizo and beans. I don't know how to make that like the abuelas do. Take a chance if you are nearby. Even their cheeseburgers and fries are pretty good.
To expensive😔
They were rather inexpensive before covid, the breakfast burritos were $3.50, but after the pandemic they had to raise their prices, like everyone else.
Good luck with the illegal street vendors, old business don't have a chance.
I do see some street vendors now, a lot came up during the pandemic I think. I leave it up to them as they are trying to make a living too.
LA has changed from what was a BEAUTIFUL CITY in the 70's to nothing but trashy & GHETTO!!!! Its actually embarrassing. I grew up there in the late 60's & 70's !!! What a ashame.
Some suburbs are still okay, but the homeless situation has really increased. Especially downtown where they put up their tents and authorities later come and take them down.
Rice in a burrito is just cheap filler. I'm over 60 and remember back in the day no one put rice in burritos. As best as I can tell I started seeing rice in burritos probably in my 30s. It's bogus.
I appreciate your opinion, I don't think it was in the breakfast burritos, but included in the regular burritos. I'd ask them to skip the rice, and the beans are a complement with their old fashioned style.
@@c_honda My point is that a burrito that includes cheap fillers is by default not a quality burrito. It might be fat but the cheap fillers mean it's made cheap, not with love.
Totally agree, I despise rice in a burrito 🌯
I think it's a LA thing they're starting to catch on to how San Diego does they're burritos though LOL they also don't put guacamole in their burritos
I make my own homemade burritos and almost always include Mexican rice in them cause I love it.
🤮
Ok, thanks for your opinion.
