That's Good! Classic Los Angeles Burritos: Part One

- Welcome to "That’s Good!," where we venture into the depths of Los Angeles to find the city's unsung culinary heroes. In this first episode, we journey into Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles, a connected series of neighborhood where food tells stories of culture, family, and history.
We start at El Tepeyac, home of the massive Manuel Special and the fiery Oki Burrito. These aren't your average burritos-they're hearty, packed with flavor, and served with a side of nostalgia. Next, we hit up Al and Bea’s, a place where simplicity reigns and the bean and cheese burrito is a legacy passed down generations. Finally, we end at Lupes Burritos in East LA, where they have implemented some tasty items to there arsenal of amazing, classic bean and cheese burritos.
These are the spots that have been feeding locals for generations, places where the menu hasn't changed much because it doesn't need to. We're talking about food that’s comforting, authentic, and deeply rooted in the community.
If you're a fan of real, no-nonsense eats and the stories that come with them, this is your show.

Thank you for calling it what it is. LA Mexican food
East of the River LA Mexican Food! haha definitely
Thanks for showing us this
David, loved this! The narration, photography, interviews, history, vibe, the classics- great work! Subscribed! One time Lupe's owner- John, warned me that the chicharrone sauce was extra hot this time; man that burrito drenched my entire head with sweat. So good, so flavorful despite the heat. Keep up the good work, brother!
@@sativabros thank you !
Perfect list. Lupes is so good especially with the red sauce 🔥🔥🔥.
I would love to see u hit La Azteca, 5 puntos and La Cocina Express
we did La Azteca
Growing up; my dad would bring home the Hollenbeck Burritos from El Tepeyac at least one Saturday a month. So delicious! Great memories... 🥰
Congratulations on your new channel. I love the quality of the production. Terrific background stories, interviews with the staff, and you do a fine job of hosting. I wish you great success! Just subscribed.

El Tepeyac! RIP Manny!
this is wild i went to EL TEPEYAC 38yrs ago WOW CRAZY😲😲
al and beas forever i used to live very close love going there. Long Live Boyle Heights
Socal Mexican food. The best. Don't forget Mitla's in San Bernardino.
Lived on 3rd and Rowan and every saturday my buddies and I would pick a place to have lunch and you can bet we hit all of the above mentioned and others .
I grew up in City Terrace and those are the spots. Great job 👍🏽
Awesome video!
thank you ! stay tuned more to come
East LA Mexican food just hits different. You gotta try it to know it
yes sir … this is a type of style of Mexican food in LA 🙌🏽
These are the culinary institutions of East L.A. they are part of L.A.s history they are family.
Lupe’s hands down, BEST
The Okie at El Tepeyac is my favorite. It is all that.
I moved too oklahoma lol they do serve all burrito with that! but they have one shrimp spinach topped with a cream chorrizo sauce thats kinda sweet its bomb! it may be bacon in it as well
Wow, really well produced video, great script, great voice! Hope your channel blows up, you deserve the views!
@@infopimpsrock3631 thank you! hope to have the next video out real soon!
Boyle Heights 🫶🏻
Nothing comes close to Lupes beans and that Red Sauce!
so fire !!
As someone who grew up and lives a few blocks from Lupes, this is a good showcase for them. The Manuels special is my favorite of all of these, but they pile yours high and always skimp on my orders. As someone who orders a Manuel's Special once a month, I can tell you they don't give you half that much meat on top as they do for you in the video. I love their food, but they keep getting smaller and skimpier as time goes on.
Never seen a red chili Verde.
Really good production values, glad I found this in my recommended!
thank you! we have more coming 🙌🏽 this is just the start
That’s chile Roja,AKA Red Burritos
Rojo*
Great show I didn't think you could beat that Okie burrito but that Red combo burrito that's something I could eat everyday glad to see places like these still around unfortunately most Mom n Pop places like this have sadly been stomped out in my area 😢 as for french fries give me Pork chili cheese fries from Taco Bender in San Bernardino so good one of the best pork chili verde burritos also
Great job, well said, please more post.
Segios Tacos in Commerce Ca.
Adelina would always give me a hard time when I ordered a burrito of my choice. I always ended up with what she thought I should eat, chile relleno burrito. She was tough, but she had a heart of gold.
Good first episode!
NOW, I COULD EAT THE BURRITO 🌯 BY MYSELF, IT WOULD TAKE ME A FEW DAYS TO EAT IT! LOL!!!😂👍🌯🍽️🍹🍮🎉🎉🎉 I LOVE BURRITOS TO GO ALSO!!! LA MEXICAN FOOD! I GET IT!!! 🍽️🍹🍓🥭🌯🌮🫔🍜🥩🍗
😮😂🙌🏽
La Azteca Tortilleria in Cesar Chavez is also another great burrito spot…. 👌🏼
absolutely! that’s coming 🙌🏽
There is a second La Azteca on Atlantic and 3rd, where that McD’s is. They open another location because of the huge lines at the one on Cesar Chavez. Taste exactly the same.
These are all excellent places but in all seriousness, try Jim's Burger, Soto & Whittier, carne asada burrito and have them add cheese. Breakfast burritos are the best as well. Their salsa is excellent. My favorite!
@@guaporichard thanks!
Thank you for the trip home ❤ saludos desde San Antonio Texas!
Nice narration to your food reviews man! Connecting to the soul of the food and providing history to the restaurant along with your own personal one. Whole story behind the food 👌

Awesome Video!
Lupe’s was a great spot, King Taco was a few blocks overs also. Used to work in Monterey Park and lived in Boyle Heights years ago and these spots were a go to for a lot of us come Lunch time.
I remember Lupe’s had a real home cooked flavor to, like my Mom cooked it up back there lol.
Lupe was a real character to, kind of a dry sense of humor who didn’t take crap from anyone, love that lady!
One time a dude was there eating his lunch and told her how he used to go there as a kid but hadn’t visited in years and she said “Ok so what do you want a prize or something, and why did you stop coming?” Friggin Savage and Hilarious at the same time.
😅😅 yep you hear lot of those stories .. you kinda had to understand that humor or you would think something else about her 😅. yeah they still do everything from scratch homemade
I always got the taquitos de guacamole. Out of sight!!
Tepeyac)Yes ! Legendary-my cousins and I would go there faded to try and win the prize $20 for🎉 eating an oversized burrito and never was able to finish it,😂😂😂and yes-you would be greeted with a shot of tequila and a warm welcome ….
Great video, I will most definitely be trying these places out, thanks for sifting those out for us 😊
thank you!
Will tip the fruit guy 5$ if he tells me if you were crying or not after that red salsa lol 😅…
@@EmakesItRain 😂
I wish we had something like Lupe's in the Bay area. Chili, cheese, guacamole and pastrami. Only in L A.
Al & Bea's - Bean & Cheese FRIED burrito is the bomb!! It's not on the menu so you have to ask for it.
la cumbre in san francisco!!🙏

Manuel once called my father at his home while I was visiting. I answered the phone and told him my father went to the store he'll be back in 15 minutes. Lupe’s is so much better than Al & bea’s! La Azteca has the best chile relleno burrito in LA! But Lupe comes close
hey stay tuned ! La Azteca 😮
I recently found out they have a second location on Atlantic and 3rd, in the McDonald’s strip mall. Everything tastes the same, as the original
I’m sorry but La Azteca is nothing special. They got good reviews mostly because of the tortillas that are made there but not because for their burritos or tacos. I was there last week and it’s was disappointing.

There was a very good taco place on Beverly for a few years, but it closed during Covid. It was a part of a small chain of Mexican restaurants from West LA. The name of the place was Tacomiendo.
Now, unfortunately, they only have the original restaurant, which I think is in Culver City. Loved their tacos dorados. On Tuesday they had Taco Tuesday specials, even better.
Great segment.

You need to go visit Montoya’s in Wilmington. Get the Oso burrito with a limenade.
PSA ANNOUNCEMENT.. THIS IS NOT REALLY LA MEXICAN FOOD.
@@breakyoselffool 1. this is East LA /East of the River Chicano Mexican food that multiple generations grew up with .. those who watched heard me talk about it
Bro you want a good burrito go to SUPER CUCAS in Santa Barbara you won’t be disappointed trust me!!!!!
What year is this in LA??? CANT BE UNDER newsom!!!!!
Tex mex style has nothing on mexican food. For example why put grated cheddar cheese on beans when you can put cotija or queso fresco or panela.
this isn’t Tex Mex this East Los Angeles/Boyle Heights 3 generations of Mexican American food.. nothing to do with Texas. these are foods that people grew up on. Not trying to be anything else
@DavidEatsLA it's similar to tex mex is what I was saying just look at the ingredients they are in your face telling you and yeah emphasis on the American on the Mexican American food. Just the beans is really mexican lol. I'm from l.a and I know east l.a very well, their flavors are more American that's why they don't have many great spots.
@@paquesepas6696 there are so many traditional regional mexican spots and pop-ups , probably form every state of Mexico if you know where to find em
in East LA/South LA
@paquesepas6696 Hahaha.. you think you know East LA and Boyle Heights, buy you don't. Not even close. You probably haven't been here since the 60s.
Los Angeles has so much variety in Mexican food it is unbelievable. In fact, I'm not even sure CDMX has the variety that Los Angeles has. You can find authentic Mexican food from all 32 Mexican states in one city. And, in many cases, multiple restaurants of the various regional cuisines throughout Mexico.
You know why that is? Because LA, more than any other American city, is continually getting new immigrants from Mexico.
Yes, we have our oldtimers like the ones in this video, but those were first opened when most Mexican families mainly cooked at home so they adapted their menus accordingly. When I was going to school in Boyle Heights you had a large amount of Japanese and Chinese families that lived in the area. They regularly ate at all these places, too.
Now, along with the OGs, you have great creative authentic Mexican food being cooked by newer immigrants from Mexico. For the most part these newer places are not being started by Mexican Americans. It's by Mexicanos, and as a Mexican American who grew up in the barrio, I love seeing how it continues to change and become it's own expanding universe. Provecho!
Need to keep heading east and get off the 60 at Garfield. Turn right and turn into J&S for their Chorizo burro, Bean&Cheese Burro and their Taco Plates. This is another Family place that's been around since the 60's.
@@nriqueog really good spot!
LA burritos are fucking trash.
J&S in montebello has the best chille relleno burrito evahh!
