I've been coming like forever... In Kauai there are a lot of places that have Saimin but they all came after dis place and Hamura is No Ka Oi !!! its like situated in a place where you would not want to go... years ago it was scary going back there in a industrial setting and it was like a old building left and open but it conquered the test of time and the Ladies that work there been there for Years.. or since it opened.. but still all other Saimin places are ok.. but if Hamura stays open, all other Saimin places are JUNK !!! and yes there Chiffon Pie is also awesome and a must before you leave. I can understand if they are using Spam now.. keep prices lower.. just as long as they dont put pieces os Bologna in there..
Thanks for you input. They are truly iconic, especially for Kauai. The one thing I believe is true is that with their regular saimin it's not spam, but luncheon meat.
Good yeah? I still think the noodles and dashi are good. The regular sizes uses lunch meat and some kamabuko and eggs. If you want more da kine toppings, got to get the "special."
I remember going to Hamura’s during the 70’s through the 80’s and it was good then I moved to Oahu back in 1991 and discovered Shiro’s and Shige’s which in my honest opinion are much better with larger menu and selections, up until my recent vacation to Kauai from Washington this past Christmas and new year weeks I asked about Hamura’s, I was told by my p and other childhood days that it’s not the same as it was 40-50 years ago when the original owner was still alive and did the cooking.
Thanks for your opinion, I too, have heard the same. And I appreciate the other Saimin places too. But maybe it's the nostalgia or just being there that still makes the food taste good. (Also I don't have many opportunities to have saimin.) The saimin stand looks nearly the same and the food comes fast and the servers are friendly.
if you can, bring your own char sui, because they're using spam now. Order lilikoi chiffon pie in advance. Wonderful place, wonderful saimin. Get the b-b-q sticks, too.
Love this video C! I have food dreams of the chiffon pie.
Even though I'm pretty full from the saimin, the pie is so 'lite' that you can enjoy a slice also.
This is our first stop after we get into the car when we land. Love it so much eat some there and take some home for breakfast the next morning!
We do the same as you. it's so close to the airport!
Nice video and story; i do remember the Kress store at the corner. Aloha
Oh wow! It's been gone for such a long time.
Mom and pop shops like this are the best. 😊

Thanks, the saimin is still good. They used to make their own noodles but now they purchase it.
