Anglesey Road Trip - North Wales Island packing a real punch

  • As part of my North Wales Road Trip, I spent one day away from Snowdonia National Park, doing a mini Anglesey road trip. In this video, I visit the Menai bridge which crosses the Menai Strait, I take a self guided walking tour around the free to enter Parys Mountain - or Parys Mine. I go for a rough and ready exploration of the coastal Porth Wen Brickworks, before a quick pit stop at the South Stack Lighthouse where a mixture of both the lighthouse and 1000's of seabirds were a feast for the senses. As the day was getting on, we headed to Goleudy Twr Mawr or Llanddwyn lighthouse on Llanddwyn Island accidentally timing it perfectly for golden hour. The day was ended with a quick photostop at the train station in 'Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch' for a photo under the well known sign!

    Hi port wen is privately opened,the owner is doing his best to stop people visiting that’s why access is difficult. Some people have been turned away recently so be aware you might not be able to get to it.

      Hi Keveen, thank you for this comment, its most helpful. I'm going to pin it to the top of the comments so others can see it and understand it's a place that you can no longer get to. Had I seen any signs to say it was private and and to keep out when I visited, I wouldn't have continued. It felt like they were well trodden footpaths - the guilt is starting to seep in now! 🤦‍♀️

      We had no idea this place existed despite having been to Anglesey many times so thanks for bringing it to our attention - we are staying in the area so we decided to take a look. At the time of writing this (May '24) there is a padlocked gate guarding the entrance although you can view part of the site from the coast path which passes by just above the gate. Below the gate the path was part stumble, part stream and quite steep and the ruins, although very interesting and full of character, are in a dangerous and unmanaged state so if you do decide to explore you do so very much at your own risk and I would say that this is one for adult adventurers rather than for a family excursion. There are high walls and deep holes for small people to fall off or into.

    You were asking about the car park nearest the beach at Llanddwyn. Only Newborough residents have a key, I lived there for for most of my life, until recent years and we had a pass and a key to park there. Glad you enjoyed Anglesey, love calling it my home.

      Oh... this comment has made my day! I was visiting my dad the other day and we watched this video together and he asked whether anyone had left a comment letting me know and had to say it was still a mystery! I think it's a fabulous idea... I was aware Newborough residents could visit for free (also great idea) but having a separate car park ensures us tourists don't prevent locals from being able to access it. You are so fortunate to have lived there for so long, I adored the island and am so grateful to a couple of Bangor uni students who we met up the Glyders for recommending it to us!!

      @@WhenAdventureKnox you’re very welcome or Croeso as we say in welsh. I live near Llanfair PG now but we can still get season tickets but I can’t enjoy the shorter walk from the residents car park. My family still live there, my mum and dad walk in the forest every day. Lucky to have called it my playground growing up, we used to cycle there and then go swimming and have a day there. Very fortunate. Glad I helped out with me comment!

    • @RobRait

      I was at Bangor University in the early 1970s. At that time, the car park by the beach was the only car park there, and it was free! The track through the woods was very rutted and bumpy. A group of us often used to go to Newborough Beach when we had a free afternoon to enjoy the then deserted beach and island.
      In the late 70s I took my girlfriend (now wife) there, and there was a coin-operated gate at the top of the track to the beach, but the beach-side car park was still there. The track to the beach was a little less rutted but still challenging to a low-slung car.
      Last time I was there, probably some 10+ years ago, the top car park was in operation, with the long trek to the beach the only way to get there. I'm now not as mobile as I used to be, so it's unlikely that I'll be able to get to the beach again, as the walk there and back may be too challenging for me. Thanks for the video, it really took me back!

    Lovely video, thank you. One of my favourite places. The church on the LLanddwyn peninsula is now a ruin, about halfway along it, and between the two main paths - its easily missed. The lighthouse on the end, is in fact just a lighthouse! It is also a nice walk down the beach the other way heading towards the mountains. When you reach the mouth of the Menai strait, you can return on the other side across the salt flats and through the forest. The beach is best enjoyed at low tide - it is enormous!

    I worked for Anglesey council (tourism department) and as others have said, Porth Wen is privately owned. The owner hates people trespassing the land and every year it’s getting worse and worse for people sneaking there… my advice is just to admire from a distance! Lovely video though!

    It's worth mentioning that Porth Wen is actually private property, and that the owner accepts no liability for any injuries sustained as a result of trespassing there. It used to be signposted as such, but the signs keep getting defaced, damaged or removed.
    Also, you can only access the lower car park if you're a permanent resident of Niwbwrch village - it's one of the few perks of having to put up with so much disruption during the summer months.

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Aerosoulzx, thank you for letting me know, I genuinely had no idea it was private land, I'm afraid any signs that once were there were gone or too defaced when I visited in May. Do you know if the owners have a similar stance to the owners of Parys Mountain in that we can go there, but do so at our own risk or should it not be entered at all? I would like to update the pinned comment for this video to reflect the situation so I'm not encouraging the wrong thing. The lower car park at the beach makes perfect sense for the locals... I'd hate to think that my tourism causes things that used to be free for locals to now cost so I really appreciate that set up!

I'm afraid you'll need to park in the main car park. Follow the narrow road to the bottom of the slight hill and you'll reach it. Hi Khatoon, I am very well thank you, I hope you are too. I didn't know Anglesey was the largest island in England and Wales until I visited it, but it makes sense as it's pretty big. Scotland however have some huge islands so not a surprise Scotland isn't included.

    I was hoping that you would have gone to the light house but perhaps videography is not permitted. Have good days! 2.24.24

    Holy moly that is a long word! We found this video of a news reporter saying it: th-cam.com/video/fHxO0UdpoxM/w-d-xo.html. We couldn’t attempt that either! What a beautiful area though!

      I LOVE that we have in essence just done the same thing. When we were planning this day (the night before) I too TH-cam'd the pronunciation. Contemplated spending the next hour trying to learn it so I could pull it off in the video the following day, then quickly decided against it (besides, I think this channel's 'thing' is quickly becoming 'Caroline can't pronounce words properly' 🤣) I also found this video: th-cam.com/video/b9DcTKtSES8/w-d-xo.html where a New Zealand weather reporter aces the NZ long place name and the producers try and get her to say the Welsh one! 🤣 Bless her. There's a tiny part of me that's hoping you guys are watching and commenting on these videos because a trip to Wales might be on the cards soon? *looks hopeful*

    Quick tip , don't play music when you are talking , otherwise great vlog 👍

      Hi Duncan, so pleased you enjoyed the vlog. This is a bit of an oldie and a few people have passed comments since posting this regarding the music and I've tried to have it significantly more quiet in the background when talking and the comments about it seem to have stopped since doing that. It's super helpful though to get comments like this, especially when it's obvious they're supportive and coming from a kind place.

      Hole Pepe. Sí, de hecho soy británico. Soy de Inglaterra. Nací y me crié en el noreste, cerca de la frontera escocesa, pero ahora vivo en Londres. Tienes razón en que hay algunas personas en otras áreas que quieren su independencia, especialmente en Escocia, ¡y su referéndum de hace unos años estuvo muy cerca! Me encantan las ovejas que tenemos en el Reino Unido, ¡y Gales tiene muchas! Me encanta que hayas encontrado este pequeño y viejo canal desde Perú. ¡Es un país en mi lista de deseos seguro!

      Probé el ceviche por primera vez hace un par de veranos y estaba delicioso, ¡aunque apuesto a que es mucho mejor en Perú!

    Like someone has already said Porth Wen is private property and should be edited out of the film and worked stopped there when the clay deposits were exhausted , the are on Mynydd Parys was mined out from the surface and the many miles of tunnels are still there , on Ynys Llanddwyn its a lighthouse and the most important part of the island is missing the church also the flying of a drone in the area is banned as its a highly sensitive nesting area and a National Nature reserve , you wont get access to the residents car park as its for locals only

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Philip. As soon as I learnt about Porth Wen being private property, I pinned the original posters comment to the top so others are aware. I try to abide by rules as best as I can and I honestly didn't see any signs or fences restricting access - had I done, I wouldn't have gone any further. It's the same with my drone flying. I have a special app that lets me know where I can and can't fly the drone. I'm aware of places which have restrictions at certain times of year for wildlife. For example when I was at Mealt Falls in Scotland, due to nesting birds, I wasn't allowed to fly it until August 1st, but I was there on something like July 27th. I still didn't fly it despite being days out. I I didn't see any signs banning drones and my app didn't prevent flight either. It may be that the rules have come into place since I was there, or maybe it was the time of year I visited?

    Cringed at your pronunciation of the Welsh place names. 😵‍💫 However you got Porth Wen correct 👏

      Oh dear, I worry that the thing this channel may become known for is my butchering of the pronunciation of any place names. I'll take the Porth Wen as a win. I bet when you got to the end at Llanfairpwllgwyngyll and I said I wasn't going to attempt to pronounce it, you were probably sat there thinking 'thank goodness for that!' 🤦‍♀️🤣
