Guam is Bracing for a Massive American Military Intrusion (2008)

  • As North Korea threatens to launch a nuclear strike against America's air base in Guam, we revisit this SBS Australia report from 2008 about America's military presence on the island. Subscribe to Journeyman here: th-cam.com/users/subscription_c...
    Guam is a political anomaly: A US territory where citizens do not have US voting-rights and where island politics are controlled by Washington. The indigenous population, the Chamarro, live in poverty and preserving their traditional way of life is a struggle. "We are certainly on the endangered species list", says Chamorro leader Debbie Quintana. Now the US plans to make Guam the lynchpin of its military strategy in the western Pacific, and the mood in Guam is of anger and disbelief. "We are a strategic location, a possession, a bounty of war", Quinata says. "And if we don't like it, tough".

    Being from Guam the biggest change from the military build-up on Guam, so far, is the drinking age increasing from 18 to 21. Oh, we got a Chilli's and other mainland American restaurant now as well.

      frobi6852 Nope. No Walmarts here. There is a Popeye though. But it's in the military base. But if Un does launch his missiles at this place I call home, just watch NK get assraped by the world. Downside - this shit will be like Fallout. We'll have radiation poisoning, disfigured, and near billions will be destroyed.
      And I love it here! It's a beautiful place I call home. Oh well. At least America will have an excuse to go back to war. Or just send its nukes all to NK.

    I lived on Guam for 3 years while in the Navy! Without the US Guam would be a Japanese island and in worse shape! I do feel for the people of Guam and I love many of them but this will bring more money and resources to the island! I do think the US needs to spend more money and time helping the Chamorros in a lot of ways!!! God bless you all in Guam 🇬🇺

    2019 update . The Military build up is on the way in NCS Dededo for the marines. More affordable housing units were built or expanded after this documentary. During the making of this documentary 4 schools were being built and opened in SY-2008-2009 & 2009-2010 Adacao elem , Liguan Terrace elem, Okkodo high school , Astumbo. middle school. Enrollment at schools have shot up in the past 10 years due to new housing & affordable housing. In the last 10 years their was 3 redistricting plans to ease overcrowding at schools. Due to the increase of students they expanded okkodo in 2014 to accommodate more students since the school was over capacity since the opening. Another school was made from converting former barracks the military used in the 1960's into a high school ( Tiyan high ) which opened on 2014.

    It's time to add 2 new states to the union! Add Puerto Rico as the first new state and then pool all the Pacific Island territories together under a new single state called Pacifica!

    • @MST3Killa
      @MST3Killa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'd take the Pacific territories over Puerto Rico. PR is horribly corrupt and in debt. Until they can sort out their corruption problem (first on my list) and then tackle their debt problems (second on my list) then they won't be admitted into the Union.

    • @killwize
      @killwize 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think America has an obligation to make Puerto Rico a state... after a 100 years of citizenship, military participation, and representative-less federal control, It should just happen! Times up congress, statehood or let the territory go. Having territory with such a large population is anti-American. PUERTO RICANS HAVE EARNED STATEHOOD, THEY HAVE PAID THEIR PRICE IN BLOOD.
      Perhaps It's time for a new executive order?

      killwize interesting, the US owns 19 trillion dollars in debt but its PRs 72 billion dollar debt the problem. By the way we are working on that. Oh! PR has better infrastructure and more modern than the territories in the Pacific. If you look at the video, PR looks al like in many ways. Oh, one more thing, PROMESA, pass by Congress says that the economic problem in the island, can not forbid the island to becoming a state.

    I'm from Guam, lived here all my life, then when I grew of age I joined the military, let me tell you something. This is such an anti American video. Majority of the inhabitants here are more than happy and greatful to have the US here on our island. We feel safe, and they have given us so many opportunities to better ourselves and our lives. You can interview the few people who complain and say it's the opinion of all of us and that we're ungrateful! Did you know the Guam has one of the highest military service rates per capita in all the US? We also have an entire day and parade to celebrate the US liberating us from Japanese tyranny in WW2. But it's whatever, thanks for making us look ungrateful I guess

I mean the people of Guam have no voting rights on the main land, possibly no representation..But US on the other hand, increases and decreases its military presence there at will. The base there has already taken up 33% of the Island's area, with provision for more grabs if needed...

    I find it funny that in your video description you are using quotes from a nearly decade old video and trying to apply them to the current political situation. We hear some vehement points of view from 3 or 4 people in this video which are being portrayed in such a way as to cast the US in an oppressive usurpatious light. Seems more of an attempted hit piece than a documentary report. You want me to take this seriously let's hear from more than 5 people, those for and against.
    Many people in the continental U.S. also live beneath the poverty line as well as many throughout the world. Are you trying to say that is the fault of the US presence? If we were to leave the quality of life and available resources to everyone would shoot up? Ask Venezuela how much worse off things can get; at least Guam doesn't have to worry about being taken over by a dictator, the US presence affords massive protection, and in the event of crisis they would receive aid as a territory, the population wouldn't be eating out of trashcans like Caracas is.
    And if you're going to make claims in your description to try and tie the sentiments expressed in this nearly decade old video to today's military situation then kindly provide some updated/followup viewpoints and situation updates to back up those claims. Otherwise, take your Evil America "expose" and shove it under Fake News Pending Confirmation. (which isn't accomplished with 5 opinions)

      %%%%%%% %%%%%%% As someone from the on the US territories, let me tell you something. Those lands were acquired for military purposes in s time where the US felt it can control the world. You did this on your will and now you must accept the consequences of your actions. You have a responsibilities with this lands and you have to make sure they are top notch. If the US territories are poor its not because they wanted to, its because the US forced them to be poor by the laws it has passed. Read about the territorial clause in the constitution and how Congress treats the territories and youll see why.

    People have a short memory....sixty years ago the Japanese ruled Guam with an iron fist. The U.S. ejected the Japanese and the Chamoros we're quite happy about it. Like other small islands they could be living in poverty had not the U.S. come to the island. Biting the hand that feeds you is not a good idea.

    Typical American forgets the poor and its inhabitants but when it needs to go there it gets in there and muscles its way in there
    To protect its inhabitants only until something like this comes up classic
