Clark and Lana in the comics have no relationship beyond high school, and attempting to keep Lana involved in the story beyond season 4 compromised the series because Lana simply didn't fit into Clark's post-high school storyline like Chloe and Lois did, and there was little for her to do other than be the girl Clark pines for. 5x12 was the episode that had the potential to take Smallville to new territory and reinvent the status quo a little bit. I didn't like the use of time-travel to reverse everything, but I did like that there was still consequences by having Jonathan die instead. I would have either went with Lana dying from the car crash or changing the time-travel to just Clark saving Lana from the crash, but never taking away the moment when he revealed the truth to her. That way, no matter which version it was, there was a change that mattered. Yeah, Jonathan dying did affect a lot, but his death didn't really change a whole lot. Lana knowing the truth would have changed so much, even improve the relationship between her and Clark, while still having the impact of Jonathan dying. And if Lana's death was kept, then Lex knowing the truth would open the door to so much more to come later. While I'm at it, the show should have made Clark and Lana the endgame of the series. I know that the actress wanted to leave later but both Clark and Lana have far better chemistry and it would have been made sense to do so. Clark and Lois in this show always felt forced, and I never bought the relationship between them.
@@brisk2.0brisk7 It wasn't really Lana leaving that ruined the show for me, it was when Michael Rosenbaum and the showrunners left after Season 7. Have to completely disagree. The chemistry, banter and back and fourths between Welling and Durance was off the charts. Smallvilles Clark needs a no nonsense strong woman like Erica's Lois; that relationship would also be pivotal to both further shape the man he is to become and for her to give him fortitude during his most challenging and darkest times as Superman. As brilliant as Lana was for accepting his secret, I don't think her character would have been strong enough to live a life with Superman and the responsibility he has.
