It's a very clever end to a relationship that we all knew didn't last. Think about it, how can you possibly make an emotional ending to a love story that everyone knows ends with them being apart. The writer used superman's Achilles's hill as the impetus for delivering the ending. For me personally, I respect the level of clarity that this ending provided in regard to the pain of leaving your first love. Our first love will always be with us, in hour hearts, no matter what.
I wouldn't know about "clever"... they had an army of Kryptonians in the following season that could have been stopped by her, but they never addressed why she wasn't there. If they couldn't get the actress back, they could have had at least an in-universe explanation.
That last sentence is definitely true. When your soul is connected to someone else, and then that bond is broken, there's no pain on Earth like it...and even years later, it can stay with you.

But again, this is how it goes in the comics and in real life, so I wouldn't say it was wasted. It literally is how the relationship began, ran, and ended in the original stories.
Based on chemistry, Tom Welling & Kristin Kreuk were the best Clark Kent & Lana Lang. No-one has matched their performance since and I doubt nobody ever will. If you ever needed to define the perfect, unequivocal, pair of actors to realistically portray Clark & Lana, you don't need to look any further than Tom & Kristin. They had IT!
even though I am a HUGE Clark and Lois, I really did like Clark and Lana, and their love story. Even I have to say, this is definitely one of the most memorable and saddest moments in Smallville.. It's so sad and the music and just the acting, the dialogue, when Lana refers back to the very first time they have a real onversation in the pilot episode and the music is all slow, and then she turns around in slow motion walking away and then Clark just say I love you in a hopless sort of way and just falls to the ground, like he's so beat... I just can't, all of it is prefect it makes me cry everytime

She should have left, clark start dating Lois, they break up, and he flies around the earth reversing time and stopping Lana from absorbing kryptonite, then he returns to the future were they're married. When I watched this episode I literally teared up. After watching them for all the seasons, grow and go through things. Seeing the ending was like watching two former flames go through a major break up when you rooted for them all along. It’s just seeing them is like going through the experience of when you really love someone and trying to make something work so hard and you know you’ve tried everything. You wanted to keep them in your life, but realizing you can’t.

Lana had Clark’s heart from day one. Had she not become the human embodiment of his weakness, he would never have chosen anyone over her. The only reason he ended up with Lois is cause comic canon says he must. And it took the choice being out of both their hands to truly end them.
Comic canon makes Lana exist so what’s even the point? They tried to keep most things canon since the beginning and don’t forget Chloe was supposed to turn into Lois so they knew Lana and Clark weren’t end game since forever. People talk about Smallville like the writers just appeared magically on S8 to change everything between them when they hinted Clark-Lois canon since S4. Did they broke then up the best way? No, everyone agrees with that but also everyone had 4 years to understand where they were going.

Ya know even with everybody that complains about the "Lana drama" that Smallville had as a show I'm not gonna lie their love story still brings me to tears everytime I watch this scene as well as the breakup video scene she sent Clark in season 7. I just think it's so heartbreaking and emotional how the Clark/Lana love story ended.

Loved Clark and Lana together. Didn't watch Smallville after this. Was so bored with yet another Clark and Lois show. Something different would have been better as this dynamic peaked my interest. Always said they should have had a normal relationship rather than writers flip-flopping to keep viewers interested. They could then have made another show and called it Metropolis and had Lois and Clark again. But as Tom Welling himself said the ending here denoted hope for the future. And that maybe someday they would meet. So hopefully they aren't afraid to change the old narrative of Clark and Lois as earlier comics did have himself with other live interests. They should really look at changing the direction. More interesting.
i always stop watching smallville after this episode because for me, this is where the show ended. I could never stand lois and clark. Lana is his true love. Smallville also went down hill from here. Best episode after was homecoming. So usually after this episode I might watch homecoming and the series ends for me. He could have just used Blue Kryptonight. But they had to right her off the show because she decided to do something else.

Based on all the events in Smallville, yet Lana and Clark kept finding themselves back in each other's arms (true love): only something as cruel as a kryptonite body or as heart-piercing as Lana's ultimate death could introduce and validate the Lois and Clark love story. I would love to see Kryptonite Lana and Superman in a DC Movie. Pity she wasn't around to eliminate Doomsday.
From the first episode, we grew up watching Smallville by seeing Clark and Lana go through so much with us hoping that they will eventually end up together one day but when we get to this moment knowing deep down that they can't, it really hurts so much. Tom Welling and Kristen Kruek totally knocked this one out of the park and both delivered a powerful performance. After rewatching this again, its got me all choked up because it's like being forced to say goodbye to a big part of your life but you're not ready to but you don't have a choice. This is proof that sometimes in life there isn't always a happy ending 😢

Even some “Clois,” fans were rooting for this couple. I wondered if Clark could have used blue kryptonite on Lana or Gold? Clark really did love her and she loved him. Although these 2 made their fair share of mistakes to one another they always found a way to get past it. Lana will always be his first love. Yes he found happiness with Lois but these 2 had amazing moments for 8 glorious seasons. 🙏🙏 Maybe in some alternate universe they can be together.
The same problem is in Buffy :) Angel or Spike ? Angel , first love, but when he is happy , lose his soul... that is true love.. Spike? my fav.. fits to Buffy more, but that love is.. hm. never mind. The same heartbreaking moments..

Say what you want about Clark & Lois, and there is obviously a LOT of Superman cannon between the comics and the movies, but at least in Smallville....Clark didn't **choose** Lois. This scene is so emotional and it hurts every time I see it. I love Lois and Clark but dang that first true love is a killer. Not trying to ruin this but if anyone has seen the cw arrowverse crisis they bring tom welling back and Eric durance and when the other lex shows him kryptonite he shrugs it off and throws it to the side bc he says he gave up his powers. I have been watching this show for the first time these past 3 months. I bought the Blu-ray set. I’m up to this episode and watched it last night. This has been such a ride and have enjoyed every minute of it. So much has happened so far, but this scene and when Chloe finds out about his secret are the ones that stand out for me as of now. I’m anxious to see how it all ends, but getting sad at the same time. This has been such a fantastic experience!
I just re-watched season 8 and before, I didn't think that Lana should've come back for five episodes, as it dredged up what felt like tiring melodrama after season 7 had strongly finished the relationship. However, I had forgotten that it was Tess who forced Lana to make the goodbye speech, and the behind the scenes events led to what takes place in season 8. Considering how madly in love Clark and Lana are, it makes complete sense that they'd want to be with each other no matter what. Therefore, I think this is a great ending for them. Not only that, but I love Lana showing Tess how ruthless and impersonal Lex is with everyone, through her own experience with him, by showing her how Lex used her as his eyes and ears via virtual, optic nerve spyware. It provided engaging character development for Tess, while also tying into Lana's story very well. It also feels very fitting that Lana would be at Chloe's wedding, since they're best friends. I just wish the show made it clear that when Clark did get together with Lois, she isn't his consolation prize - Not that Lois is his first choice either mind you. It definitely could've gone either way, Clark just happened to end up with Lois via circumstance. I think this is implied by the show but it's never been made concrete, and the never-ceasing, intense longing Clark had for Lana always came off to me as him undoubtedly loving her more than anyone. Now, Lois and Clark had a playful friends relationship that seemed healthier than all the strong love coupled with emotional turmoil and pain of Clark and Lana, though that relationship really seemed to be plagued by bad luck far more than anything else when zeroing in on any issues. There is something preciously uncomplicated and fun about the Lois and Clark relationship, through the friendly, playful banter and breeziness. Both relationships are nicely different and strong in their own way.
Agreed I think there relationship should have Ended in Season 5 so the show uses the rest of the seasons to develop Lois and Clark and but instead they continued this relationship and I was okay with it for the most part but If your not gonna end it in Season 5 at least End it back in Season 7 cause it wasn’t worth her coming back in 8 and messing up what Clark and Lois were developing I just don’t think Lana and Clark should have dated for a majority of the series I think it should have been equal cause Lois only dated Clark for S9 and S10 and she deserved better than that
I watch the pilot episode back in 2001 in the 5 grade to me right here this was the best relationship of the show and if I would have been the writers I would have found some type of way to tie her back into superboy making her his mother and Clark the father I'm 32 now and it still hits me when I watch this scene
I wonder what it's like for Lois knowing that the only reason she and Clark got together was because it's physically impossible for him to be with Lana, whom I guessing he never stopped loving at some level. And not only that, but she's still around and it might someday be possible for them to be together. I know, they're both deeply in love etc, I'm talking from just a person's emotional rather than logical point of view.
I haven't read the smallville season 11 comics but apparently Lana now lives in Africa and is their superhero. Lois meets her and Lana givers her her blessing when Lois tells her that she married Clark. Still this scene and the one where Clark sees Lana's tape while Lois comforts him were the scenes that got me crying the most.... man I miss this show so much. Superman and Lois is fine.. but nothing is great about it as it doesn't live up to Smallville in any way aside from the movie quality effects.
This scene reminds me a lot of my ex-girlfriend. After several years of trying to make things work (and deeply hurting each other in the process), it all ended in 2006. But even now, 18 years later, I still love and miss her so much. She's moved on, and has her own kid now. As for me, I'm 43 and single, which sucks...but I think that's part of the consequences when you make a lot of wrong choices.
Technically speaking, since Lana absorbed kryptonite radiation she could go to the fortress of solitude and have it neutralized. There is Kryptonian tech that was designed to neutralize all kinds of kryptonite radiation. The writers just realized they wrote themselves into a corner because adult Clark loved Lois.
I hated this moment so much when I watched this show and Im a Superman fan, lore and all. The hero can never truly have it all even if Superman did get a somewhat happy ending with Lois. I hope there is a parallel universe where he and Lana did have a life together and he could still be a hero...

I think that's worse than death, both being alive but not able to be together. Being in pain cuz you can't be with the one you love. Having to distance yourself from the one you love is worse than death. With death is terrible but at least most the time you two wanted to be together and something awful happened. If I was in this situation it would feel like torture.

Ya know even with everybody that complains about the "Lana drama" that Smallville had as a show I'm not gonna lie their love story still brings me to tears everytime I watch this scene as well as the breakup video scene she sent Clark in season 7. I just think it's so heartbreaking and emotional how the Clark/Lana love story ended.

Loved Clark and Lana together. Didn't watch Smallville after this. Was so bored with yet another Clark and Lois show. Something different would have been better as this dynamic peaked my interest. Always said they should have had a normal relationship rather than writers flip-flopping to keep viewers interested. They could then have made another show and called it Metropolis and had Lois and Clark again. But as Tom Welling himself said the ending here denoted hope for the future. And that maybe someday they would meet. So hopefully they aren't afraid to change the old narrative of Clark and Lois as earlier comics did have himself with other live interests. They should really look at changing the direction. More interesting.

i always stop watching smallville after this episode because for me, this is where the show ended. I could never stand lois and clark. Lana is his true love. Smallville also went down hill from here. Best episode after was homecoming. So usually after this episode I might watch homecoming and the series ends for me. He could have just used Blue Kryptonight. But they had to right her off the show because she decided to do something else.

From the first episode, we grew up watching Smallville by seeing Clark and Lana go through so much with us hoping that they will eventually end up together one day but when we get to this moment knowing deep down that they can't, it really hurts so much. Tom Welling and Kristen Kruek totally knocked this one out of the park and both delivered a powerful performance. After rewatching this again, its got me all choked up because it's like being forced to say goodbye to a big part of your life but you're not ready to but you don't have a choice. This is proof that sometimes in life there isn't always a happy ending 😢

Even some “Clois,” fans were rooting for this couple. I wondered if Clark could have used blue kryptonite on Lana or Gold? Clark really did love her and she loved him. Although these 2 made their fair share of mistakes to one another they always found a way to get past it. Lana will always be his first love. Yes he found happiness with Lois but these 2 had amazing moments for 8 glorious seasons. 🙏🙏 Maybe in some alternate universe they can be together.
The same problem is in Buffy :) Angel or Spike ? Angel , first love, but when he is happy , lose his soul... that is true love.. Spike? my fav.. fits to Buffy more, but that love is.. hm. never mind. The same heartbreaking moments..

I have been watching this show for the first time these past 3 months. I bought the Blu-ray set. I’m up to this episode and watched it last night. This has been such a ride and have enjoyed every minute of it. So much has happened so far, but this scene and when Chloe finds out about his secret are the ones that stand out for me as of now. I’m anxious to see how it all ends, but getting sad at the same time. This has been such a fantastic experience!

I just re-watched season 8 and before, I didn't think that Lana should've come back for five episodes, as it dredged up what felt like tiring melodrama after season 7 had strongly finished the relationship. However, I had forgotten that it was Tess who forced Lana to make the goodbye speech, and the behind the scenes events led to what takes place in season 8. Considering how madly in love Clark and Lana are, it makes complete sense that they'd want to be with each other no matter what. Therefore, I think this is a great ending for them. Not only that, but I love Lana showing Tess how ruthless and impersonal Lex is with everyone, through her own experience with him, by showing her how Lex used her as his eyes and ears via virtual, optic nerve spyware. It provided engaging character development for Tess, while also tying into Lana's story very well. It also feels very fitting that Lana would be at Chloe's wedding, since they're best friends.
I just wish the show made it clear that when Clark did get together with Lois, she isn't his consolation prize - Not that Lois is his first choice either mind you. It definitely could've gone either way, Clark just happened to end up with Lois via circumstance. I think this is implied by the show but it's never been made concrete, and the never-ceasing, intense longing Clark had for Lana always came off to me as him undoubtedly loving her more than anyone. Now, Lois and Clark had a playful friends relationship that seemed healthier than all the strong love coupled with emotional turmoil and pain of Clark and Lana, though that relationship really seemed to be plagued by bad luck far more than anything else when zeroing in on any issues. There is something preciously uncomplicated and fun about the Lois and Clark relationship, through the friendly, playful banter and breeziness. Both relationships are nicely different and strong in their own way.
Agreed I think there relationship should have Ended in Season 5 so the show uses the rest of the seasons to develop Lois and Clark and but instead they continued this relationship and I was okay with it for the most part but If your not gonna end it in Season 5 at least End it back in Season 7 cause it wasn’t worth her coming back in 8 and messing up what Clark and Lois were developing
I just don’t think Lana and Clark should have dated for a majority of the series I think it should have been equal cause Lois only dated Clark for S9 and S10 and she deserved better than that
I watch the pilot episode back in 2001 in the 5 grade to me right here this was the best relationship of the show and if I would have been the writers I would have found some type of way to tie her back into superboy making her his mother and Clark the father I'm 32 now and it still hits me when I watch this scene
I wonder what it's like for Lois knowing that the only reason she and Clark got together was because it's physically impossible for him to be with Lana, whom I guessing he never stopped loving at some level. And not only that, but she's still around and it might someday be possible for them to be together. I know, they're both deeply in love etc, I'm talking from just a person's emotional rather than logical point of view.

I haven't read the smallville season 11 comics but apparently Lana now lives in Africa and is their superhero. Lois meets her and Lana givers her her blessing when Lois tells her that she married Clark. Still this scene and the one where Clark sees Lana's tape while Lois comforts him were the scenes that got me crying the most.... man I miss this show so much. Superman and Lois is fine.. but nothing is great about it as it doesn't live up to Smallville in any way aside from the movie quality effects.

This scene reminds me a lot of my ex-girlfriend. After several years of trying to make things work (and deeply hurting each other in the process), it all ended in 2006. But even now, 18 years later, I still love and miss her so much. She's moved on, and has her own kid now. As for me, I'm 43 and single, which sucks...but I think that's part of the consequences when you make a lot of wrong choices.
Technically speaking, since Lana absorbed kryptonite radiation she could go to the fortress of solitude and have it neutralized. There is Kryptonian tech that was designed to neutralize all kinds of kryptonite radiation.

Personally, I wish their relationship had ended around season 5, but this was a very creative and emotional ending.
I hated this moment so much when I watched this show and Im a Superman fan, lore and all. The hero can never truly have it all even if Superman did get a somewhat happy ending with Lois. I hope there is a parallel universe where he and Lana did have a life together and he could still be a hero...

I think that's worse than death, both being alive but not able to be together. Being in pain cuz you can't be with the one you love. Having to distance yourself from the one you love is worse than death. With death is terrible but at least most the time you two wanted to be together and something awful happened. If I was in this situation it would feel like torture.
