Man I’ve been looking at how to make this installation for the past couple of weeks and now you post this right on time. Everything I have done to my VStar has been done by watching your vids. You’re the best at making these detailed how to videos.
All I want to do is install a tach on my 2009 vstar 650 but after searching for a tach including a Drag Specialties like you installed there is so much conflicting info about dual fire, single fire, adapters, modules and spark pickups. Your install is simple and you made no mention of an adapter required for a "metric" bike yet most vendors say one is required. My thinking is that most tachs are for old school Harleys thus some type of module or adapter is needed. Can you please help?
Hey mate.used your vids for alot of things I've done to my star.i had a rpm gauge like yours was no prob connecting to neg pole of coil, but I bought a greedy rpm gauge but when connected to green or even orange pole on either side of coil cuts off ignition.ive tried connecting it to speed sensor where fuel pump is, tried all 3 wires and nothing.even tried all wires from ecu only 1 kinda works a thin grey wire but not accurate at all not smooth and too much rpm to what it should be.has settings for 1,2,3,4,5,6,8 cyl. Only kinda works on 5.can you give me any help please.thanks
My tach has 2 wires for the light, and the 3 wires for the tach one is for an ignition lock(power) the second is for a ground. The third goes to the coil. I hooked them all up but my tach is real slow in the rpm climbing. Which wire should I have gone into on the coil there is one that is orange and red and another that is red with another color I can’t remember off the top of my head. The directions said it should go to a engine signal.
Hello, I purchased this same unit and watched the video multiple times to make sure I was ready. When I made the last connection with the green wire, I reconnected the battery and turned the key. The tach lit up and the needle moved all the way over to the right and then back to the left (my F150 does this) so I thought I was good. Later after reassembling, I started the bike and the tach remained at 0 (didn't work). I followed all of my wiring, watched the video multiple times, but I am at a loss. UPDATE: In the video at 8:36-38, you follow the wire and wiggle the positive connection. I assumed that was the negative and made my connection there. You may want to let folks know that if they use that particular coil, the negative is the gray wire and not the red/black. Thanks for the videos.
On the newer ones, when power is applied it does a test with the needle going all the way up and back down. If it doesn't work after that its not getting signal.
Hi! Amazing video. I saw your Vstar has stainless steel tubing running along the left side of the motorcycle. What might that piping be for? I ask because I am looking to replace the rigid aluminum air induction piping from the cylinders with a flexible stainless steel tubing.
Great video. Instructions state the green wire goes to the negative of the coil. Is that what you did? Looked like you went to the positive (red) wire.
Good afternoon! Installed a tachometr on kawasaki vn 900. The tachometr inderstates the speed by 2 times. What could be the reason? I am grateful for the answer.
Hi, Still super interested in your computer setup. What are you doing with it and how. When I am doing something on V-Star 1100 looking only on your videos - quality as official documentation :)
@@retrotechandelectronics My VSTAR 650 carb surges with the choke closed. What could it be? I cleaned the carb, replaced the spark plugs, replaced the throttle cables and grips. The throttle grip was not springing back before replacing the throttle cables. It springs back now.
On my vstar 1100 I have the black plastic cover that wraps around the ignition as there is a left & right side. I am wanting to get this cover in chrome, could you please let me know where you got your cover as I noticed you have a chrome one. Thank you
@@peterpiekarski4910 I didn't say it wouldn't work, or cause you an issue. But a tachometer is an accessory not an ignition, as such I wired it to the lights, and only its signal to the ignition. I don't need my ignition to fail if my tachometer should have an internal fault for any reason.

Glad I could help
It's the same for vstar 650? Or can you make a separate video with the process on the vstar 650?
Its similar, I could make a separate video next time I have the 650 apart.
@@retrotechandelectronics Aaaaand, thank you for all videos that you post.
@@laurentiubancila7675 Youre welcome.
@@retrotechandelectronics that would be awesome! I want to do this on my 2013 650

@@retrotechandelectronics So the signal is the grey wire, or the red/black wire on the coil?

Im not quite sure what part you mention specifically, perhaps you can mention a timestamp as a reference?

I have same question.

I don’t know, does it have a setting, or did you buy one for a 4 cyl bike?
@@retrotechandelectronics Is it dual fire or single fire ignition?
Does it work alright and not cheap and nasty
Worked great for years…
Still wait the video with tachometer for vstar 650. :(
I have a tachometer video, have you not seen it?
@@retrotechandelectronics for the vstar 650?
3:48 on my 650 they are 10mm bolt. i imagine the 1100 is the same
Would that work on 2007 model too?
Yes
Does it matter which coil it connects to?
I does not.

The O2 computer video has been completed and a release is being scheduled
Do you have a link for the tachometer install for the vstar 650?
No, I should make one.

googling 'v star 1100 chrome covers' brought them right up
Awesome video is that all you need is the gauge?
The gauge came with everything needed.
Oh! Good idea I never thought of that...
Modifications:
1. Must not impede safety
2. Must not impede reliability
3. Everything else
Thanks for sharing your movie
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video !!
Thanks!
Thank you Sir - excellent video, very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
You could of just connected all the wires to the coil
Yes I very well could have wired the power and light for a gauge to an ignition coil. Doesn't mean I should.
@@retrotechandelectronics why's that? Been running mine 7 yrs no problem

Ànother great video full of tasty knowledge thanks dude keepnet rolling 🤟
Thanks! Will do!
Kids these days want their tachometers to have Bluetooth so they can see their engine speed on their phones, which to me is just insane lol.
They should watch the road…
Cobra tach installation is much easier, faster and looks cleaner than this piece of work.
meh...
