  • These phone settings have helped me so much when trying to reduce the amount of time I spend on my phone. I recently went from around 2 hours and 30 minutes a day to around 35 minutes a day because of these changes. I hope you find them helpful.

    Some advice:
    Nothing you do can solve your phone addiction unless you identify the reason you use these apps in the first place. It's probably a good reason, so that reason will inevitably drive you to go back on the changes you've made. For example: I used to autopilot to TH-cam whenever I wasn't hitting a certain stimulus threshold. When I got rid of TH-cam, I became more miserable and reinstalled it. That's because without yt, I was still antsy and bored, the only difference being that now I have nothing to fix my boredom. Then, when I picked up photography, my life kind of slowed down and I became invested in low stimulus activities like staring at trees. This eliminated my main cause for going on yt and thus made me use it less. So make sure that when you're making these sorts of changes, it addresses the reason why you do what you do in the first place. Don't beat around the bush, first look for the bush and then give it one big whack in its weak spot. That's how you make permanent progress instead of temporary progress 👍🏾

    One thing to remember guys is that not all screen time is bad! I love to read on my phone because I have access to more books or i love following along to yoga/workout vids! I'm also one that just loves having something to listen to so ill play youtube vids like its podcast a while I cook or clean. Or maybe i'm calling friends and loved ones, or maybe I'm just watching my favorite show. Your phone is a tool, so maybe it's not the phone or screen time thats a problem, its how you use it. My biggest advice would just be being conscientious of what your doing on your phone!

      This is great! So many people say "phones are uselss" or "phones are horrible" yes,people stay on thier phone for too long and it can damage our brains, but people are forgetting that a phone has a serious great purpose for us as well, just like what you said, being able to communicate with your family and friends,learning healthy steps to life,watching exercise and productivity,music that reliefs stress and enhances happiness,information world wide and about health conditions and symptoms and watxhing shows and movies that also reliefs stress and enhances happiness and also has a few messages to us, so just like what you said, if you spend an enormous time on your phone but it's mostly these instead of useless social media, then you shouldn't worry too much about reducing your screen time :)

    I scare myself sometimes, by being like this...

    • @chase3234

      I've been there before, what helped me was transitioning out of using my phone all the time. You can't just expect to break your attiction over night so I would try getting rid of apps that you can mindlessly scroll on but leaving some that give you something to do! Like for me I love reading on my libby app because it felt like scrolling for me. This than helped me with my focus and got me reading real books quickly! If you dont like reading find something else that's productive and peaks your interest (maybe like duolingo or something like that). Another tip I would say is figure out what you get out of scrolling for me I really like just having something to listen to, so instead I listen to music and play podcast's. Just really try and be conscientious of why you're on your phone when you are. You got this and I hope you find something that works for you ❤️

    • @AdamE0325
      @AdamE0325 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      it’ll take time to break an addiction, what’s helped me so far (i’m only on day 2😬) is to turn off all notifications from apps that i use often (snapchat, tiktok, instagram etc), and use a feature from the iphone settings app called app limits, and i’ve set it to 1,5 hours (it’s a lot now but slowly i’ll try and decrease it). when i get an urge to use my phone i try my best to do something else instead, and not give in to the feeling that i “need” to check what’s happening on the app.
      i also find myself mindlessly looking at my phone and not doing anything on it🥲🥲
      another thing that’s helping me is finding new hobbies to do instead of using my phone, hobbies like crocheting, drawing, making bracelets, reading etc.
      i’m not sure if this is helpful or if it’s just rambling for you😅but i wish u luck, we can do this

      @GimmeACiggyYaGronk 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      You need to have these screen time management techniques but ALSO need to have phone replacements activities.
      Workouts/exercise, study, career development, socialisation, life/to-do planning time.
      Every time you open your phone for no good reason do 10-15 pushups and 20 sit ups.
      Instead of spend an hour on phone, grab some pen and paper and spend an hour or so writing up a routine to replace phone use.
      Addictions get to us the most when we are bored and/or have nothing better to do (or we do have better things to do, but haven’t planned doing them).

      @@GimmeACiggyYaGronk truth is I am a student in her last year of highschool with finals approaching faster than ever. I have tons of things to do and my phone is actually keeping me from doing those. I maybe used to go on my phone because of boredom 5 years ago, but now it's a pure addiction and it trully feels like a disease. Trust me I try everyday to do other things and I have so many hobbies that I enjoy but that I stopped doing because of that addiction. Basically it seems like you're suggesting solutions to the problem that the problem keeps me from doing... so it's gonna be difficult to get out of that cycle 😅 I already have plenty of screen time limits and timers on every app but I always end up adding time because the timer closes the app while I was in the middle of a task that I considered I could not give up on (for instance, replying to someone on instagram, I could never leave someone on read even tho there is a 'good' reason behind it). I'll try harder to stop using my phone tho. Maybe reading and studying can help. I think that I might reach my screen time goal today by the way (I have set my goal to 3 hours max)

    Since it’s not the first time TH-cam recommended me these type of videos, I wanted to say it once for all: THESE VIDEOS ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE. Let me explain. So if you use your phone just for texting to people you don’t want to know and for, as this guy says, “scrolling” through TH-cam Shorts and TikTok trying to find something funny that lets estrange you from reality, then yes, this video is for you. But if these hours on the screen have an actual purpose, like finding a new friend to chat with through a social media that lets you do that (like telegram, messenger, etc.) and exploring internet (and TH-cam) content about your passions, than this is good for you and I know this because I found the meaning of my life with the combination of these two things. Think about that and don’t make arbitrary decisions just because everyone tells you to choose them.

    • @2u29wjiowk2iswj

      I agree partially. I mean learning Spanish and other languages via TH-cam, Language Transfer, and Pimsleur seems like a productive use of my time. Watching unnecessary stuff and things solely to keep you entertained is not. People now are weaker than ever and more useless than ever. We consume and consume and consume. Think about it. People back then did things that benefitted themselves and society (ik not like you have ever heard about that before haha (sarcastic)). And you shouldn't use so much apps to gain social connection because that is more of a disconnection than anything.

      I’m not saying social medias are better, I’m saying that we are neither evolving or downgrading. The men cannot live without being addicted to something.

An advice for some struggling with this is to identify the type of media you are consuming from each app. For example Tiktok fries my dopamine receptors by constantly giving me different stuff to view every second, however whenever I use TH-cam I watch long videos that doesn't fry my dopamine receptors at all, and I find that type of media to be useful, at least for me. @@atem8101 You're right, for many people this will be a great addition.
      Just for paranoid people and ones who have to take security very seriously, that's something to keep in mind.
      Sometimes while scrolling through comments on TH-cam, I've almost clicked on bot links in the past on accident, but the blue color of the links has helped me know, where not to place my finger, and it let's me identify them quickly.
      On TH-cam, links aren't underlined.
      Also on some e-mail apps, links aren't underlined, even though just clicking on a link in an e-mail can be dangerous.
      Not even WhatsApp has underlined links.
      (I'm using Android)
      And if you're just starting to go the "less-phone-usage" route, then you may still end up with several hours of phone usage per week and still watch some TH-cam.
      Some people are basically required to regularly use WhatsApp and e-mail, due to their jobs.
      When using a mouse, you consciously have to press down the button to click on a link, but with a smartphone, this can easily happen on accident.
      But again, it's just something to keep in mind. For most people, the grayscale color filter is a great option!
      But some people might want to consider leaving that one out.
      I've had enough people get hacked and sending me links to malware, that I'd rather choose safety first.

    • @Racecar564
      @Racecar564 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@222pream You are absolutely right about that - however, it's also possible to take the same phone you've already got, and remove everything from it that makes it addicting. The real bottom line here is highlighting that like anything else, a phone is a tool that you can use in a good way or a bad way, and taking smart measures to make it more helpful rather than harmful is better than labeling everything bad. Work smarter, not harder!

    Spending time on your phone actually saved you crazy amount of time, it's like teleporting. All the stuff that I've been learning, enjoying, and so on, on just my phone is crazy, people in the old days would never. It would take their lifetime to invent a camera, a stethoscope, a microscope, newspaper, and so much more, I get to see stars, viruses, people, and everything on my phone, seems like I have lived for thousands of years, goodstuff, keep using phones, it's a privilege

      I agree that a smartphone is an extremely powerful tool and it’s a privilege to be able to access it, but compared to all experiences we can have in life, a phone is still very limited. Especially if most of the time we spend on the phone is to see memes or things that we don’t really care about. If you can be conscious and intentional about how you use your phone, by all means keep at it! But I feel that the sad reality is that most people are just addicted to the dopamine boost and could be doing much better things.

    I feel like some comments missed the point of the video? Phones are great when used correctly, and I totally agree with that, but I think this video is addressing those who are mindlessly scrolling all the time (like me ). To me mindlessly scrolling is a waste of time, so this video is really helpful! I also think that if you want to identify the reason why you spend so much time on social media you first need take a step back from it. So I don’t think these tips are a way of “running away from your problems” but more like tips to help you get the time to think.

I turned down a phone at 13 because I didn't want to be on it all the time. Now I share a Homephone but I'm still on it way more than I wish I was.
