    Crystal Ships is truly an incredible piece of writing, the chord progression is so unusual, and non-formulaic, that it always evokes a sense of wonder, and freshness, even though the song is nearly 50 years old now...

    In around 1990, I visited Jim's grave in Paris and was stunned to see another 10 or so people there, all paying homage to the legend that was Jim Morrison. It brought home to me the fact that he was not just a musician, he was an icon and will never be forgotten. He may no longer be with us, taken far too early, but his music will never die. R.I.P Jim

    its awesome to see a younger person love the doors so much as to say "nooooooo!", and then say, on the spot, in the moment, say "f it, no, we're doimg another doors song"...im only in my mid-forties, but they changed my view towards music as a high school student in the early 1990's...such a vibe and mythology around them...amd groovy, and intricate, and thought out musically, awesome words...anyway, hell ueah

      van morrison and the band "them" did the original version of "gloria", but the doors took it to poetic, jammy, level, amd made it a little harder...van's version is dope tho.....the doors had a way with covers, check out the live versions of "who do u love?" originally by bo diddley, and "black train song/away to india", live in 1970 (in philladelphia, i "think", cant remember), which is a truly epic and insanely good take/cover on/of elvis's song "mystery train"

      I agree with your list (but not so much Wishful Sinful). There are three versions of Maggie M'Gill. Each one's different and all three are good. My favorite version of Maggie M'Gill is the one from Live at the Felt Forum. I could listen to that all day. In fact, I do. Once I play it, just once, I still hear it in my head all day. It's got a groove that won't quit, man! John Sebastian joins them on stage to play harmonica.

    Your reactions to the videos are exceptionally good. And I especially love your reverence for Jim Morrison and The Doors. So many bands from that time made some of the best music ever created. Jim Morrison is definitely one of my all-time favorite poets. That was a lot of fun. Thanks

      I hadn't heard this song before, when it started I thought, it sounds like "Gloria" by the Troggs...wow, he took it a whole lot further. Well, I didn't know it was written by Van Morrison either and it's been covered by everyone on the planet!

    • @szqsk8
      @szqsk8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Best cover ever! This was a band warmup I think. If they had sung this on stage to an audience in the 60s there would have been a shytestorm. Jim’s performance of Gloria is epic.

      @@dushmanmardomyep, but not like this. And if you refer to the version on alive she cried, that is this one edited. The crowd cheering is fake. For real, if he sang this live to a big audience and all the press waiting for him to do something outrageous he would be mostly famous for this performance alone.

    I was 16 in High School when the Doors first hit the FM radio, in Detroit, with 'Light my Fire'. Got the Album the next day! Watching you 'change', right before my eyes, is heart-warming. At 71yrs old now, I often wonder what path my life would have taken, had I not been 'smitten' like you. Morrison was like a Big Brother to me.

    Oh man, Christal ship is a cool song -- but... GLORIA (written by Van Morrison) by The Doors is really cool !!! It's so brilliantly rewritten and the realization of the "Doors" is really out of this world. "The Doors" met Van Morrison in the "whisky a go go" and they asked if they could record this song - and they could. Thanks for share, no one before you had the balls to interpret this version - although - you didn't have many words afterwards either ;-:)). you don't want to tell us that you're shocked, do you? I would really be surprised. Best wishes @all from hamburg (germany)

    I remember when Them came out with the song back in 64. It was one of the songs that was played at every party and numerous organized dances that featured live bands (mostly local). Songs like Gloria, Wooly Bully, Wild Thing, Mustang Sally, just to name a few. However, time marched on and the came The Doors. Even though they performed the song numerous times, it was finally released on the album "Alive, She Cried" in 1983, as well as a single the same year. Not exactly a version that was played at local dances. I wonder why?
