Thankfully a perfect fit with Led Zeppelin, & thanks to Plant (longtime friend & former band mate) recommended him. Bonham played this solo a little over 200 times, watching from other concerts, it’s pretty much exactly the same. To think besides killing the drums for 3 to 4 hour nonstop concerts, he played this amazing solo. When he first got his Ludwig kit, it had 2 bass drums, yes these band mates did say they were to loud lol. The drums themselves are big, but as a whole his kit really isn’t, he didn’t need so many pieces to get he’s amazing sounds etc. He’s not one of the greatest, he’s a DRUM GOD, in the greatest band with three other MUSIC GODS. YES he left way to soon, we sure needed many more years of his genius talent. I’d suggest Dazed & Confused longest live version you can find * Achilles Last Stand live at Knebworth (1979). And live at Earls Court the May 25,1975 version of In My Time Of Dying, amazing songs & drumming. Thanks for your reaction, I love this video. It was originally called Pat’s Delight after his wife, but his son Jason called it Moby Dick, daddy’s big big song.
@@sicotshit7068 I had heard that Jimmy had already picked a session drummer for LZ. Robert said he should hear Bonzo so the went to one of his bands shows. Jimmy asked Robert to invite John to the group, when Robert asked him he said Pat would kill him if he left a steady paying gig to get back together w him, and declined the offer. Robert went back to Jimmy and said he would have to stick w his first choice, Jimmy said I must have him. So they began sending telegrams and flowers to the Bonham household and eventually Pat gave her permission. It was Jimmy's band on paper and in the studio, but at a live show it was Bonzo who was the leader of the band. 1973 MSG start of the concert, the band is waiting for him to Start Rock & Roll. He yells out to his band mates "that's right lets Go ! That same concert after Moby Dick, he starts off Heartbreaker. I 'm still amazed at that Bonham Grove, thousands yelling and screaming and he comes out with this! Can not imagine another drummer in the world starting like this after a 15 minute solo. I always thought I could play this because it is slow, I get so excited just pretending that those fans are real and play it way too fast every time. RIP JHB

Most drummers need a double pedal setup to match the speed of Bonzo's right foot. The speed of his bass drum triple's is astonishing. An amazing heel/toe technique.

Been listening to them since I was probably 12. nearly 50 yrs. He never ceases to amaze me. Bonzo must have had one brain for each limb. He was a beast!

This blew my doors off as a young teen seeing this. I'm 62 years of age and still think he was a genius they all are. I actually respect J.P.J the most, but they all gave to the whole of the group, and that's what made it all so special.
Na that's Neil Peart, Bonzo might have been had he not died at such a young age but Neil was a high level drummer longer than John was with us on this ball of mud. RIP to both legends.
@Fred-vy1hm Peart was too technical for me and he got where he did via practice. Bonham was just 21 here. Peart in no way was on this level aged 21. Bonham was more natural and with a superior feel. Of course, Peart never got anywhere near Bonham's power and sound. You cannot learn that. You either have it or you don't.

Saw JB play this 2X live, `70 at Winterland (SF) and `77 Day on the green (Oakland,ca) both times just AWESOME, this band was 10X LIVE as you witness true greatness that went right to your soul. `70 at Winterland sat next to the light crew. Zo LOUD yet so CLEAR. Bonham looking like a linebacker attacking the skins!
Saw Zep at MSG '77 with the guys, we were 16yo from Brooklyn. Got up to the stage during Jimmy's Stairway solo, when he popped his E string and of course, kept on wailing...Jones, Bonham and Robert were, well, Led. FYI, 1975 Playboy poll had Karen Carpenter beat out John, Moon and Ringo 🎸
There have been (and still are) a lot of fantastic drummers, but I've never seen a drummer who can control each of their limbs independently and speed up/ slow down each one independently. Known as the octopus for some very good reasons....

You have to react to Larnell Lewis' The City Lights Drum Solo. Such a high IQ drum solo. It's F-ING AMAZING!!!!! Less than 4 minutes, but so full of brilliant drumming. 1.1 Million views.
....and to think.....the world is introduced to LZ and Bonham, single, Ludwig Speed King triplets. (1st Album, 1st Track ). And how does he top that? He puts a drum solo already, on their sophomore album! Who does that!??? 😮
As a drummer myself, he's my personal favorite drummer. But I get different things from different drummers. ie; power, Thunderous, straight forward drummers (Bonham, Tommy Lee). Double Bass (Dave Lombardo, Tim " Herb" Alexander ). Tribal drumming (Mike Bordin, Mick Fleetwood, Billy Cobham). Finesse , technical drummers (Neil Peart, Nikko McBrain). Odd timing drummers (Danny Carey, Matt Cameron, Carter Beauford). Cymbal work drummers ( Dave Abruzze, Terry Bozzio). Hi Hat drummers (Clem Burke, Budgie, Stewart Copeland). Funk drummers (TonyThompson, Clyde Stubblefield). Jazz (Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich).Shuffle drummers (Benard Purdie, Jeff Pocaro, John Bonham, SteveGadd)........and so on. You get the picture!😂
Yes…he is awesome here. But have you watched him in, for instance 1). Knebworth Kashmir 2) Kebworth Achilles Last Stand )Earls Court In My Time of Dying ? One of the most incredible things about Bonham was that he not only set the pocket, but he also was in a band famous fir it’s improvisation, so he was totally tuned into Jimmy Page and was able to switch on a dime to support him wherever he went. Jimmy depended on him for that…and JPJ was totally tuned into both Bonzo and Jimmy…..They were so tight and operated as a unit. And THAT’s why Bonzo was irreplaceable when he passed. There were other excellent drummers out there who offered to step in, but Bonzo was literally irreplaceable….it was no longer Zeppelin without him. He was the perfect drummer for Zeppelin….He would NOT have been a fit with…..Yes orcGenesis or The Stones or Floyd. Maybe Sabbath.
