There had also been a competition if you will between the music Cass was doing and what Janis brought from Texas. She left here (Austin) for CA, and the rest is history.
As others have said, the woman in the crowd was Mama Cass. What made that so special was Mama Cass was one of the top female singers of that generation and a future member of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.
It's what made her stand out at the time... There weren't all that many female vocalists in rock bands at that time, and almost none that sang with the raw power she did
Exactly! Janis is beyond comparing to anyone else. I just love watching people react to this song knowing that Janis is going to reach down into her soul and touch ours. Damn, she almost levitates herself with emotion!
Having grown up in this area, I was there for this incredible performance. Jimi Hendrix had his break out performance this weekend also. That was Mama Cass from the Mamas and the Poppas. She was instrumental in creating this festival who was in shock and awe as we all were. Janis was such a force of nature and moved and shook people and left them changed including me. I saw her once more in 1969 in San Francisco and so grateful I did🎶‼️ Her rendition of summertime is beautiful as well as Me and Bobby McGhee. Thanks for bringing our Pearl to the party🌹🎈❣️
Janis' catalog is rich and deep! Check out everything you can to see her incredible vocal range, from "Cry Baby" to "Summertime" and "Me and Bobby McGee" her soul is there, you can feel it!!! Great choice!
Catch the live version of Summertime! Or Ball and Chain from Frankfurt, Germany. At this stage, she hadn't matured as a singer yet....and it was still great. RIP, Janis. Big respect for your reaction, man. PS: The lady in the crowd was Mama Cass, a fine singer herself.
You've stumbled on the perfect synthesis of jazz and blues. Even Mama Cass couldn't shut her mouth. Janice was on fire, Big Brother guys weren't so bad either.
I love that you do a bit of research before reacting. So glad you've "found" Janis - she was a force of nature. That was pure soul. Stay in this rabbithole, and you'll never be disappointed. Great reaction, thanks for sharing!
Janis is on a level of her own. There are videos of her and the band performing on the Dick Cavett Show. He would interview her after a song and she was exhausted. In every performance she bore all that was in her right before you. That is brave. I am so grateful for your appreciation of this earlier music.
Take a minute to look up what singers influenced Janis Joplin. Big Mama Thornton, Odetta, Bessie Smilth, Leadbelly, among others. I read that she didn't have a very happy childhood and didn't want to be or do what her family expected her to be or do. Seems to me a lot of young people can relate to that. The Blues singers, especially the female blues singers were her idols. I was in high school back then. I heard Janis for the first time on a bootleg FM radio station one night and got her first album as soon as I could. 'Janis,' I'd say to myself alone in my room. "I got the blues today. Tell it for me.' She didn't just tell it, she shouted it! A white woman blues shouter is what she was. Time and past time for that! And man, could she ever!
That lady in the crowd was Mama Cass, an iconic singer in her own right. She was with the Mama's and the Papa's. She was one of the organizers of that event.
Some performances are so sublime they trancend all musical genres so no matter your taste in music be it Rock Classical Country etc. You can only watch this girl in amazement
You're dead on, puts her soul into the music as you have to leave it all on the stage. The Queen of Scream. The woman in the audience that was enraptured with her was Mama Cass of The Mamas and the Papas. (Also now dead, young) You may or may not choose to do them too.
Despite the vicious rumors, Momma Cass Elliot did not die from choking on a ham sandwich, the ME report said it was a clear heart attack from years of crash dieting!
First time viewing you. You won’t be disappointed if you view Judy Garland singing OLD MAN RIVER. In 1963-64 she had her own TV show and sang it on her show. It’s on you tube and easy to find. She was the best. Hope you make the time to see this. Thanks.
The Monterey Pop Festival was epic, featuring legendary performances from Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, The Who, and Jimi Hendrix. When you're ready for some funky stuff from her, check out "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)". PS. Robert Plant found inspiration in Janis Joplin.
JANIS JOPLIN My 2 favorites are ... Piece Of My Heart... Studio version and ...Me And My Bobby McGee...studio version. She does have 'smoother' vocals. That was Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas.
Indeed, to me she's in the same set with Jim Morrison and Robert Plant. I am more a fan of British rock, but there are two American acts in my top 10 of all time - The Doors and Janis Joplin. She is something special.
I'm a senior guy now but I sang in a few rock bands in my day. I didn't know what to expect from an obviously good looking guy like you I thought you were going to come off as a bit arrogant. But instead you just stated your mind. I think the studio version of piece of my heart when Janis had developed her voice a bit more would be something you would be impressed with. Theres no holding back the mike. Just loud raw power. Good luck to you!
I LOVE Janice Joplin, she has soul pouring out of every pore of her being. This is not the best quality audio and it is live back in the day. If you got to close to the mic with that powerful of a voice, you would have been having a lot of feedback screeching so you kind of had to back away a bit. Thank you for your reaction. That lady in the crowd was Cass Elliot who was an awesome singer for the group The Mamas and The Papas. Cass had the most beautiful voice, you should really check out a song or two from that group. Their harmonies were excellent. One of my favorite Janis Joplin songs is "Cry Baby" she really takes that song to the limit.
If I remember correctly, Janis went out to buy heroin, but it was not from her usual source, so she had no idea of the strength, and it was much much stronger than what she would normally have, and that's what got her. When my mother was dying of cancer in 1989, she was in much pain, and the morphine they had had her on was not sufficient. I asked the nurse why hospitals couldn't use heroin and she basically said the same thing - they would be unable to determine the strength. I don't know if that still holds true today....
You looking taller, bigger, hair is longer, a little older...looking really good! G0sh, you got so much musical catagory in you, too! So glad you didn't let it slip by you.
JANIS JOPLIN - BALL & CHAIN LIVE @ MONTEREY POP... This was her breakout performance. She died of a heroin overdose. She had been clean but while she was waiting for somebody to show up she decided to get high and didn't check the strength as it usually was cut to only 10%. Not this time. There were a lot of deaths in LA from it which became a story line for Cop shows. Find the killer heroin. Her greatest hit was ... Me and My Bobby McGee ..that was released after she died.
She was a truly tragic figure, I worked with a guy in Houston who payed in her band before she went to LA, he said the guys knew she was going to kill herself with the hard drinking and drugs. He couldn't stay in the room if she came on the radio.
Dropping the jaw of Mama Cass was no small thing. She was music royalty of the time and a Hall of Fame inductee.
The reason Mama Cass in the JJ song was a self promotion because the Mamas and the Papas help sponsor the festival
There had also been a competition if you will between the music Cass was doing and what Janis brought from Texas. She left here (Austin) for CA, and the rest is history.
@@sylviafarese8837 Yes, she grew up in Port Arthur. They treated her horribly.
I'm just glad she wasn't eating a ham sandwich during this performance.
Janis asked Cass if she could do this song. Cass' response: "Don't f*ck it up." 😂😂😂
As others have said, the woman in the crowd was Mama Cass. What made that so special was Mama Cass was one of the top female singers of that generation and a future member of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.
the lady in the crowd they showed was Mama Cass Elliot of the Mamas and Papas. she arranged for Janis to perform.
She could croon and sing with rich clarity, but actively sought to convey emotion over form. Rawness was so highly valued in that era and scene.
It's what made her stand out at the time... There weren't all that many female vocalists in rock bands at that time, and almost none that sang with the raw power she did
And it's greatly missed now.
She could sing the phone book and make it iconic.
They called her The Pearl for a reason. She just channeled her soul into the music.
She walked onto that stage a virtual unknown and walked off a Star!
The joy on her face!
just like it happened to hendrix at this very festival
just like it happened to hendrix at this very festival
Big Brother and the Holding Company was a bad ass band. ❤😊
Like Grace Slicks band Jefferson Airplane
Watching Mama Cass be blown away says everything
She's amazing and a very sweet loving person..... look up summer time Janis Joplin...I think it was one of the greatest songs ever
There is only one Janis Joplin. A legend. She offered so much to so many with her incredible talent. That was Mama Cass Elliot in the audience.
No Inhibition, She just let loose no matter the Song, Never be another Janis❤ Cass Elliott, is just floored😂🎉❤
Her backing away from the mic when singing was a technique to get a fade. Old school. Now it’s done electronically
She is a Legend
Exactly! Janis is beyond comparing to anyone else. I just love watching people react to this song knowing that Janis is going to reach down into her soul and touch ours. Damn, she almost levitates herself with emotion!
She sings with her whole body...love ya, Janis
Having grown up in this area, I was there for this incredible performance. Jimi Hendrix had his break out performance this weekend also. That was Mama Cass from the Mamas and the Poppas. She was instrumental in creating this festival who was in shock and awe as we all were. Janis was such a force of nature and moved and shook people and left them changed including me. Her rendition of summertime is beautiful as well as Me and Bobby McGhee. Thanks for bringing our Pearl to the party🌹🎈❣️
Was there myself, great
Piece of My Heart (album version) and Cry Baby (live) two of her best ✌️
You can have a song or you can have a performance. Janis gave you everything she had.
Janis was the one that shocked everyone. Dayum! Incredible singer
First Lady of Rock without a doubt.
Cass Elliott was the woman in the crowd with the sunglasses (she hated being called mama). Sadly, she was only 32 when she passed away.
I got to see Janis in November of 1969 in Miami. Unforgettable.
You picked the very best of Janis live.
A voice like a chainsaw straight through your heart!
i like that
Christ I get teary eyed every time I hear that shit. Unreal
Pure emotion. Greatest white female blues singer. Listen to Summertime and Piece of my heart! Fire
I was at this show! I love her so much. She loved the blues. Saw Otis Redding on the same day there!
My brother was at that Monterey concert. There is a shot of him in the movie climbing out his sleeping bag at the beginning of the Ravi Shankar set .
Janis' catalog is rich and deep! Check out everything you can to see her incredible vocal range, from "Cry Baby" to "Summertime" and "Me and Bobby McGee" her soul is there, you can feel it!!! Great choice!
This is my girl! Janis Joplin is/was the GOAT! ❤❤
The pride of Port Arthur, Texas!
Great reaction..
Janis= Queen of the blues
Yes!! This is one of the all time great performances. So glad you found it. ❤
I was young like you when she cut this song and wish I could hear Janis all over again for the first time. I hope you enjoyed this.
You've stumbled on the perfect synthesis of jazz and blues. Even Mama Cass couldn't shut her mouth. Janice was on fire, Big Brother guys weren't so bad either.
She was like Joe Cocker. They both sang with their whole body.
I love that you do a bit of research before reacting. So glad you've "found" Janis - she was a force of nature. That was pure soul. Stay in this rabbithole, and you'll never be disappointed. Great reaction, thanks for sharing!
The beginning of this song is so Hendrix-like 🎶
If James Brown had a sister...It would have been Janis.
Agree 😂
remember, the "south California purples" were being circulated in the crowd (Owsley pure mikes)...2001 monolith DNA upgrade
Hey Pope! Hope you are doing well? Janis gone way too soon. 27 club. Gone but certainly not forgotten!! Enjoy.🔈🔉🔊🎤🎤🎤👍😎
This was her first BIG gig.
Janis is on a level of her own. There are videos of her and the band performing on the Dick Cavett Show. He would interview her after a song and she was exhausted. In every performance she bore all that was in her right before you. That is brave. I am so grateful for your appreciation of this earlier music.
In my mind Etta James and Janice Joplin are from the same spiritual mother.
Great Reaction Pope! My Homegirl Janis Joplin from Port Arthur, TX ..
A GOAT🐐 BEFORE WE KNEW IT !!! 😢😍
Janice and Aretha. The two best singers of the 20th and 21 st century.
Yes my girl JJ ☮️💜🤘🔥
Shes from port arthur Texas
That lady in the crowd was Mama Cass, an iconic singer in her own right. She was with the Mama's and the Papa's. She was one of the organizers of that event.
Some performances are so sublime they trancend all musical genres so no matter your taste in music be it Rock Classical Country etc. You can only watch this girl in amazement
Thanks for the reaction, try her Piece of My Heart!
That was Janis feeling her pain in public. She suffered for her love.
There must be an awesome concert going on up there
I have always loved her music. I was 18 in 1970.
So was I. Loved Janis to bad she left us so early. Some of the greatest couldn’t shake the demon.
You're dead on, puts her soul into the music as you have to leave it all on the stage. The Queen of Scream. The woman in the audience that was enraptured with her was Mama Cass of The Mamas and the Papas. (Also now dead, young) You may or may not choose to do them too.
Little Pieces of my Heart out shines this. IMO.
Despite the vicious rumors, Momma Cass Elliot did not die from choking on a ham sandwich, the ME report said it was a clear heart attack from years of crash dieting!

My Janis. Love her ❤❤❤
Oh she up there 🔥
And a super star was born
The omg lady in the crowd. Was Cass Elliot from the Mamas and the Papas.. and she did a lot of solo..the was Queen of the 60s
Jimi hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all died 27 years old within 6 months in 1970/1971. They are the founders of the 27 club.
So sad 😢
The Monterey Pop Festival was epic, featuring legendary performances from Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, The Who, and Jimi Hendrix. When you're ready for some funky stuff from her, check out "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)". PS. Robert Plant found inspiration in Janis Joplin.

I'm aging myself but I saw her live in San Francisco. She was amazing.
That plus size queen in the sunglasses face shows just what every first time listener feels listening to Janis Joplin.
Yes 27 club😢
The Kozmic Queen ❤
Janice was very close to Jimi Hendrix and his death affected her greatly. And then she was gone! Two of my favorite performers gone Just like that!
That lady was Cass Elliott of the Mama and the Papas. Mama Cass was a great singer, too.
Indeed, to me she's in the same set with Jim Morrison and Robert Plant. I am more a fan of British rock, but there are two American acts in my top 10 of all time - The Doors and Janis Joplin. She is something special.
POPE😮THE GOAT of Reactors ❤

You nailed it.
🤍
you always make me smile when I'm able to watch your videos.....🌸
☺️

just in case nobody else has mentioned it, the woman who is mesmerized in the audience
is Mama Cass of The Mamas & the Papas.
You looking taller, bigger, hair is longer, a little older...looking really good! G0sh, you got so much musical catagory in you, too! So glad you didn't let it slip by you.
The best woman singer🤘
❤Loved your reaction ❤
Check out her "Cry Baby " live version. It's jaw-dropping. Seriously.
Janis, Summertime Live 1969
💙💙💙
Try Ram Jam "Black Betty"
JANIS JOPLIN - BALL & CHAIN LIVE @ MONTEREY POP... This was her breakout performance. She died of a heroin overdose. Janis was known as The Female James Brown.
Listen to her singing Summertime.
Man she amazing 😂❤ ok
That's Mama Cass Elliott
Pope, check out the song Bobby Mcgee.
The lady was Cass Elliot from the Mamas and the Papas
I think even her moving away from the mic was part of how she used her voice.
The one and only. The live version of Cry Baby is the finest thing that anyone has ever heard!!
Yes she was big at the time
She was a truly tragic figure, I worked with a guy in Houston who payed in her band before she went to LA, he said the guys knew she was going to kill herself with the hard drinking and drugs. He couldn't stay in the room if she came on the radio.
Oooh man just amazing ❤😂
