smart move on changing the 3 pan torx bolts to hex head bolts. I remember they were a pain to remove first time around because of the obstruction. Now I have to do the same service again.

I was wondering if low fluid cause the transmission drop gears at a certain trans temperature?

It's possible. How many miles on the transmission? Low fluid can cause many problems depending on how low including gear shift problems. Dirty fluid and bad valves can also cause issues.

I remember getting a great deal on 12 liters of the Febi 29738 which I bought since I was planning on doing a filter fluid service followed by a simple drain and fill a few thousand miles later. I think I had less than a liter remaining after both services. I hope that helps.
