I had designed and began work converting a minivan into a mini camper with everything you'd have in a full size. Tried to do too much too quickly got frustrated by setbacks and burned out.. now the project is not finished and I can't seem to get back into it😒 -hoping within time I will find the passion again and then 1.5hrs max each time I work on it.
I really doubt it, i think he is a total asshole. The part where he talked about the saab that was for sale for 2500 and he waited for the owner of the car, to be on the point of being evicted. And than bid 1800, is one thing. But just find it funny and laugh about it, makes you a downright asshole in my book.
what a great piece. Interesting in every way. You don't have to be a SAAB-fan to watch this. You don't even have to be interested in cars to watch this. Great work
This guy is a true enthusiast and apparently an undiscovered tv personality he owned the show all by himself. Excellent production from /Drive keep it up!
In the 60s, I lived in CT just a couple miles away from SAAB port USA in New Haven. Wardell G. Hadley was a marketing manager there; I mowed his lawn once a week. Really looked forward to the time spent reading R&T issues between the cut and get paid. And Ward's great stories. And some freebie promo stuff like a rare drymounted litho of a 96 cornering hard in snow at the 1968 Monte. Drinking Pommac there, which was a funky Swedish soft drink kind thing which SAAB ... ummmmmm, smuggled. Yes, in the trunks of the 96's I no so far later was driving out the side of a transport the ship several stories up. On pre-OSHA creaky metal rams that had flexible points to go up n down with the boat! Got a 96 Monte Carlo for college - Snowmageddon 1977 in Rochester NY had EVERYONE snowbound. Except for that disparaged 'Egg", 4 Vredstein M+S studded had that stumpuller first getting me through all of it, slow motion but faster that everyone else watching enviously and shoveling snow. Great memories, thanks for being a great SAAB story!
Yes, that is such a cool piece. He explains it a bit more in the companion AFTER/DRIVE episode that's more focused on vintage rallying. Check the description for the link to the episode. Thanks for watching.
Ended up at this guys house through my work one day. Awesome guy, got to see the rally car up close, and showed us the storage garage too. Great to see him on here!
I saw a similar SAAB rally car at the Rally of the 100 Acre Wood in Salem, MO It sounds like an angry chainsaw charging through the woods, it was a huge crowd favorite
There should be a /drive series for people like this, that collect really obscure cars. It's always really cool to see people that are passionate about really weird cars.
I own a factory High pressure turbo 1996 Saab 9000 Aero, No TCS, Factory Recaros. The car isn't in perfect shape, but it's one of the greatest cars I've driven & I've driven cars such as a Alfa Romeo Giulia quadrifoglio's, Porsche Cayman S, 996 Carrera 4's, Lamborghini Huracan LP510 etc. I will forever drive a Saab.
Awesome collection and a pretty cool guy who is interested in a car not too many people know at all. Great that he restores them himself in his garage and enjoys owning and driving them.
This is probably one of the most well put together videos you guys have done... you must have taken lessons from him! Thanks for putting this together... (BTW I had a 1970 99e and it was the coolest car I've ever owned.)
I had a 1965 Saab 96 when I was 17 (in 1967) and the Saab dealer I went to for parts (I did all of my own work too) had a 2 cylinder Saab on display near the parts counter. I dearly loved that car, and always drove it like I was in a race. Sadly, while I was racing around on Merritt Island Drive (Florida) I overcooked a corner at the same time a flash shower decided to burst, and the rear end began to pass my front end. After a good spin out I found myself off the road and spinning through the palmettos, and then I hit the ONLY TREE out there broadside. The whole car folded in the middle, the windshield popped out (as they were designed to) and my non-seat belted teenage butt went flying from the driver's seat to the passenger seat (the roomy, flat floor permitted me to remain vertical) and into the padded arm rest on the passenger door. A few years later I bought a 1967. An extra carburetor yielded 42 horsepower instead of the rather pedestrian 40 horsepower of my 1965. The Bosch distributor caps had an unfortunate tendency to develop hairline cracks, invisible to the eye, but plenty roomy for nighttime Florida humidity (or rain) to creep through. The 2 stroke Sonnett is the second coolest and most beautiful car ever designed, the first being the Jaguar XKE, of course.
I love this guy. He looks like a teacher from the 80's, hangs shit on the cars he's passionate about and drives his cars hard. A car enthusiast if I ever saw one for sure.
My first car, 1972, was a 1967 SAAB 2-stroke 3 Weber carb 96 . . . loved that car, the sound and smell . . . fun to drive. My dad sold it out from under me while I was at college . . . shame . . . great car . . . love to watch Jalopnik and Amesie's videos . . . fond memories.
I bought a new Saab Sonett in 1967 in Columbus, Ohio. It was serial # 232. I drove it till 1970 and traded it for a BMW 2002 in Knoxville, Tn. It ended up in California for awhile and I think now it is in teh Netherlands. Great car. I even got to run it on a NASCAR track where a friend was the PR director.
According to the Sonett II registry, your car is now owned by HANS VAN VEEN, 4792 TOPANGA CYN WOODLAND HILLS, CA. 91364. Of course this info is a bit old, so it may very well need to be updated again. Go get it back!
SO GREAT!!! My dad was a SAAB fanatic from the start. We had multiples of every kind of SAAB! I so wish they were still around. My dream SAAB - a classic 80s 900 Turbo SPG. YES!!
... I came to SAAB a little later ... in 1978 my father was hired by SAAB SCANIA as a District Manager ... and he brought home this funny looking, (4) headlight, curved windshield car ... a 78' SAAB 99 Turbo ... and I fell in love w/ them. As a engineering student I just loved all the safety features ... and when you shifted into 2nd gear ... that funny looking car got up and was ... GONE!!! I surprised the heck out of a lot of other drivers/cars !!! I have a 91' 900 Turbo Convertible to this day ... best car ever built !!!
We have seen the rally xcar before, but overall: DAMN good video! Loved seeing the fantastic old cars, and loved listening to the owner. i could do with him reviewing every single model/type he has, telling funny stories about them.
At first browsing youtube and coming across "Obsessed Saab Collector" in the title I was a bit apprehensive but what the heck, it's a few minutes of my time. After watching a few minutes and seeing the passion this man has for Saab won me over. Now i've subscribed to this channel too, I am a fan.
this guy is awesome. i just watched the other video of him, you made. man he idolized that rally driver in the other video but its through here, thats its clear. he is building his own pedigree and his own legacy with these cars. he has been one of the most enjoyable spotlight features in recent past. this was truly entertaining, well produced and his love for saab has been thorough and life lived. if only we could all be like this guy with our own passions.
As a bother in the Swedish car army I really enjoyed this video. Bruce is his own man, my cousins in the Turk family are all like that. I love them. My wife drove Saab and I drove Volvo for years. She still owns a 9-7x linear. I'm now shopping for an old Bertone Volvo or a Saab 900 SPG but prices are high for those right now.
I really like the fact that he actually drives his cars and enjoys them. Not like other collectors, who just stack their cars in the garage, and let the dust gather on them. The "rally" part was just awesome, he's killing it, and that's why cars are made in the first place :)
Thank you, great story, great collection. We changed from the regular large v8 sedans to Saabs in the early 60s One 93 (1960), two 96 (1963). and my 93 Gran Tourissmo 1959. Great cars for their time.
Great job, Max + Ian. THIS is the ONE Swedish car video on /DRIVE that works for me. Authentic, Approachable, Storytelling. [aaaand pretty sure THIS opinion will get /DRIVE comment! ehhh.]
This guy has a great attitude, I'm not even a Saab fan but as a car enthusiast i think this guy does the right things in the right way. cheap, slow restorations and he's not afraid of using the cars even though they win awards at shows and he's also not afraid of admitting that these cars can be shit, but he's obsessed with them anyway. As i said, great attitude.
Great video, at 1st I was like man 20 mins, but then its over just like that, so enjoyable. My 1st saab was the 2003 93 Linear, i'm getting a 2007 93 Aero V6 which I think is the best year
I can see putting that strange echo when he said disease, but then you guys just went overboard. That was really annoying to listen to and ruined the presentation.
We had a Saab 96 with a two stroke and it did 83 mph top speed, I learned how to drive in that car and took my driving test in a new Dodge Dart Swinger. The first car I bought myself was when I was 18 and in the US Coast Guard I bought a 1968 Dodge Charger RT that went over 150 mph. I'm glad I lived through that.
----And you don´t know what slow is till you been driving this car - hahahaha Great Comment. An absolute blast of a video, funny, understated and finally someone who is not all about horsepower, but just seams to enjoy what he does, the way he does it. Love that Rally car and perfect road settings for it, looks very much like many smaller country roads in Sweden. Great Vid, Thank You ;)
Cool blog guys, definitely a fanatic, nice work, I remember riding I'm one is a child. it was totally different from anything else on the road, when compared to the British sports cars this was cheap and fun
Cool video. He seems to be a great guy. I'm Swedish and "sort of" learned to drive with a Saab 96 V4. It was an early V4-model, -67 or -68 with the silver engine, round lights and lower front window. The engine had some level of rally upgrades with dual carbs and increased engine volume etc. Was still rather slow by modern standards of course but I had loads of fun going sideways through corners on gravel roads in the forrests when I was 15-16 years old.. It held up surprisingly well actually. Until the engine caught fire twice as a pipe came loose in the engine room and after that we gave up on it..
I proposed to my college sweetheart in a blue 1966 SAAB 96 44 years ago and we're still crazy about each other--another testimonial to the lasting power of those funky Swedish wonders!
I like this guys style "You don't know what slow is until you've driven one of these". My first car was a 1968 Mk1 Escort 2 door 1300. slow yet rewarding... at times. Cheers for the video bro
Makes me think back to the first time I heard that 2 stroke Saab going down the street, it sounded so fast but took forever to go by me! Great video I Drive!
Love this guy! He is so honest. some collecters are all like "it was fast for the era" and crap like that but this guys so strait up. "Its slow" haha! Like!
I had a 1961 Saab 96 while in college. Drove it from NY to Kansas City and back. The interstate speed limit was 70mph, it would only do 65. Luckily my girl friend had a Fiat 850 spyder so she was sympathetic.
Fun video. I owned 3 Saab V4's and I'd buy another in a second if I had an extra $6k-$10k to throw around. I've driven some nice cars in my life, even a Ferrari GTB but I'd rather drive a Saab 96 V4 (I love the strokers too) and own than any car around, price/value be damned! They are simply the funnest cars to drive, especially on twisting hill roads. But my favorite is tearing up the dirt and gravel roads of my home, Kansas! The twisting creek and river roads are pure joy rallying through the country! And these cars are as durable as all get! Interestingly enough alot of farmers and ranchers had them for getting around in snow and rough roads or off road. That's where we often found barn finds as I had many friends who also had and loved these great cars. My oldest brother sold them at the local Saab/Lotus dealership in Wichita. After returning from Vietnam in 70' he moved to Denver and sold them there. My 2 other brothers and dad all had Saabs. Dad had the 99, Brian had several Sonnets and still has 2 900 turbos. Phil, who sold them had 96's and a 99 EMS. Now, to find a good 96 I can afford or win the lottery and buy several!
Great video. Honestly I wasn't expecting to watch more than a minute or two, but what an interesting guy, and great format/ production/whatever you call it.
I always wanted a Saab too as a kid. I got a 1977 Datsun 280-Z instead, and thought it was the king! Looking back, 190hp in a 3400 lb oversteering POS wasn't all that spectacular. Now I drive a heavily modified 2000 Audi s4 making around 400whp. It loves Saabs too! Glad to see someone with the love of cars who doesn't make it a damned religion! His 1.5 hour work schedule is admirable!
I had bought chassis #19 from a guy near Boston after it had been extensively raced at Bryar in N. H. I"ll never forget the drive back to Prov. RI. I had it floored from the toll booth to enter rt 95 south untill I arrived at my exit. While at the same time leaving my friend in his Shirroco miles behind. Upon passing slower cars, the people would look up to the sky, possibly looking for a airplane that was about to land on top of them! I also had a 67 v4 Sonnet, a750 gt, a 70 99, a 74 EMS, and a 76 EMS. With the 76, I was able to break the class record at Bryar. ( Corvettes of Mass autocross) You could say I had many sob stories!
The age old FWD vs RWD cornering bit. My brother doesnt have his charger anymore but took one corner all out at 55 I took it at 60 in my new beetle convertible with no lean. :)
This is so cool! What a great guy with super nice cars. I have a 2011 9-5 Aero and I love it. But I did drive a 2-stroke Saab one time and it was really a fantastic experience.
This guy has exactly the right attitude about his cars. He just adores them, but doesn't take them, or himself, too seriously.
This guy actually has the ability to work on a car for 90 minutes then say "meh, I'm done."
He wins.
I had designed and began work converting a minivan into a mini camper with everything you'd have in a full size. Tried to do too much too quickly got frustrated by setbacks and burned out.. now the project is not finished and I can't seem to get back into it😒
-hoping within time I will find the passion again and then 1.5hrs max each time I work on it.
Some say Saab people are quirky or unique, but I don't know... this guy seems pretty legit.
haha im the same as i was before i got my saab
I don't mind fitting that assessment.
Quinn Lawrence Indeed, I'm more quirky now I drive a Saab
+idriwzrd and what is not 'legit' about being unique? i would suggest anyone who is not is not legit but a faker.
I have several newer Saabs, and I'm quirky as hell and not changing for nobody.
This should have been a really boring video, but this guy has a good personality
I really doubt it, i think he is a total asshole.
The part where he talked about the saab that was for sale for 2500 and he waited for the owner of the car, to be on the point of being evicted.
And than bid 1800, is one thing.
But just find it funny and laugh about it, makes you a downright asshole in my book.
you have to think that 2500 was to much for that sonett though
Yeah right!!
what a great piece. Interesting in every way. You don't have to be a SAAB-fan to watch this. You don't even have to be interested in cars to watch this. Great work
"THIS CAR HAS ONE GOOD PANIC STOP IN IT. PANIC STOP TWO: YOU'RE THE ONE WHO PANICS"
This entire episode is gold! What a character!
Easily one of my favorite videos on this channel. The guy's love for Sabb's almost makes me want to love them.
There is nothing quite like hearing a 2-stroke rally SAAB coming through the woods. Like an angry chainsaw on steroids =)
Saab 96 2-stroke singing
This guy is a true enthusiast and apparently an undiscovered tv personality he owned the show all by himself. Excellent production from /Drive keep it up!

the rally car has an indicator from a russian plane on which is written "flight time". I like this guy:)
Yes, that is such a cool piece. He explains it a bit more in the companion AFTER/DRIVE episode that's more focused on vintage rallying. Check the description for the link to the episode. Thanks for watching.
Yes I noticed that. 14:55
I love the cheap rotisserie idea, this bloke has the brain the size of a planet much respect
He's a cross between Kip from Napoleon Dynamite and Walter White from Breaking Bad...
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Throw a little Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. into there, as well.
Definitely Kip, I soon as he opened his mouth I thought the same thing lol
Corporate Documents!!!
Dang, you beat me by a few hours. Yes, I thought this too.
Ended up at this guys house through my work one day. Awesome guy, got to see the rally car up close, and showed us the storage garage too. Great to see him on here!
Marvelous vintage Saab collection , and a great owner with a great personality , and he has tons of patience, and real passion for The Saab machines.
I saw a similar SAAB rally car at the Rally of the 100 Acre Wood in Salem, MO
It sounds like an angry chainsaw charging through the woods, it was a huge crowd favorite
Legendary,
Bruce will go down in Automotive Lore as the Heisenberg of the Saab world, a true viking.
This is one video I keep coming back to. Love everything about this.
As someone who owned two Saab 99s back in the 1970s and '80's I enjoyed this video.Saabs have always been innovative cars and way ahead of their time.
I love how he has a sense of humor about his cars...and that he drives them! Great video!
This guy is so cool! I own a 9-3 myself! Saab's are all I have ever owned! Such wonderful cars!
netrioter What's your point? A SAAB is still a SAAB.
Some of us happen to like out GM era Saab's...
Awesome collection and a pretty cool guy who is interested in a car not too many people know at all. Great that he restores them himself in his garage and enjoys owning and driving them.
This guy put a smile on my face the hole time this is my kind of video and people that I like to see.
This is probably one of the most well put together videos you guys have done... you must have taken lessons from him! Thanks for putting this together... (BTW I had a 1970 99e and it was the coolest car I've ever owned.)
This is possible the best video you guys have ever produced.
I love this guy. Absolutely passionate about Saabs and drives the hell out of his cars. I have mad respect for what he does and his attitude.
That's what its all about
This is probably one of the best things I've watched on drive.
I had a 1965 Saab 96 when I was 17 (in 1967) and the Saab dealer I went to for parts (I did all of my own work too) had a 2 cylinder Saab on display near the parts counter. I dearly loved that car, and always drove it like I was in a race. The whole car folded in the middle, the windshield popped out (as they were designed to) and my non-seat belted teenage butt went flying from the driver's seat to the passenger seat (the roomy, flat floor permitted me to remain vertical) and into the padded arm rest on the passenger door. The 2 stroke Sonnett is the second coolest and most beautiful car ever designed, the first being the Jaguar XKE, of course.
Excellent episode... This guy is a modern day artist... Shows how passion can truly inspire you...
I love this guy. He looks like a teacher from the 80's, hangs shit on the cars he's passionate about and drives his cars hard. A car enthusiast if I ever saw one for sure.
I'm glad we get to see the rest of his collection. Awesome editing with the memorabilia. Great history lesson. If there more we want it! :)
This guy deserves his own series on Drive. That rotisserie is genius, and the exhaust on the rally car, wow. Talking about burning your hand
My first car, 1972, was a 1967 SAAB 2-stroke 3 Weber carb 96 . . . loved that car, the sound and smell . . . fun to drive. My dad sold it out from under me while I was at college . . . shame . . . great car . . . love to watch Jalopnik and Amesie's videos . . . fond memories.
hes a unique person with a taste that reflects his uniqueness. good man.
Collectors, a great breed of people. What a wonderful little documentary. Thank you.

Wow, this video gotta win an award for the video with most soul and feel. This was a joy to watch. Thanks! :)
saab has always been rally car first. sadly not today.
+Spectre 80 They have some good rally cross cars, obviously its not Saab doing it but its awesome
One of my favorite */DRIVE* videos!
As a bother in the Swedish car army I really enjoyed this video. Bruce is his own man, my cousins in the Turk family are all like that. I love them. My wife drove Saab and I drove Volvo for years. Great cars for their time.
Dear "Whoever Edited the Memorabilia Part of this Video",
Don't do drugs.
Sincerely, "Concerned for Your Health"
SOOOOO much respect to this guy, I get pissed off at even the slightest issue when working on vehicles
Great job, Max + Ian. THIS is the ONE Swedish car video on /DRIVE that works for me. Authentic, Approachable, Storytelling.
[aaaand pretty sure THIS opinion will get /DRIVE comment! ehhh.]
This is one of the best videos I've seen on youtube
As a former Sonnett owner from the 70's, I appreciate this video and respect his approach.
Setting a time limit on auto work, home renovation, etc. is an excellent approach. It tends to minimize corner cutting and cursing.
this dude is awesome. ''gotta do everything on the cheap''. if you want a lot of cars. nice
This was a truly awesome episode!
My 1st saab was the 2003 93 Linear, i'm getting a 2007 93 Aero V6 which I think is the best year
This guy... This guy is freaking awesome, great video!
what a KING!
I lift my hat to you sir! My dad worrked for SAAB for 50 years, Trollhättan, sweden.
Wow, this is the perfect SAAB museum, there doesn't seem to be many people that collect them,it's nice to see all of these preserved and enjoyed.
why them Saab engines sound so freakin good what it this
2 stroke lol
I can see putting that strange echo when he said disease, but then you guys just went overboard. That was really annoying to listen to and ruined the presentation.
This guy is a legend and a man after my own heart, great attitude.

I knew a guy that had one in 1972 I loved it but now at 66 haven't found one. I love two stroke triple's. Thxs for sharing.
Love the saab rally car

love ur effort to preserve these saabs enjoyed the video havehad over 14 since i was a kid wish i lived next door ....
I love those 92/3/6's We had one when I was a kid and drove all over Europe in it.
The sound of that 2 Stroke! Got to love Saab. Started building 60 mph cars and now they're making 160 mph cars. I'd kill for a Sonett.
Not a fan of saabs but what an absolute legend...living the dream my friend
I proposed to my college sweetheart in a blue 1966 SAAB 96 44 years ago and we're still crazy about each other--another testimonial to the lasting power of those funky Swedish wonders!
Wow - what a GUY! Just pure laidback!

Totally amazing episode! Only Drive could produce a video like this. Love the choice of end music too :o)
love the idea for turning the car over very smart man..people like this are keeping old cars alive. keep up the good work☺.
Like!
Wow, awesome video! And that rally car, just perfect
It doesn't take much to do what you want to do, this guy is awesome
I had a 1961 Saab 96 while in college. Drove it from NY to Kansas City and back. The interstate speed limit was 70mph, it would only do 65. Luckily my girl friend had a Fiat 850 spyder so she was sympathetic.
I have always loved 2 strokes, v6 outboards are a riot of noise
Seeing your saabs especially the sonnets make me smile.
The sound editing is incredible fun! good job there ;) This Saab man collector is great
What do u mean?
What sound editing?
Watch the video and hear...
The echos? Would have been ok in moderation, got annoying instead.
@@KnifeNerd9 i completely agree
Are you saying you owned 1966 Sonett II #19? If so, I can tell you where it is now.
The age old FWD vs RWD cornering bit. My brother doesnt have his charger anymore but took one corner all out at 55 I took it at 60 in my new beetle convertible with no lean. :)
This is fantastic. Look at how that thing gets rallied at the end!
this is just tooooo awesome! more like this DRIVE!
This is so cool! What a great guy with super nice cars. I have a 2011 9-5 Aero and I love it. But I did drive a 2-stroke Saab one time and it was really a fantastic experience.
