Just catching up on videos, nice to see more of this area! Sent you on a right little explore! Evidence of the old railways has always fascinated me, there's LOADS of it in Wigan, I'll have to have an explore one day. It's always worth documenting this stuff because one day you'll turn around and the lot will have gone (there's planning for 500 apartments on this site, but they'll apparently retain the viaduct). Hi George. Great video. The third rail lines from Exchange were turned off for good shortly after the last empty 502 stock left Exchange on 29th April 1977, and the lines were lifted in late 1977 / early 1978. Interesting to note that Network Rail still use "Exchange" on their bridge strike warnings.
Great video, I climbed up on top of there via the lamppost at 6:35 on the video once upon a time, was doing a joinery course in one of the units archways on love lane but ended up playing footy instead, went up the to get the ball and could only walk in a straight line along the wall parallel to love lane because it was so overgrown, don't remember seeing any tracks, thanks to your video its good to know what I was climbing on now, keep them coming 👍

Great memories of back in the 80s, my Dad drove Crosville busses since the early 70s, but mid 80s, before its eventual demise, the depot moved to love Lane, I remember a lot of the drivers used to go drink in the Bull pub after work, that's also been boarded up for decades since then, such a rich history round that area & great to be reminded of happier times, another fab vid, keep em coming 👍
I used to work under one of those arches (the one next to the motorbike test place) over the road from Wiliams BMW. It was a little car bodyshop.... Good days and never gave much thought to the history... Good vid 👍
Great vid Mate, had down there pinned to. one of the archers was open for awile. to think to the trains went from Exchange to all over the country, very busy down there mid 50s with trains. Cheers Mate.
Hello, the long brackets high up on the walls usually carried electric power cables ,well out of harms way of the trains and people, the lamp bracket was for a large lamp lantern type fight fitting , both types produced by the railway companies on their own engineering works, by the thousand. The rail arches where owned by Railtrack then Network Rail who then sold them all off a s job lot all over the uk, some where expensively remodeled new lighting and insulation etc, recently a planning application as been put in for 11 storey flats to be built above the arches, they may well be listed so cant be knocked down, the site on Pall Mall and Love Lane would be an ideal site for a new station and bus interchange to the Northern line next to it, the sub station is a connection to the wirral via the new mersey tunnel, to feed power both ways as far as i know.
A great video. Even in the state the viaduct's in now you can see how impressive it would have been when in use. The Victorian engineers built their viaducts to last.
Great vid. Imagine if that was done up with a few bars in the arches rather than left as a dumping ground. If you want to explore other bits of abandoned railway from around the same period then have a gander behind the Brewster Street Spar. There was a lot of digging around the Kirkdale area, and there is an abandoned tunnel/cutting from Kirkdale station to Breeze Hill nestled between the still in use Bootle Branch line and Northern Line.
in Manchester old bridge they made into gardens u can visit it have look on line old liverpool viaduct is great see them u should get telescopic ladder to explore great to see old past let old wooden landing stage victoria docks u vist long time go wont be long before it demolished for cruises ship extension great video
Old Enamelled "Benjamin" light fittings with Giant Edison screw lamps. Used to relamp using a long pole and twist 300 watt bulb from socket. All conduits are wrapped in Denso tape to prevent sulphur corrosion from the locos
Went for a run down here today would never of seen that light bracket without watching this. That merc was still parked there as well not been robbed or stripped yet 😂
Great to see the north docks area one of my Grandads grew up around here. The area has a lot of potential with the railway, the arches, the docks, Dublin Street's Rock photo history and the new football stadium. Hopefully new businesses will be attracted to the area and more residents so it isn't so ghostly and to deter fly tipping and no marks. The area needs to be a bit less industrial and a bit more touristy/entertainments based. My first thought about that overgrowth on the arches was to get it all cut down but then I thought how is that going to look and who's maintaining that long-term? They're all privately owned so not the council's responsibility so letting nature take its course is probably for the best.
Iv been going there for years getting my car fixed at Tony’s garage wer the cameras are, them cameras are very much alive , still a few business’s down there mainly auto ie mechanical and body repairs, used to be loads of fly tipping hence the cameras, lot of the travelling community used to just leave old unused caravans there , great piece of history
Ive heard that when bramley moore stadium opens these are all to be demolished apparently ...dont knownhow true that is The good old travellers from oil street lol Thanks for watching so much history around here
You did right to use the drone rather than climbing up, not only for the risk of getting nicked for trespassing, but 'cos the remaining active train lines up there are seriously electrified with absolutely thousands of amps, the graffiti artists should remember that before sneaking into the yards at night, as the power's on 24/7.
For future reference if you go back down there over the rd in Vulcan St John Morgan scrap metal owns most of Vulcan st he’s originally from greaty family of 16 kids the nicest fella you could wish too meet ask to speak to him tell him what you do and maybe gv you loads of info on what’s happening in the area or bramley moore ,

The Merseyrail line to Moorfields makes use of the old approach viaduct to the Great Howard Street Goods Depot as far as the Victoria Arch over the Waterloo Tunnel entrance. Then it descends down to the Link Line tunnel.
Would it be possible to get the old train lines running again.would be good for Everton BMD I know it would be massive costs but a lot of it is already in there to start with.
I watch your vids was wondering if you could do a comprehensive survey of the road and rail system for Liverpool to show how it has been successfully dismantled over the years to make it commercially cut off. For the rail to the docks for example Canada dock thro to commercial road sidings on to the electric line . This could have served Liverpool 2 . Peel holdings filled all this in with hard core so it couldn’t be used again. Their plan was to transfer all the logistics to the Manchester canal. Currently the docks is being used as a giant scrap metal storage facility and the new Liverpool 2 cranes mainly lie idle because the companies don’t like peels ida of double handling the freight. Apart from ACL who have always used the same dock as they do now all the new cranes are not handling any huge container ships because of this ,they all go south. The m62 57 58 are all unfinished motorways that stopped short of their original intended destination the moment we entered the common market. Together with beeching destroying the local railways as well. A map of all this could show how the powers that be along with Peel have decimated this city. Look at the new developments being built. Leeds street for one will stop any future use of Exchange station. It will be comical when Everton’s new ground is used. Utter gridlock. The tunnels from edge hill etc .all of them abandoned and waiting to collapse through neglect. This would never be allowed to happen in any other city yet it’s ignored.
The dead end was the entrance to the Tate and Lyle garage workshops ,later silver Roadways ,i served my apprenticeship at the bottom of Maddrell st at Diesel and battery services
@g2emedia1977 just to make sure they are fit for trains to pass over. We check the disused ones, to see if the vegetation or other elements have affected the structures integrity. A lot of them have tenants in, so we have to make sure they are safe for them also. Mad when I seen this video though, my writing is still on the wall at Maddrell Street 🤣
@@colinsmith3972 boss mate i was looking at climbing up onto one aswell but decided against it...i assume the tracks have been taken away when the bridges were cut?
@g2emedia1977 probably mate. I haven't been on top of the disused arches mate just the live track. From what disused lines I have been on top of though, they usually take all materials away so I'd guess so
It's truly disappointing that the council allowed the construction of houses, warehouses, and businesses so close to the current active railway track. In my view, it would have been far better to extend the old Exchange Station track to run parallel with the existing line. This could have served Headbolt Lane and Ormskirk services, while the current track could continue to serve Southport. By doing this, Exchange Station could have accommodated stations between Headbolt Lane and Ormskirk, while Liverpool Central and Moorfields could focus on Southport services. The track congestion between Liverpool Central and Sandhills is substantial, and reopening Exchange Station could significantly alleviate this issue. It's a real shame that the opportunity was missed, especially considering the building close to the tracks at 28:03, which would have been an ideal location for the much-discussed Vauxhall station.
That would mean passengers from Kirkby/Ormskirk would have to change, or walk, to get to Central. The congestion is more to do with platform capacity at Central, not frequency of trains: London Underground sees far more.
I believer that build 12:52, is the world record holder for the biggest all brick building? as brick is holding it all up, and not concrete or steal tat doing the holding work on the buildings structure ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
