Thanks for posting this. I have 15 hp mariner with the tiller shift. I absolutely hate it! Didn’t even know a conversion was possible. Going to give it a go this weekend.

Great info! I have a 2015, 15 hp Mercury with the tiller shift. Today took it out for the first time. I push the button on the side of the engine to put it into gear, but while the throttle handle turns from neutral to forward or reverse, the motor doesn't shift. When I use the throttle to go back to neutral, I find that I have to push the button each time I want to put it into forward or reverse, which I'm told I shouldn't have to do. Why doesn't it go into gear when I go from neutral to forward or reverse? Your wisdom is much appreciated. Thank you!

Hello and happy to see your video. Can i ask what size is the socket key used for the link?

I mean the square socket that fits there.

Well I did it, and it works. My particular model took a little more modification to complete the conversion but I got it done.

Question for ya kodibass, got a 150hp mercury the tach only seems to read rpms when the kill switch is on so it only reads cranking rpms. Turn the kill switch off and start the engine, tach stays at zero. Backlight remains on. Any ideas?

+Carl harris, Not knowing all the details, It sounds to me that you have the black / yellow stripe wire connected to the wrong ignition post, unhook the black/yellow stripe wire completely & see if it operates correctly, ( caution ) if you do this your engine will not shut off from the key switch "" But it should lead you to your problem. kodi

@@kodibassInsideoutboards thank you, hooked the tach directly to the stator and it works now. Guess the water cooled rectifier was intermitent.

Hey. Great video! I watched it last night and I'm back again this morning. I got a question from a subscriber and I told him to ask you, that you would probably know . It has to do with a mercury 9.8, I told him to ask you about his problem, that you had just posted this mercury video so it wouldn't be to far off topic, anyway, he replied back saying he was going to check the merc forums. You know what a pain that is, so I thought I would ask for him. Here is his ? { Hi. I am working on same motor at the moment. i am also rebuilding powerhead. I have a question and hope that you could help me out. I am used to work on johnson/evinrude motors and this is my first mercury. I am replacing piston pin needle bearings and took pin out of the piston, well out of both pistons. When i was taking pin out,i had to tap gently pin out, both came out easily. Now after i cleaned piston, pin and hole that pin is going in and started putting it back in Pin just slid inside piston by hand and now i am concerned. Is it normal? I have 6 pistons and 4 of them are very low hour parts and pin slide inside piston easy,by hand, some a little tighter than the others, but still,i can push the in by finger. Its my first mercury and i am used to johnson 9.9/15,there you need to press pin in ,they sit really tight and here it just slides in. Never thought that such old motor can have so close tolerance on the piston pin. I am afraid that i will put it together and after couple of hours will get knocking motor.
Could you please shed some light on this subject please?
Many thanks. } Anyway, I just dont have enough experience with Mercurys to help him out. I will relay your thoughts on this topic back to him. thanks T.O.O.

+TOO, Manual says to heat piston to 190 degrees prior to removal or installation of wrist pin. Also stated use a Arbor press to reinstall wrist pin (Most of the way) Builder says he removed "both" pistons & has SEVERAL others. All parts are machined matched @ OME,.. Basic rules of rebuild/re-Ring what comes out of a cylinder goes back in order removed/reinstalled ... If replacing pistons Always go NEW & TRUE . (have machine shop go size over & new pistons to match) In my opinion not knowing details, Most wrist pins should not just slip in''''''' If builder is swapping used parts around build will likely be inadequate . ((again not knowing DETAILS)) kodi
