Fantastic - raw, emotional, gritty. Can't wait to see the performance. Well done Matthew Bourne and New Adventures and thank you for the super long clip!
Saw this last night at the Lowry....stunning...and my god how hard the cast works! Standing ovation at the end and much deserved. Thank you to all involved.
Saw this at The Lowry, Salford this week, I was spellbound by the whole experience, the atmosphere created by the set/lighting/music, and the dancers!! So powerful, yet tender in parts, so skilled! Can't stop thinking about it! ❤❤❤
@@NewAdventuresOfficial The music is in my head every day and in my head I'm dancing it - it's a lasting joy! Juliet was so flawless, as we're all the dancers.
Prokofiev's been a favorite of mine for almost 60 years; I had a lot of his work on LPs, including complete recordings of "Cinderella" and "R&J" - which, alas, I had to give up when I moved to a smaller apartment (I still mourn the loss of my 700 records). The one live performance of "R&J" I saw was given by a touring company from New Jersey, with recorded music, on a too-small stage, in a small Vermont opera house. I was enchanted (and, of course, I cried at the end). Several years later, I found a La Scala production on YT with Roberto Bolle (my crush) and Misty Copeland and lost my heart again. The first time I saw one of Bourne's swans (though I had no idea who he was or why the swans looked as they did, because I'd never seen the traditional "Swan Lake") was at the end of "Billy Elliott" (another tear-jerker!) - I can only suppose that the movie was the introduction to Matthew Bourne for a lot of people. About a week ago, whilst browsing in YT, I came across a complete performance of Bourne's "Swan Lake" and decided, what the hell - why not? Matthew Bourne's "Swan Lake" . . . THIS was like being struck by lightning! Watching it was a profoundly moving experience, in great part for its openly expressed gay theme . . . "The love that dares not speak its name." Now, having watched a complete performance of the Bourne, and then viewing this rehearsal, I can see the connection to "Billy Elliott"; the ballet premiered in 1995, the movie was released a year later . . . I'd love to know how that last scene came about, and why the film people decided to use the Bourne rather than a traditional "SL" - was it simply because the Bourne was new and exciting - or was it a subtle hint, along with the shot at the end of Michael and his presumed lover, that Billy was gay? Curious, but in the end, it really doesn't matter. Bourne's "Swan Lake" is a masterpiece, in part, I think, because it is so straightforward in its depiction of male-on-male sexual attraction, an attraction that's doomed to failure. The fact that this was expressed so openly on stage, while it might have been uncomfortable for some straight people, had to have been liberating and encouraging for gay men. Apart from giving me a reason to let the tears flow, Bourne's "Swan Lake" impelled me to find more of his work on TH-cam, and I'm now working my way through everything that's available. I'm grateful to Matthew Bourne for daring to be different . . . .
I love anything Matthew Bourne
It gives me tingles and it's still a rehearsal! Sheer class!
