I saw the original production of Bourne's Swan Lake and was completely stunned by its power and beauty. Anyone who ever has a chance should try to see it.
I saw it at Sadler's Wells in the 90s and it was the most incredible dance show I had ever seen. I remember the way Adam Cooper moved was unlike anything I'd ever seen. its a breathtaking show.
Some years ago the French Rugby team mocked the male ballet dancers at the Opera Ballet so the dancers invited the rugbymen to come train with them. They gave up, couldn't keep up and ended up having huge respect for the dancers after that.
Very interesting. Men deserve to be artistically fulfilled dancers. I'm glad that these dancers feel so sacredly about performing this classic work, in whatever new manifestation.
They were all simply beautiful … and did look as curious, vicious, protective, serene, strong as the lovely, enigmatic Swan. I could go on. They were phenomenal 👌
I love seeing this...I hope there will be many more all male ballets...It is beautiful to see...they are beautiful...and the concept of male swans makes perfect sense.
Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake must have been conceived in the 90s. I remember seeing it in LA with my mother and she passed away in 2000. What a treat to have gotten to see it with her.
Saw this beautiful ballet at the Lowry Manchester just last night. I’m now a little addicted to learning everything about Matthew Bourne and this wonderful swan lake rendition. The last scene too in Billy Elliot. ❤️❤️
Viewing this again after having watched Bourne's complete "Swan Lake" and after seeing a short video about Matthew Ball in his Royal Opera days. I was especially struck by brief clips of his practice with his partner at 3:19-3:21 and 4:08-4:10 - truly breathtaking in their intimacy and in the genuine beauty of the two men . . . tugged at my heart . . . .
Matthew Ball is from the Royal Ballet and he often dances with his partner, Mayara Magri. They are wonderful together. He is very talented to make the switch to an all-male ensemble.
……it was the first version of ‘Swan Lake’ where the swans were portrayed as their REAL selves’, ie very vicious, horrible creatures’. I loved it when I saw it on stage several years’ ago. Also, it tied in nicely for me with the last scene in film, ‘Billy Elliott’. I still get goosebumps seeing that. It’s my favourite ballet, & I see it EVERY time it’s performed here, & have done do since I was a little, when my Mum used to take me. Due to see it later this year, performed by the AB. Can’t wait!
I love all of Matthew Bourne's programmes but this being the first blew me away and so pleased we saw the strength of male dancers, I do not want to see the classical Swan Lake anymore.❤
I’ve love this score ever since the I first heard it as a child, I have loved every production of Swan Lake I’ve seen . However THIS production felt like the first time I’d seen dance it was so New and Fresh It still effects me emotionally when I catch snippets of it. The power of dace is amazing!
An amazing video, amazing production, amazing dancers . . . . I've only seen snippets of the Bourne version, and I'm not knowledgeable about the story, so I was astounded to find that this an all-male version. What a brilliant idea - very like a high-wire act without a net. Bravo to Bourne for his faith in himself and his dancers. The homoerotic nature of it is so bold and yet fits perfectly with the story, while the young men dancing the leads are so natural and laid-back about the intimacy of some of the scenes that its possible to believe that's what Tchaikovsky had in mind. Many, many thanks to Matthew Bourne and his amazing dancers.
My parents loved music so grew up listening to it. I've seen the typical performances and then saw this version a couple of years ago. Wow. The power was unbelievable. I have to add that, on a humorous basis, it gives you a totally different impression of female ballerinas. After seeing them on stage in the toe shoes, and at the end bowing all graceful and demur.....after seeing they guys you realize that these delicate flowers are working their butts off, probably sweating like pigs under the hot lights, and that their "dressing room" is probably as rank as any football locker room. LOL
This is the only one of Matthew Bourne's works that I like, and, for a long time, the only Swan Lake that I liked. I find the classical original difficult to accept, except for the new Royal Ballet production.
Male ballet dancers will always conjure up a memory of my late dad one Christmas. He was watching the Nutcraker and got so bored with it he said: "Can't watch this anymore, nothing but a bunch a naked men dancers". So, my sister said: "Oh, then I want to watch it!". Well, guess you'd have to be there to see the humor of it all. LOL
love the misic of swan lake but always felt the ballet to be insipid. the little i see of this version absolutely takes my breath away !! hope to get the full show on you tube some day ...
Liam Scarlett's version of Swan Lake for the Royal Ballet is the only production that makes dramatic sense of the traditional story; it's truly beautiful - try to see it. I love everything Matthew Bourne does: Swan Lake and especially Sleeping Beauty.
This is such a radical new idea, should have happened before this. Great dancers like Nijinsky were limited to their solos, what a great idea. Sorry but the lunchbox is still distracting from the movements.
Please have the coutesy to rename the piece..swan lake was not written as a homesexual swan love affair. That being said I would enjoy seeing ballets written casting more men..their skill is captivating
In real life there are male swans. And Black male swans too for that matter. This is just another re- imagining of a storyline. Giving brilliant male dancers the spotlight.
Lol that’s such a typical threatened response, and utterly ridiculous…..it’s just dancing…..and a ball game. So I’m not going to say you’re loathsome, cos you’re not, you’re just a silly, overdramatic pearl clutching drama Queen😂😂😂
Matthew is very pretty & an amazing dancer, but i think a gay lead might have been more comfortable with the intimacy. (not to mention 'barefeet'. 😂seems bizarre comment for a dancer.)
I must say I’m a traditionalist so not so keen on this version, in saying that, they have beautiful bodies and are very talented dancers, would not pay to go and watch it, have seen bits and pieces of it on tv.
What is the story behind this ballet?? It's going to go but so far. What is the story??? SWAN LAKE is story about love and evil trying to destroy it. Changing it to something unacceptable at large will bring BIG condemnations.
This is just odd to me. Im not at all inspired by, or moved by, men masquerading as female figures. Im not saying swans arent male but the purpose of using them is because they exude a grace and beauty that is typically seen as a feminine quality. Swan lake has a story, not just a look. And im sorry but u cant exclusively use men in this production, and remain true to the story. Make a new one. This is as bad as Disney and their "inclusion by exclusion" practices for remaking classics.
I have seen Swan Lake before but what Bourne has done with it breathed new life into it for me. Having just seen this today i am more interested to see a classic version again. Art benefits from fresh interpretations which help keep it relevant.
@@seandoherty925 absolutely but it seems like everything done now is not to be inspiring or beautiful, it just has to be done opposite so as to seem different and "edgy". I love classics and id love to keep them as such. I have room for new and different! But im getting sick of the changes that are constantly being made that dont seem to make any real sense. Wonderful. As always. Great choreographer and great dancers.
