Would enjoy another visit to Monroeville Mall. I remember when it first opened. Believe it was the FIRST mall to be built is USA and largest air conditioned area at the time it was built. It held that ranking for several years before it was surpassed in size. Remember when trees where planted in the center space and birds where in display cages around the mall on lower level. There was even an ice skating rink! Visited mall in November 2018 when visiting family, quite different from when opened in the 1960's. Thanks for trip in memory lane.
There used to be so many people in the 80s, you could barley walk it was so packed at Christmas, I dont mean disrespect but I felt this was a sort of sad video for me but thank you for posting
That’s my Mall! I love the simple but convenient layout. I’m there almost every week if just to walk the areas and enjoy a lunch. The staff are kind and hospitable. I’m grateful it still remains. I love the trees too! Good job... Merry Christmas 🎄
I really enjoyed the video! I liked the Christmas trees all around inside the mall. I've been to the Monroeville Mall a number of times. I recall that there was an ice skating rink in the Monroeville Mall. I don't remember what year the ice skating rink was removed. I do remember that the skating rink had the WTAE 4 logo on the center of the ice rink, and that was really cool.
Our mall is so small, and not a lot of stores there. The one end of our mall was Sears, which was demolished and they’re building there a new Home Goods, TJ Maxx, a pet supply store and a department store, I think it’s Ross, I am excited about the Home Goods, I love shopping there! This was very nice. Beautifully decorated! Fond memories of this mall. My father was born in Delmont, PA (nine months after his parents immigrated from Italy). We’d make an annual trek from Erie (the family moved to Erie several years later due to job opportunities in the foundries) to visit the town and cemetery, then stop at the Monroeville Mall to shop and eat. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
The trees were donated by local businesses mostly, they have that Police Athletic League toy drive and trees were given out to local Police departments along with a bunch of toys to give to families in need, its a great event. The malls claim to fame is the movie of course and has recently been the site of a couple of shootings & large brawls which has hurt the mall for sure, I worked 13 years as a security supervisor there til the end of 2016 and the shoplifting will be the demise of many of the remaining stores, Sometimes I would stop boosters many times per day, the things that happen in that mall that never got out to the media is unbelievable, I like the mall and hope it hangs in there, just doesn't look promising at the moment.
It amazes me how dead the mall is now. On X Mas Eve the local news reporters would talk to all the last minute shoppers and there would be tons of people shopping. Now...it's dead.
Very nicely decorated but the mall is empty, is a dead place especially for christmas. I think is only a matter of time for that mall to be gone like the others, not even the zombies will be able to save the legendary Monroeville.

I find that half of the struggling malls are not really bothered to address basic maintenance. It usually is a mistake to as it generally repulses customers and prospective tenants and risks unsafe conditions or unplanned major repairs.

Love this mall, lived in Pittsburgh from 2001 till 2006 and went there all the time... I'm back near Philadelphia now but I miss the monroeville mall

This malls claim to fame was the movie "Dawn of the dead" filmed there in 1978. Nicely decorated for Christmas with so many trees.
