    This was my grandparents favourite place and where we scattered their ashes. Just by some Rocks by a waterfall. Thanks to you I can see why they loved it. X I have always wanted to do the full walk and after this now I will. Thank you for showing me what they both loved so much.

    After watching your videos for a few months now, one thing I'm noticing more and more lately are the drystone walls. I had to mention it after seeing the one at 4:54 and the ones at the end. Easy to take for granted, but they really are impressive. The amount of time and skill that went into making them all those years ago is crazy. Just gathering the stones in the first place would've been a monumental task, but to then assemble them so well that they last so long is amazing.

    As soon as I hear that piano intro I know I'm in for a treat here. This didn't disappoint. I haven't been in this part of the Lakes before. It looks so wild and rugged. A true wilderness of atmospheric beauty. Oh! that track down in the valley with the walls and mountains. It just absolutely stunning.

    Man, to have this whole place to yourself, away from crowds and in those conditions... I know wind and snow is can be brutal, but the nature looks way more spectacular wearing this dress than on any other blue sky day. It wakes up a different kind of feeling inside you.

    I was up there in Oct 2020 and yes, it was a bog fest! Did see a herd of red deer though. It was my first time in that area too and that's one of the biggest pleasures I get from hiking the Wainwright's - getting to see new places. Cheers again...

    As soon as I hear that piano intro I know I'm in for a treat here. Can you hear the motor bikes? This used to be calm and collected. BUT. NOW. A byway in the United Kingdom is a track, often rural, which is too minor to be called a road. These routes are often unsurfaced, typically having the appearance of 'green lanes'. Despite this, it is legal (but may not be physically possible) to drive any type of vehicle along certain byways, the same as any ordinary tarmac road. Welcome to Long Sleddale, mate.

    I have only recently discovered your channel and have become thoroughly addicted. Having just watched this amazing Longsleddale video, in the snow, the ice, the biting wind....and the views, the scale of the place, and most importantly to me, your few minutes of "why am I here/doing this in this weather/could still be in bed, etc...then to confirm your heart-felt love of the fells, in a few sentences which tugged so many of my own memories....poetry. Those who truly love the fells, those who feel the deepest of connections with being out there, whatever the weather, they know. They truly know.
    You don't seem to have visited the Howgills. You seriously must. Also the Borrowdale/Bretherdale fells, complete with as good a ridge walk as anything in the National Park. That's the Borrowdale close to Tebay, which is beyond beautiful. And the beauty of the area is magnified by it's being relatively unknown. Seeing anybody else would be a surprise.
    Loving the videos and will most certainly have a look at the photos you have for purchase.

    The far eastern fells is definitely on my list now, like yourself it's never been on my radar. I was in lakeland on Sunday with a warm up to get mountain fit for a new year ahead. 14 miles, Old Man via Dow Crag then Brim fell and Swirl How before hopping across the prison band down into Coniston via the mines. I didn't see a thing due to low clouds, -9 wind chill and strong winds but loved every second of it. I've donated a few quid to buy you a "coffee" but please do get a pint on me instead on your next outing. These videos keep me sane when I can't get out there myself. You're the best around on youtube Glenn, cheers 🍻

    This is one if those valleys in the lakes that it's like time has 'forgotten' the best part about these places are your away from the madding crowd 👍 the view coming down bates similarities to coming over Kirkstone towards Brotherswater 🤔i would have given the places with the eating crowd a miss too & probably bought something & sat in the car..more quiet 🙂another excellent vlog 👌

    Brings back many memories of the valley and walk, this was my very own local adventure playground as a boy, when I started work in Staveley I got myself a trials bike and rode Gatesgarth and Kentmere many times over the years, even over Harter Fell and up onto High Street in the summer.
    There is a difficult part along the road where there is a dog leg of stones layed vertical into the surface half way up Gatesgarth, on a motorcyle you have to keep going, if you stop you will fall off, on a mountain bike you have to push and walk it going up.
    There is a superb deep pool at one of the falls on the sprint, clear blue water and still quite cold even at the height of summer.
    I remember watching salmon swimming under Sadgil Bridge where I used to wash off my bike after reaching the metal road, we often got a drink of water at the farm.

    Hi Glenn. We have rented a cottage.. High Swinklebank at the top of Longsleddale at least once every year, for the last 12 years. We have therefore followed all possible local rounds in that time. The absense of footfall is remarkable. Turf instead of staircases, and sometimes a whole day spent without human encounters. There is something you experienced and commented upon on the track down from the Quarry and it is what draws us back. I love your content and wish I could spend longer in your County. Oh and remember when Wainwright charted the valley and it's head for us he got off the bus on the A6! Thank you for another wonderful upload. Btw if you hug the fence it's never too wet😉

    Decided a few years back to add walking all the Wainwrights to my bucket list. Don't get to The Lakes very often so am on 42 to date.
    I have read AW's books cover to cover at least twice and dip into them regularly, but it is your wonderful videos that have really pieced together in my head where all the fells are in relation to each other.
    I now have plenty of inspiration for which ones to do next when I am up in May. Thank you for bringing The Lakes so vividly to my living room 🙏

    Well you lucky man, I did the crossing to Tarn Crag across the bog, when it was warmer weather, and a full tarn up to the wire fence. I knew nothing of this tarn and bog when I set out. It resulted in a mild panic, and the use of the lower wire on the fence to keep me from being consumed into the peaty depths over maybe 50 metres traverse, quite unerving to be honest. As bad, was the off route from Tarn Crag down to Mosdale, and it's reedy squelching, path, yes cracking waterfalls on the return back to Longsleddle. An interesting walk.
    Saw you the other day in Grange Co-op, as you dashed out of the shop, didn't realise you had pulled in behind me in your van outside Grange Ambulance station.

    Terrific video as always! And that's all new ground to me too - I've never been up Longsleddale, never mind walked the tops around it and it looks like I've been missing out enormously. People often deride 'doing a list' but I think it's great that doing something like that not only gives you a goal and makes you get out when maybe you would have to push yourself to do so, but it encourages exploration of areas not on your radar. What a superb setting that valley is and you're right about that lane coming back down - just the u-shape of the valley, with the leading line of the wall and the track looks stunning. You can imagine that in all different light and seasons. Noted on the bog of doom though! One to do in frozen winter or a summer drought! Really enjoying these videos, thank you.

    Hi. I am really enjoying the Channel. Every night I watch a video and it is massively inspiring me to get back out there. Such a long way from Lincolnshire though! I wonder if you could give me your opinion on something please? Is the Lord's Rake and W WT a step too far for me and my lad of 10. I am a very experience Wainright bagger and my lad has done Sharp Edge, Scafell Pike and Corridor Route in recent years?
    Thanks
    Steve

    • @BlackCrag
      @BlackCrag  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much 😊 I'd be very wary of taking a child up Lord's Rake. Sharp Edge can be a breeze in dry conditions but rakes are always known to be very loose, steep and tricky in all conditions. I'm ultra cautious though. Maybe walk to the foot of the rake and decide at that point. Have an alternate route planned in case you decide not to go up.

  • @gileslaycock-brown7603
    @gileslaycock-brown7603 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a suggestion. Can you add date details to when you did the hikes? It may help novices to understand what the conditions are like at a particular time of year.
    BTW where's that review on the water purification system you promised? I'm still waiting to buy one for the warmer months in the lakes.
    Keep up the good work fella and looking forward to booking you for a photography session this year. I'm 5 of the hikes behind you BTW. My novice partner is buzzing off the routes so far. OS map app is well worth the money. I used to use "View Ranger" then it changed hands to "Outdoor active" (Not recommended at all).

    • @BlackCrag

    I would love to see more B roll and time lapses. I feel like they convay more of a story. For example at the start you mention your heading to the survey station, you could then time lapse / B roll to it and then tell us what is all about. More story telling.
    It feels rude to say this but some videos are really hard to sit though you talking for 37 minutes. If this is your style then obviously that fine but that just some constructive criticism. I only mean well and would love to see your channel grow.
    Also, I would 100% buy some prints if you had lighter photos and more greens. I have looked on your website and I couldnt find any.
    Thanks

    • @BlackCrag
      @BlackCrag  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback. I know you mean well and I do encourage all forms of feedback, but this could be problematic. Essentially I'd have to change my filming format back to what I used to do (and nearly killed me) as well as change my photography style entirely. The former I could potentially do if enough people are in favour (less talking and more B roll). The latter will probably never happen. I photograph what excites me and I create art that I like to look at. I can't force myself to photograph things that simply leave me cold emotionally.
      But I do thank you for watching and giving me your thoughts. Like I said, all feedback is very much welcomed here 😊

    • @nicmarlow6388
      @nicmarlow6388 ปีที่แล้ว

      wholeheartedly disagree with more B roll. I don't find it as nice to watch as him just having the camera in hand tracking where he is going. Watching B roll knowing he'll have to track back to go and get the camera gets a bit tiresome if you watch loads. I know he used to do this and it wasn't as much fun to watch (my opinion) I personally love his current style, it's engaging, great paced and he's such fun to watch. I say, keep the style you've got now, I think it's much better (and I feel we get more vids, better quality as we get to see his face and narration more too)
