In 2012, Matt Dyer was a 48 year old hiker who was looking for his next adventure. He felt a wave of excitement come over him when he saw an ad for a Sierra Club group hike into remote Torngat National Park in Northern Labrador. No. But I have in black bear territory an unbelievable amount. In daylight I might with an appropriate defense.. like a grenade or elephant gun.

@@adventuresgonewrong That's all. You are currently discussing how adept Polar Bears are at swimming. I can attest to this myself because when I was a child, my father, mother, and myself vacationed in Toronto, Canada. We went to the zoo while we were in Toronto and wee went to the Polar Bear exhibit. We went downstairs to observe the bears swimming in the pool. I was surprised at just how well that they could swim.
And that's just it. Can't be mad at a bear for being a bear.
“Oh we don’t need to hire a bear guard”. Almost all these stories have an element of complacency. And way too much inconsistency and loop holes in the communication and directives given by park officials. Glad to hear Matt survived and that the bear was not dispatched.
I follow a few channels that do caving accidents/ mountaineering.
And complacency absolutely kills. A quote to live by “better safe than sorry”
“That’s what the fence is for!” Pffft… It might be a mystery whether they were or weren’t shown the informational polar bear DVD, but jeez I would have thought at least a *few* of them had seen Jurassic Park…
Sort of…but don’t think the park service is responsible so long as the information on bears is publicly available, and at least mentioned…doesn’t hav3 to be a perfect bear training course. Any adult should know that once you go into the wilderness, the main person responsible for your safety is you. The park services and rescue will do their best, but they aren’t hovering over you or guaranteeing that you are always safe….if you want assurances of safety, no problem, but then stay home or go to the mall.
Even if a polar bear attack had never happened, or no bears have been seen in an area….that could change tomorrow, and as with driving a car, how far will we go to make thing “safe”….people die in car accidents in every day, and all of us wearing big helmets in cars would prevent some, but is it worth to make everyone wear them?
@@Lohanujuan You can add cave diving to that list of complacency kills, often the more experienced one becomes.. The second you lose all fear of being sometimes a 1/2 mile or more, and 200+ feet (at times) underwater with only the air sources on your back, and possibly with someone with you, you die.. I've had a number of friends die. Ignorance is bliss, they say.. But, complacency really can and will kill you just as quickly.. I can seriously promise most people that "dying doing what you love" is a lie by way of people still alive... Besides.. Dying is pretty easy.. The pain left behind if anyone likes or loves you is horrific.. Great post!
I agree. I hate it when they kill wild animals for being wild animals (not rabid, just wild) when people were stupid. Incredible injustice.
Thank you for emphasising that this group were in the bear's territory, and adding detail from experts about polar bears' curiosity - but especially for including Matt's empathy for these creatures. Humans have had such a vast impact on their environment, and as a result these polar bears face more obstacles than ever to their continued existence. They deserve our care and respect. Thank you for sharing this story.
Glad you appreciate those details. I think we can all learn from incidents like this and it's pretty incredible when people who survived these attacks can have compassion for the bears. They're just trying to survive.
I get it and understand "bear territory," but that's not always the case. There are plenty of incidents of bears leaving their territory and entering heavily populated areas. Bears will continue to travel further and further from their territory in search of food, mates and territory. Plus, polar bears have always faced obstacles due to a way they live. Their mainly solitary animals, go long spans between meals, and there's even videos of them swimming long distances for whatever the reason. Don't forget to mention the deadly battles between males for territory/mating and the fact that males will find a female mother polar bear with cub/(s) and will murder and eat the cubs in order to mate with the female and have his genes passed on. All we are is another meal that can actually fight back.
The whole planet is human territory. If bears don't like that fact then they should get their head blown off. Just sayin 🤷. Polar bears are CLOSE to the top of the food chain.... until they meet a human with a shotgun 😮😅😅!!

@@willatwood they're getting into more populated areas, because that's where they've been for thousands of years. And they don't exactly have an alternative. Their habitat keeps getting destroyed, it's hunger that makes them come closer to humans.
It's a similar thing as with sharks. Humans enter a predator's territory and act all surprised when the predator does predator things. Obviously I'd prefer if such encounters wouldn't happen, but they do, and it's not the fault of the animals.
I live in Alaska. You don't go around in polar bear country without 12 gauge shotgun.
I'm not sure one tent camps in polar bear country either. Seems a little risky. But that's me.
better than nothing but a 12 ga. is a little under powered for an animal that size. carry a .375 Holland and Holland rifle with open sights. Flatten a Griz or a polar bear instantly...If you have to have a shotgun, try to get a 10 ga. magnum loaded with slugs
@@bradsanders407 I live in rural Alaska. A 12 gauge pump shotgun is the most common protection against bears. I'm talking about local people, not hunters from Texas or wherever.

Fantastic video, most people don’t realize that a grizzly and a black bear are like baby kittens compared to a polar bear. It is without a doubt the worlds most fierce animal.
True, I don’t live anywhere near polar bears but have recurring nightmares about running into one. I will NOT be going on a hiking tour to see them, ever.
Quite a bit of doubt actually, and how do you measure fierceness in the first place? But even if you are only going by size, force, and persistence in hunting (or in fighting back) there are quite a few contenders: sperm whales, giant squid, great white sharks, orcas - they are all equal or even much greater size, and all very capable and strong predators too.
Grizzlies are not "baby kittens" compared to any bear.
Polar Bears are absolutely not THE most fierce animal. But are ONE OF the most fierce animals.
Wild animals are just trying to survive. They usually kill to eat. Man kills often for sport, sometimes for fun. I think mankind is the fiercest animal.
Thank you for this true story. I've met Matt several times over the years before this happened and once afterwards. I was always curious about what happened but it's rude to ask a person who was hurt and could've died to describe what happened. He was clearly changed by the horrible experience. I'm so glad that he's okay. He's not doing the law clinic downtown anymore and he said that he was moving up to Northern Canada. So I haven't seen or heard anything for a few years.
My cousin Richard was one of the trip leaders, and shot the flare gun to force the bear to drop Matt. Terrifying.
Wow way to go Richard! It must have been difficult to shoot the flare in those circumstances!

We stayed on the island of Svalbard, famous polar bear country, and you are actually obligated to have a rifle with you or a guide with a rifle whenever you leave the town 🤷♀️ The town was regularly patrolled and considered safe. But yeah, never ever go into polar bear country without a rifle or a guard 😅
One kid from a school trip actually got killed by a polar bear in Svalbard. Rethinking going there :( although it's on our whishlist

@@Bleh-rp2jr They "laws" or rules have changed in Svalbard since then I believe. It is one place I definitely want to visit when we hopefully go visit family from long generations again in Sweden and Norway, and i will want to explore Svalbard probably more then the previously mentioned.. I understand the somewhat territorial agreements that cover what I'd usually term as "tourists" from certain countries.. Pretty sure I couldn't bring any of my own firearms over there.. That would likely be a customs nightmare unless it could be mailed. Even so, I'd take an outfitter to get me where I am wanting to go who is outfitted properly.. Don't take it off you wish list! Looks seriously beautiful...

Matt Dyer has one of the best campfire stories of all time.
I lost my best friend to a polar bear attack in Svalbard, Norway in March 1995. She was only 22 year's old, and I miss her everyday, BUT she was in polar bear country before there was restrictions concerning being armed, but after the accident, there were new restriction and now you need to bring weapon. Even though the polar bear killed my friend, I do not feel anything else than that these animals are hunters and humans go into their territory, will always be seen as prey. Nowadays these animals are threatened by us humans, and they cannot hunt without the ice, that is continuing to melt. They are starving and just try to survive. R.I.P Nina ❤
Even if there was no restrictions the first law is called common sens, however if you aren’t accustomed to use rifles or guns this won’t help you….RIP your friend 😢

Norway is such a beautiful country, but of course polar bears can be dangerous. Hopefully the restrictions prevent other tragedies.

Thank you for the reporting it took to tell Matt's story. I can absolutely believe the back and forth of misinformation. I'm grateful for the wildlife photographers who capture large predators on film so I don't have to risk my life to see them. I can appreciate nature from afar.

This lady is one of the better channels I've found.. I don't always fact check, but early on, I sort of due, and especially if I've read or watched a story.. She is pretty SPOT ON, and when she isn't sure, she never hesitates include that it isn't a known fact, etc.. This is one of my new favorite channels... Yup, late finding it.. YT algos can surk, or they can surprise you..
Luckily the bear didn't come back, because bears sometimes just lay on their prey and eat them alive.

There is "generally never an attack involving any of the various predatory animals" (bears, lions, tigers, wolves, cougars and so forth) until an attack takes place! LOL!

I can see why they wanted to go there . They didn't do anything wrong, took precautions, except not knowing they were camping on a bear route and not hiring a guard. Glad he survived.
They really did all they were required to do to hike in that area, according to Parks Canada. It’s surprising the park doesn’t require bear guards.

I love the far north but even with a bear guard, find the idea of camping with polar bears incredibly intimidating, right up there with tigers
When that bear wouldn't leave, no way would I have settled to sleep in a tent. That bear was waiting, and was very determined.
PS. I hate it when after horrific incidents, people say things like, "But this never happened before". It only takes ONE time. I have given up a paid hotel reservation bc the room was unsafe (a broken ground floor balcony door right by the woods), and zero regrets. I wasn't thinking of wildlife, I was thinking serial killers. Don't take chances, death is a real thing.
@@raphaellavictoria01I 100% agree with you! To me it was obvious that that bear was just waiting for it's moment to snatch one of them. That's the only thing I don't understand about their decision to just go to sleep all together. Sounds insane to me.

@@adventuresgonewrong why would anyone even think the bear had "malice". People are nothing to them. they are the undisputed kings of the north. Apex predators. they will simply tear you apart to see if there's anything good inside. Anything that moves up there is theirs if they can catch it.....

I actually met Matt a few years ago on a trip to Baxter State Park. Really nice guy and got to hear his story, although he didn't go into too much detail.

I'm glad Matt survived. I'm not a hunter and I love animals but even in Coastal Virginia I never go into the woods without a legal firearm. We have an occasional black bear around here and they are normally not aggressive but I would feel terrible if we did have a problem with one and I couldn't protect my 2 canine companions, much less myself. When something like Matt's attack happens you normally hear how rare such occurrences are, but rare is often enough for me to prepare. Also, electric fences can easily go to ground if a weed or something touches it and the fence becomes useless. Polar bears are certainly scary predators but I hope they can adapt to the changes occurring in their environment. Thanks for posting this interesting video.🙂
This is what a rational gun person sounds like. As opposed to all the ridiculous Rambos on here talking about bear rugs as if authorities would ever allow a polar bear killed in self defense to become a rug (or any polar bear for any reason).
No amount of electric fence would make me feel safe!!! I would want like a MILLION flare guns!!! Who am I kidding, Polar Bear country just isn't for me, I think?!
Living in The Netherlands and can only watch a polar bear or any bear in a zoo. But after reading about how they behave I know you do not want to cross path with a polar bear ever..So I am really surprised these hikers have the courage to pitch a tent in their habitat....without absolute safety precautions. Great upload🎉
They did communicate with the park officials quite a bit though and they did what they were told to do for safety. In fact they went above and beyond what Parks told them to do. Where they camped is the big point of contention though.
Im in Mexico, so black bears are very common here. We have a museum near my hometown, and they have taxidermy of black bears, next to Grizzlies and Polar. I thought i had a good understanding of the dimensions of bears. Nope, a black bear is closer to my dog than anything else. Grizzlies and Polar bears are just massive. I love hiking but unless there was a cabin or something, i wouldn't want to risk it at all. A bob cat can definitely fuck my shit up, I'm not gonna risk it.

The only Bear country that I would go camping in, is if they are stuffed bears. Really excellent storytelling of mats frightening injury with the polar bear. I agree with Matt, we should respect nature and realize nature does what nature does, and not out of vengeance for anything.

They scratch trees to scarpen their claws. I've walked by claw marks that were impressively high up the tree. Best not to think about it as you keep walking.

@@adventuresgonewrong Definitely go for quality over quantity if you dont have much time. TH-cam will suffer from automated content more and more - thats an advantage for you because you are the real deal - also due to your location.
Casey Neistat has New York (coolness, status, prestige, ... overall social comparison), you can have rough wild northern nature (adventure, romanticism, storytelling ...). Try to represent your surrounding and expand with time to Alaska and the Canadian Rockies.
Engage your existing audience by asking them what stories they want to hear (make polls). You can make a live stream discussing the results, connect with similar TH-camrs etc..
Last thing: Like I already mentioned: If you dont have the time, take this as your advantage and focus on the quality of a video. There are channels who have a dozen videos, but have over one million subscribers. Thats the other extreme compared to Casey, but you get my point.
Really last thing (ha ha): Your channel itself has to tell a story, which is shaped by the videos you upload. So if a video topic does not help to tell such a story, do not make it.
So you can adapt to an already existing demand. To find out what demand there is, just ask your community and or try things out. You can delete them later, if they do not work out as expected.

I have an absolute and consistent fear of death and somehow stumbled on your channel. The end of this video brought me to tears, though I don’t precisely know why. Something about the lack of intent of harm coming from the environment, nature is just being what it is and equally hoping to exist a little longer. Anyway- I love this channel and look forward to watching more

Ian Mccormack testimony ( original one ) on TH-cam is a good one . He came very close losing his life but survived and actually travels around and talkes sbout his experience.
Love your story telling. Love how you add the great backgrounds and all the extras things too. I could listen to you all day. As for the guy in the story he is one very lucky man to survive that. It’s cool too that he doesn’t hold anything against the bear. I respect him for that.

My limit is camping within feet of my car, ha. It is easy for me to say now, no way would I go there. If I were physically capable? I hope I would still make good choices, but who knows. Your storytelling is wonderful, especially the compassion you convey. Thanks for your channel.

I live in New Zealand. We have no bears, but even we know the old saying about how to survive bear encounters: brown: get down, black: fight back, white: say goodnight. Stay out of polar bear territory.
They are supposed to work
However they are not full proof.
I’ve seen videos of bears being sprayed with the repellent but just continue with their attacks and kill people.
You have to be out of your mind to go there without adequate security. Further, if security is such an issue it’s probably not the place to go for recreational activities.

There are so many bs hype channels who sometimes fill in the blanks with their own supposition, and churn things up for "likes" and "subs"... This Lady seems trustworthy as heck! There are enough camp grounds that aren't dangerous.
When people unfortunately go when the possibility of encountering bears, it quite often doesn't end well for the bears.
This is their home and they don't deserve to be put in the position where they can be killed just because people think they can go wherever they want.
Stop making your homes where wildlife live. They deserve to live in peace without people always horning in on them. 🇨🇦

Matt stood up in the camp and watched the bear for an extended period of time.
Guess what? While Matt was watching the bear, the bear was watching Matt. This was a targeted attack.

All self-defense equipment come with instructions, but non of them tells you how long time you have before the bear gets you. Only bear knows that.

You are an exceptional storyteller.
It feels like its better to be the expert then to trust the expert. If I was anytime going on a adventure I should be able to know how to behave and how to protect myself. I feel a lot of adventurous people do romanticize wildlife and even when well trained seem to have a naivety about them. Like people petting sharks and stuff. But this proofs it again, be your own expert especially nowadays you can get so much information so easy.
If I’ve learned anything from theses stories, it’s to really research everything when you book through a company.
Live in black bear country but I hike with my dog. One day we started to go up a hill on one of our usual trails. Nice day, bird’s singing, etc. my dog stopped and refused to go up the trail. That is completely unlike her. Nose in the air and she led me away to the other side of the park. I trust her. Hiked the same trail last week and we had a great time.

I saw a study of predators where scientists had food locked into a box, and polar bears got into the box 80% of the time. They were determined to be the smartest predator of all, because they could figure out the different ways to open these boxes and get at the food.
they don't hibernate and live in a brutal environment, so they have to be smart!
I had a marine bio instructor in high school who told the class, "you know, polar bears are one of few predators who will actively seek out and eat human prey." Some classmates said "aww but they're so cute." "They'll rip you apart," the instructor said. "But they're so cute" the classmates said. I believe he meant polar bears will look for humans to eat as opposed to just killing them in moments of opportunity, which other predators might.
Cute shmute, they will 1000% hunt a human down. There are many stories of them not only hunting local hunters, but stalking them.

Lol grizzlies don’t always eat people when they run into them. But if they do, that and stalking is incredibly rare. I came face-to-face with a grizzly in my yard and it just wandered down the meadow to roll in the field. 😆

There’s always a risk in anything you do, but saying people should not go out in bear country isn’t realistic. Especially for those of us who live in bear country. You just have to be prepared. I came face-to-face with a grizzly that walked right thru my property a few years ago. Nothing happened, all was fine, and it went on it’s way after sniffing things out. They’re not all out to kill and eat us. In fact most will run away. But when you’re talking polar bears, people have to be extremely vigilant. I wouldn’t go out in polar bear country without an armed bear guard or in one of those massive tall truck that do the polar bear tours!
@@adventuresgonewrong Polar bears are known to think humans are prey, which of course we are, so agree with you I would not go anywhere there are polar bears unless on one of those high bus type things and wouldn't be sure about even staying in that area in a hotel lol lol ..... I know i am prey lol

It is absolutely absurd that the Canadian government forbids firearm possession, particularly high-powered pistols, for personal self defense in its vast and remote areas in the north. Had Matt possessed such a weapon when he observed the silhouette above his tent, it is the bear, rather than Matt, who would have enjoyed the gash to his neck, and the entire tale would have resulted in a memorable anecdote and comfortable foot rug rather than a life-altering disability. Ottawa and Toronto are riddled with fools.
Ever watched shows about policing in the north? The more guns in the hands of those who are either alcoholic, addicts, abusers, libertarian autocratic types cause police forces to be stretched to dangerous levels. Not everyone should have a gun no matter where they live.
If that is the issue, the rational response to to remove and isolate (jail) the very small number of miscreants incapable of enduring their liberty responsibly. Rendering the overwhelming majority of the populace, who suffer no such personal defect, defenseless in their own country is patently irrational (albeit perfectly consistent with the highly concentrated personal idiocy of the current PM).
Alternative: We are not the only apex predator. Stay away from them.
