There are some secret menus for this radio with radio off. Hold the PTT and Function key 1 together turn on is one secret menu. And also do the same however with the Function Key 2. Your welcome. 😉

It is being tested into a 50 ohm resistive load but in fact it MAY have been tuned at the factory into the rubber duck antenna which is not 50 ohms resistive. Therefore the measurements are not valid.
The spectrum measurements should have been made by transmitting with he HT, and using matched pickup antennas on the analyzer. If testing on 2 meters you use a matched 2 meter antenna to measure the fundamental power, and to measure the 3rd harmonic you switch antennas on the analyzer to a matched 440 antenna.
    Be careful drawing conclusions, folks.

Is “scrambling” the same as encryption though? These radios scramble through frequency inversion, which is an old, well documented technique, which also happens to be very easy to unscramble with little effort. Curious if that would still fall under the FCCs rules. I could argue that DMR is “obscuring” the transmission as well. If I have an analog radio, digital transmissions are obscured. Sure, more people have radios capable of decoding DMT, but if you have a K5 and “scramble” the signal, I can unscramble it with another K5 through simple brute force. Just playing devils advocate here, curious what your thoughts are.

Good review Dave. Mine came setup for EU. Hold the PTT and top function button and you can set the frequency lock to FCC and it won’t TX outside the ham bands. Mine was clean on 2m, 70cm was out of spec by 6db. The spur was about .0046 watts. I tuned a second radio to the spur’s frequency and could not hear the Quansheng. Agreed they need to filter it, but the spur wasn’t detectable by another radio a foot away so I can’t say it’s interfering at .0046 watts.

You omitted to say that to access those menus you have to turn the radio off first, then turn it on while pressing the top side button and PTT simultaneously. You can choose to transmit on the US FCC frequencies, European, British or none; just select the band you wanna transmit on right up to 500 Mhz.

Does the scrambler work? I tried it, but it doesn't kick in. Defaults over to "off". Used both types of software and the front panel. too. Looks like an unlocking situation. It's already in it's third generation. USB-C is now removed. Ordered an additional one for $20.26.

The backlight on this radio stays on while scanning and there seems to be no way to turn that off. This irks me so much.....Such an oversight. I tweeted Quansheng about it. They said the demand is low so they won't be providing firmware updates for now but will let us know later.

  • @daytona1212

Update the firmware. The latest version is K5_2.01_26. That will fix some minor issues like, The monitor is now turned off when you change the channel, Recieve quality on the airband, and fixes a error some people seem to get when they enter DTMF codes. BTW, in the firmware package there's a driver installer. Do not install it if you already have a Kenwood cable that works with Chirp.

The transmitter in that rig drives a coax connector, and the chassis is intended to be the "ground." In normal use the rubber duck antenna's load is probably way off from 50 ohms and the effectiveness of the rig is partially dependent on the user holding it in his/her hand and coupling their hand to the chassis.
The designers probably took this into consideration and tuned (or broadband designed) the output stage to be most effective with the rubber duck HELD IN SOMEONE'S HAND. To test it into a 50 ohm load like Dave did very likely resulted in invalid readings. I would take with a grain of salt both the power output and the spurious signal levels.
Dave should know this, being an electrical engineer.

Harmonic suppression is a pretty basic regulation requirement in any country. The manufacturer must know this because In neighboring Japan, harmonic suppression regs are tougher than ours. They need to put in a low pass filter for the 2 Meter and 70 Centimeter bands if the manufacturer hopes to meet exceed the 60 dB suppression requirement.

I wish we had seen the end of SMA-RP bt now. It seems like it stems from an FCC ruling back in the 90's in a stupid attempt to stop people hooking up a high gain antenna to their wi-fi routers. Needless to say that it served no purpose whatsoever and had the unintentional outcome of polluting the sphere of radio with yet another connector standard.

AM Airband receive is badly distorted. CTCSS and frequency scan a great feature. My unit cost me $AUD48 including shipping. I needed a scanner, that's why I bought it, but am terribly disappointed by Airband as I conduct tours at the local Airport Historical Aircraft Museum, weak AM is more readable, but at an airport, i found removing the antenna and using my finger, reception not as distorted, but was still distorted. I think they simply de-tuned the FM discriminator for AM, it definitely doesn't have a proper AM detector. It also doesn't have as "S" meter, so, not ideal in transmitter hunting.

You tested, found it out of spec, yet call it a "nice little radio" and promote it as "feature-rich." These harmonics will interfere with TV channels, military aviation and even garage door openers.
