      Agreed. Extra class Ham here also. I find his videos to be funny, yet informative, as I'm relatively new to GMRS. I look at GMRS as yet another opportunity to learn more about radio science, propagation, etc., but also have fun while doing it. I can do that with both Ham and GMRS, but sometimes I like the informal and laid back nature of GMRS.

      Another Extra Class ham who came in the old license way via Novice, Tech, General, Advanced then Extra and learned the code of 5, 13 then 21 wpm I'm also on yes, CB radio and I'm sure many sad hams will poo poo that. I just ordered a GMRS radio and will get my license for that too. I just love the radio hobby and meeting folks.

      @@theapplecalypse It would probably take an administrator of the FCC site a whopping 2 minutes to type a 35 in place of a 70 in their system. Why for the love of Xenu don't they do it? Because GMRS has become more popular and people are buying the licenses at the price gouging of $70. When it slows down, they'll probably lower it to encourage more people to pay. Regardless of whether you wait or not, the price will still be too high.

    We (Jamaican Caves Organisation) use GMRS radios here in Jamaica for communicating from top to bottom of deep shafts (>100m). The wavelength is short enough that it bounces off the walls, even around corners, giving pretty good range. When we bought them, we just had to pay a fairly small amount for a permit. No mention of call signs, but as we've never heard anyone else on frequency on the surface, doesn't make much difference.

    It would be great if you could do a few use cases of setting up a group of radios for prepping, family or group. I am looking at the channels and trying to program my UV-9Gs but unsure if some of these settings would help us use the radios much easier. For instance can I use the Repeater channels on these devices to help eliminate extra 'noise'?

    Thanks for the info, Randy. I live in Canada, where no licence is needed to use GMRS, but it is limited to 2 W of transmission power, and no repeaters are allowed. Do you know if it is legal to use Q-codes from amateur radio (e.g. QTH, QRP, QRO) on GMRS/FRS?

    • @TheNotaRubicon
      @TheNotaRubicon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      In the U.S. you can use any kind of codes you want on GMRS.. But be careful, because if you do, everyone will laugh at you. GMRS is meant for normal people talking normally.

      If you're handy with a soldering iron and know the difference between a microphone and a speaker, you can probably turn *any* two radios into a full repeater system. I picked a couple of cheap GMRS radios to build mine. Yeah. I have to do more soldering, but it's fun for me. Good luck with yours!

    Thanks for the video Randy. So as I was watching and thinking about repeaters I had a novel thought....does not happen often......If a repeater is made from a receiver and a transmitter, does the receiver need to be a GMRS approved radio....I mean you can receiver GMRS legally on any radio...but does the receiver on a GMRS repeater need to be an FCC approved GMRS radio....It is sort of blowing my mind......69, Steve

    • @TheNotaRubicon
      @TheNotaRubicon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I am neither a lawyer, nor an FCC rules expert, but based on my understanding, any radio can receive anything, however the _transmitter_ is supposed to be FCC Part 95 Type Accepted...

    • @stevecolby6505
      @stevecolby6505 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@TheNotaRubicon This is what I was thinking too.....so the "best ham radio in the world"....the UV-5R could receiver while a UV-5X transmitted on a simple GMRS 5 Watt repeater using a ($46 on Ebay) Surecome SR-328 controller to connect the two. A legal GMRS repeater could be built for under $100.....might make a good future video? However by the time you did it right and bought a duplexer, a Retevis RT97 ($369 on Amazon) would likely be a better, more elegant choice. Anyway love your channel. 69 again, Steve
