- Hirschsprung disease occurs when a baby is born without enough nerve cells, called ganglion cells, in their intestines and can’t pass stool on their own. This can cause severe constipation and inflammation, known as colitis, and must be fixed by surgery. My newborn boy was diagnosed with this after 48hrs post birth, he did not have any bowl movements or pass any meconium. He underwent surgery, and had 6cm of his colon removed (pull through method). He was in the NICU for 10 days afterwards. He had to have a trip to the Pedi ER for Colitis and a UTI (due to placement of catheter during surgery). He spent another 5 days in the children’s hospital, but He is now 3 weeks old and doing well. He has irrigations 3 times a day and is on oral antibiotics.
Some of the scariest times of my life. To anyone going through this with your newborns, my heart goes out to you. It will eventually get better, slowly… but it will get better.

My nephew have this, he is now 11 days old, too pitty because he has colostomy bag in his side. And it's very hard to find colostomy bags in our area.

Oh guys I have a little one who is gane be 3years soon and still suffering with constipation and not passing stoll by him self.he is on alot of laxative medication and wash out two times a day..very long journey my God make it easier for him I wish I see him grow out of it and be a normal Little child who injoys his life.

Sorry this is probably a silly question, but how were they able to diagnose it? My daughter is 3 y/o and every dr has just prescribed laxative for her to take daily since she was a year old.. and it really sounds like she has this issue.
Did your baby have any bouts of colitis after surgery? I feel like my baby’s tummy feels bloated like it always was before surgery. I am planning to call his surgeon in the morning since he is spitting up more too. I just saw your comment and my baby is the exact age as when you posted this comment. It’s nice to relate to someone.

28, Stool is always stuck at the rectosigmoid junction. With digital stimulation stool and gas can descend. It often takes hours. Also, gas often escapes without me feeling it until after.
How is it now

My daughter has a history of Hirschprung disease. She'll be turning 20 in May and is pregnant. She's still not ok yet. Any side effects during her pregnancy or after? Worried mum.

...she's been taking medecine for 2 months.we got refered to a surgeon for a test anus x-ray..o burium eczema..I don't know what exactly the test called.shes got small anus too.Dont know what to do..were not done yet the test..Dont know we're to get enough money for you baby..Lord help me find ways to get through..please..

Siti Bazla Kamilah it is a low possibility, however if the disease runs through the family it is a probability that the baby will have it.
hi, I have a child with hirshsprungs who's 4 years old his had surgery but still has a lot of constipation and bowl issues. @@aghafoor9868 hi, I'm 20 and I did the surgery when I was 9, I still have bowel movement issues but I use dulcolax every two weeks. It's a really good laxative

My son is 14 and is being tested for this. He almost died 3 months ago. Needed 3 blood transfusions because of a GI bleed. We never knew he had this.
U didn't know about this disease? Gi bleed means?...ur son suffered from entire colitis? From which age he suffer from the disease? Ur answer will make help for me
I have this but I have never met another person in real life with this and there's not a lot of research where I live.. when I was born, they barely knew what to do with me. It may be more common now, but medicine is behind in some parts of the world.
Did you know that doctors in the 70's believed that only boys got this condition? Now lots of women in the 40's to 70's are getting diagnosed. I'm one of them.

The ganglion cells not being all the way ready and spreading over time might be why babies of course need diapers for a couple years. Just a guess.
