- In this video I show how to scrap a microwave.
I go step by step, breaking down how much money in scrap each piece is worth and how much scrapping a microwave will make you scrapping every part versus just selling it as shred steel.

Quick questions, how long does it take you to strip a microwave fully? When you take the cost of labor into account, is this even worth bothering with?
@@PerilousPaddy well as a hobby scrapper I’m not concerned with my time. But I’d say anywhere to 20-30 to completely break everything down.

From Wiki... There is also beryllium oxide in the ceramic insulators of most magnetrons. If the insulator cracks or is broken, that dust is highly toxic if inhaled. If you want a nice magnet, there are safer ways to get one. Leave the magnetrons alone.

Me too!
What are your expensive hobbies?
Thank you for being a big supporter of my channel, I greatly appreciate it.
@@scrapitall200 my pleasure. Thank you for making the videos to show everyone. My most expensive hobby is gold from e-waste. I spent a bunch to get the proper equipment to get started. Thankfully it has since paid for itself. I still love stripping random stuff. It's relaxing for me. For instance this weekend I processed several months worth of gathering ram chips from computers. It made me about $240 I also spent a bunch of that time to recover about $4 worth of copper from CPU fans. I hate selling the tiny motors at 09 a pound. It may as well be shred. My other hobby is polishing rocks. I did one this weekend turned out very pretty.
You are saving gold bearing components. Don't find a refiner. As long as you use common sense you can do it yourself. I am still learning myself. I learned the most watching Omega geek 64. Plus he is a friend that got me into the rock polishing with mikes lapidary channel. I suggest start small build your confidence then start making some cash. Be safe. The biggest issues are when dissolving the base metal. That's not something you want to breathe. The next is when dropping your gold from solution. Hold your breath. It's not bad just watch others do it before you try yourself. My first gold recovery was .015 my last was 4.83. Takes doing it to get used to it
Thanks a lot of good information where can I get a close price list of materials I know it changes with the wind but is there a average price list I can go by some where

I am scrapping my first microwave. I have not removed capacitor or transformer, yet, from shell. I am very nervous abot the beryllium. Any advice on that?
Hi. Thank you for watching.
I would leave the capacitor in unless your scrap yard will give you a better price than shred for them.
I’ve done quite a bit of research and manufacturers haven’t used beryllium in microwaves for a very long time, too expensive. Now they use a mixture of chromium and aluminum oxide.
What I do just to be safe just in the off chance it is beryllium, I wrap it with tape. Beryllium is only dangerous if it’s inhaled into our lungs, so as long as it’s not broken into fine particles that can be inhaled, it’s safe to handle. Now I’m not saying my research is definitive truth, but I feel confident.
You could take the magnetron to your scrap yard and ask them what they’d pay for it as is.
Hope this was helpful to you.

I have taken ( many , many ) of these to pieces ..... often the value of a WORKING part greatly exceeds the metal scrap value ! ! ... so .... the magnets are useful stuck to your fridge / cooker to store utensils , and placed into a plastic spray can top , screwed onto the end of a broom pole , can be used to pick up nails / screws in the workshop ! ... the electronic parts are MORE VALUABLE to reuse if left WORKING ! the transformer is MUCH more valuable , working , as you might make a ( dirt cheap ! ) spot welder ( see videos ) , the turntable synchronous motor makes a good Santa rotator for your Christmas tree , and the EHT diode makes a good Zener diode ( ? ) .. even the plastic feet can be reused ! ... of course the steel case is total scrap , but you will get MUCH more value ( reusing / reselling some parts ? ) .... ( tried - n - tested ) ....... DAVE™🛑

The way you handle a magnetron was very dangerous. Never use caution when taking them apart. Some, not all, contain beryllium. If that ceramic band is cracked or scratched, it could release just enough particulates that you could breathe in and cause really bad things to happen from berylliosis such as pneumonia and even lung cancer.
