It’s odd to think that the Brandenburg Concertos went from essentially being forgotten and stuffed into a junk drawer for over a century to being fired into deep space as an example of the best that humanity has to offer.
For real !?!?! woow, and now they are so famous, I coudnt imagine having to miss Bach superb music like these beautiful pieces. Who knows, in our lifetime we might find some more hidden works of Bach and people like Mozart. I would LOVE that.
For those who don't know about the story behind Bach's Brandenburg concertos. In 1721, Bach composed six “concertos for various instruments”. He dedicated them to a German nobleman and sent the manuscript as a gift, hoping to land a job as the court composer in Brandenburg. The nobleman never replied. Bach eventually took another job in Leipzig, where he lived for the rest of his life. Bach had send his original and there were no copies. The 6 concertos were lost for 130 years. They were never performed. The manuscript was eventually sold for about $20 and shelved in a library. The Brandenburg Concertos sat there until 1849, when they were discovered and published for the first time. Thank god.

Danke an Netherlands Bach Society! Sie zeigen uns immer wieder das Wunder, wenn Menschen im Gleichklang und Harmonie gemeinsam Wunder erschaffen.
@2:45 I find that episode one of the most intriguing in the whole repertoire of Baroque music... it is the most sublime duet exchange between two solo instruments when suddenly we get a suspended note from the other soloist and suddenly the explosion of energy from the violin like we've never heard before. Then those dissonant intervals between the recordings! Truly an exceptional composition.
What luxurious sound! The quality of this recording is unbelievable. There does not seem to be any clipping of the frequency extremes. The performance is vigorous, lively, and unforgettable.
Clipping, no, but it sounds 'washed' to me, and it is produced well enough I could toss that up to the room instead of a tech. The lead violinist is incredible, but he's conducting, and that steals something from the acoustic delivery.
One of the most beautiful masterpiece ever composed for the recorder. The music of angels standing in front of God. Thanks to NBS for this amazing performance!
Hi - I'm Robert from the UK - in the early 1970s I was part of a student ensemble which played this piece in a charity concert at St Mary's College, Strawberry Hill, Twickenham - I played first recorder (nowhere near as fast as this wonderful band) and it was one of the musical highlights of my life (now aged 73) - Bach is a continuing obsession in my dotage - I am trying to get to grips with the Art of Fugue - for any other Bach obsessives out there, please listen and watch the video of this by the wonderful Netherlands group - it is so beautiful and inspiring
I love their energy. I always see that especially between the strings in these recordings, how they look at each other for cues and communication throughout the piece. I love when you're performing with people like this and you have so much fun while doing so. You can tell that's what's going on here.
His name is Shunske Sato, he is the leader of the Netherlands Bach Society, he's indeed a very good violinist, I recommend to listen his interpretation of the Bach's violin sonata no.3 and partita no.2.
You should listen to their Vivaldi's four seasons, if you haven't yet. Totally refreshing rendition, top notch. Haven't heard any better version yet. th-cam.com/video/0FP9N2SbWn4/w-d-xo.html
I've heard this played by many different ensembles and this is the best version of this solo I have ever heard. I used to teach this solo on guitar so I know every note and this knocked my socks clean off!
This is my favourite of the Brandenburg Concertos .Music doesn’t get any better. This is everything. Every emotion. Even the ones we don’t have words for. Truly spellbinding! Thank you Netherlands Bach Society.
In 1952 at Manchester University I played this with Jolyon Dodson one of the recorders. The Alderley Edge Gazette wrote that we "played with exquisite sweetness..." I was so proud!
Heard so many times before, but never ever had I heard THIS luminous and vital Brandenburg concerto before... What a group of lively and enlivened musicians for All of Bach! Sato and the Netherlands Bach Society revitalize this beautiful opus with such magic, vitality and gusto like a novel creation that at the same time lifts you from the ground and grounds you while the soul twirls in utter joy ...Gracias...
What an extraordinary performance! What a great ensamble! Just beauty everywhere. The concertmaster is a genius with all the music in his head. Thanks so much!
12:03 is such an emotional part for me; not only is it insane as hell and easily one of the most virtuosic moments in history, it remains emotional and dramatic at the same time and that violinist {I'll be doing more research on him!} portrayed Bach's genius very well.
Bach, Bach and Bach forever!! He is...Er ist unser Vater Johann Sebastian Bach. And the best Father play by Nederlands Bach Society. Grandi tutti. Sato excellent as well as all of you. THANK YOU!! Dank u, heel erg bedankt!
Remarkable and outstanding performance that brings fresh insight into Bach's great masterpiece. Applause for the whole joyful, interconnected ensemble and especially for the virtuoso Shunske Sato. Thank you for sharing!
Simply PERFECT! Interpretation, sound and video recording, musical and video direction.... For sure you made Johann Sebastian (and all his friends) so happy in heaven, where he is now.
Gorgeous interpretation. The rubato phrasing of the violinist in the first movement is pure gold. And the dynamics build and recede to match the melodic flow. Full of passion throughout.
Aldous Huxley’s - ‘Island’ brought me here. Happy to be here and read everyone’s more passionately knowledgeable comments of the quality of this piece.
I absolutely love Sato’s interpretation of the piece it’s one of my favourites! I’ve actually been invited back to my old school to perform this piece and it’s next week! Not playing it as fast as Sato tho cuz my fingers just can’t move that fast lol. Hopefully it goes well!

Mijn droom is ook om eens een concert van jullie bij te mogen wonen van Bach. met dezelfde hoofd violist. Wat is deze man onwijs goed, hij is meesterlijk !!!
I often wonder if Bach heard his works played with such perfection. After all, the population was much smaller, musical instruments economically were not within the reach of most of the general public, and so naturally the talent pool to draw from must have been much smaller than today.
This relaxing classical piece is like a soothing balm for the soul. 🎶✨ Close your eyes, let the music wrap around you, and feel the stress melt away. Pure serenity! 🌙💫

Great performance! As a recorder player myself, I had to laugh when I saw Sato make that smirk 2:45 going like: "Sweet little solo guys!" and then he goes mental on his part haha. That being said the recorder part is played beautifully and is pretty challenging at a speed like this.
This approaches one voice per part. Very nice treatment. I found myself cheering Mr. Sato on during his solo on the third movement. Really sweet treatment!!
Best description of this piece in the notes ever i've played the recorder part since I was 12 (I'm 72) Lead violin (and I believe the conductor) has no chin rest.

Agreed
The version with Arthur Davison and the Virtuosi of London with David Munrow and John Turner on the recorders are electrifying.
Maravilloso...se trasmite la alegria y hace evidente la genialidad
I would argue that the violinist takes a little too much liberty with the rubato. Rubato is fine...but the extent to which he does it is...exaggerated
No. All the exaggerated rubato is annoying to me.
