what do you refer to someone as if you don't know their gender, or they don't want to be gendered? like is there an equivalent of English singular they/them pronouns? does ono function as this?

There are a few tricks we use, when we are dealing with recipients of unknown gender. It of course depends on the situation:
- we often use "państwo" in official letters when addressing people, e.g. "Szanowni Państwo" (Dear Sir and Madam)
- in written texts we use two forms seperated by a slash sign, e.g. "Szanowny Panie/Szanowna Pani" (Dear Sir/Dear Madam), "byłeś/byłaś" (you were)
- we use "lub" (or) to separate the options, e.g. "on lub ona" (he or she)
- we use generic names, e.g. "Drogi Czytelniku" (Dear Reader), "ta osoba" (this person),
- we use indefinite pronouns, e.g."ktoś" (someone)
- we use impersonal forms, e.g. "zrobiono" (it was done), "Czy jest to zrozumiałe?" (Is this understandable?),
- we use "ono" (it) when talking about children of unknown gender

Long story short: we don’t have an equivalent atm:/ There is currently no widely accepted, inawkward way of referring to an individual withour expressing some notion of gender.
In common speech, usage of the neuter gender with respect to persons (‘ono’ etc.) is generally perceived not so much as gender-neutral, but as invoking a separate gender category which includes small children and fictional creatures/non-human characters who fall outside the gender binary, or as a stand-in reference to people with ambiguous gender presentation. Many speakers will perceive the latter as disparaging though, and those wishing to avoid offence may use indirect language (‘ta osoba’/‘that person’ etc.) instead.
Consequently, some trans/NB people associate the neuter gender with trauma; some do use it to refer to themselves in an attempt to reclaim it; some others use alternate NB pronouns and inflexional suffixes that are unfamiliar and seem highly artificial to the general public.

Are we just ignoring that females and children as a group, are in the same cathegory as animals? I am baffled here I sit, as an international medicine student in Poland, stuck with learning medical polish for the next 5 years. Not gonna lie though - I laughed pretty hard (can´t believe it´s even allowed to be honest). It´s a cool language, but the "you plural" is throwing me miles off.
