      @@melrobertson2743 I know, right? It's implied that their relationship started in their senior year of high-school, maybe in the second half as they began preparation for college. If true, this would further validate Elle's belief that she and Warner would eventually get married. Somewhere in the midst of that, said belief would mean he probably took her virginity. Thinking about that makes the viewer's stomach turn even more, because his speech at the restaurant is basically, "I don't care that I strung you along. I know that used you, and I'm not sorry." Even better in hindsight - during the party when Warner kept pressing Elle to quit, upon being reminded by her that they both made it into the same school, he told her that she wasn't "smart enough". At that point we still didn't know that he had been waitlisted and cheated to get in, but obviously Warner knew. He was projecting on Elle. She got admitted on her very own, he got waitlisted and his daddy had to help - he was the one not smart enough.

    Warner being generally awful, and Bruiser's outfits aren't small details people missed. They're main story themes, and deliberate costume choices. They both exist to blatantly tell the audience A: he ain't the one sis. B: Elle is extremely close with her dog and is extra af. Which leads into her helping Paulette.
    Elle's color palate changes throughout the movie aren't a reflection of mood so much as of motivation. She starts in bright colors (especially pink) to demonstrate her bubbly and feminine personality. She changes to the darker colors in an effort to fit in with her peers and earn their respect. She ends in pink because she learns that to truly succeed you need to be yourself.
    We're you people even watching the movie?

    Elle Woods is one of the best written characters because far too often women are written to be *either* beautiful *or* smart. But Elle proves you can be *both.* One does not negate the other. The fact that Elle is smart does not suddenly make her less attractive. Just because she’s attractive it does not make her any less smart! Beauty and brains are not mutually exclusive. And on top of that she has other great qualities like being a good friend, caring owner to her puppy and she’s stylish too. Some may say she’s unrealistic because she’s so “perfect,” but I argue she’s revolutionary because of the fact that her having all these great characteristics is in stark contrast to how most women were written, to be one-dimensional caricature of how the male gaze saw them. Elle Woods is beautiful but she’s so much more than that.

    • @missserenity1090
      @missserenity1090 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It also shows that people can be really smart in different areas. Her knowledge in beauty and fashion is impressive and you can see how smart she is from the very beginning of the movie.

      @AdderTude 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      She's also not handed everything on a silver platter, as is the case with too many female heroes in modern film (Captain Marvel, Rey, etc.). Elle is shown to fail several times and works hard to achieve her goals. Additionally, Emmett isn't a simp like male supporting characters are shown to be in modern shows and movies now with "strong female characters." Elle kept turning to him for help during Brooke's trial and he just kept nodding her on, encouraging her to keep going (also props to the small scene when he tells one of the other lawyers on the legal team to "have a little faith" when the other guy questions Elle's ability as a lawyer).

    • @joannesmith2484
      @joannesmith2484 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AdderTude I'm not familiar with "Rey," but I can't see how you can say that Captain Marvel had everything handed to her. Her entire character is based on getting up after being knocked down, and fighting for everything she ever had. And there are just as many, if not more, male characters "handed everything on a silver platter." Bruce Wayne, anyone? Methinks you doth protest (about females) too much.

    I thought an important detail was her parents' and I think they secretly wanted a child that was a genius law student, but like almost everyone else in the story, had their doubts. We briefly see them discourage her, telling her she isn't a very serious person in the beginning of the film. Towards the end of the film, Elle seems to confirm suspicion of them having doubts, saying she doesn't think even her parents take her seriously. Obviously, her tremendous success as a law student is a pleasant surprise for her parents, as they seem to have genuinely proud smiles on their faces during her graduation.

      I saw her parents “discouragement” as rather them not being able to comprehend WHY she would even want to go there. Not that they didn’t think she could do it, but they didn’t understand why anyone would want to leave the kind of life she had in favor of another one across the country. As someone who grew up in Los Angeles, I can tell you that their reaction and questioning her, is EXACTLY how people who’ve lived there their whole lives think. They can’t understand why anyone would want something differently, as nearly everyone who lives there sees it as the greatest place on earth. I just saw it as them being shallow. Not unsupportive.

    Another little tidbit easily missed.
    When Warner breaks up with Elle he says he needs to “marry a Jackie not a Marilyn” in reference to perhaps the two most common “categories” women have typically been defined as.
    “Are you a Jackie or are you a Marilyn?” But Marilyn Monroe was also underestimated in real life. Perpetuating the dumb blonde stereotype in spite of her actual real life intelligence which was said to be quite impressive. Not sure if it’s from the book or a script only addition. But I thought that was a clever bit of writing and a nice little meta joke. Also flew over my head as a kid lol

Yes, getting into Harvard to try and get back with your Ex is very extreme (although RomComs have that extreme element) but what I like most is that she comes to her senses and sees how Warner truely is, works hard and proves herself while never changing who she is.

    "Studying for LSAT" and improving it by almost 50 points is a total fantasy. Unlike SAT or MCAT, which test actual skills and knowledge, LSAT tests are designed to assess reading comprehension as well as logical and verbal reasoning proficiency. It's possible to "improve" LSAT scores by "studying" to eliminate an element of surprise. To get to 179 as a result of studying, El would have needed to start at 172 or higher.

    So interesting to see how the film and the stage musical were translated as well!!! Thinking about 3 of the major moments.....
    1. Elle and Emmett's Relationship - In the film, they were very warm to each other the whole time. The whole movie, Emmet was just more featured moral support. In the stage musical, their relationship had more of an arch and similar journey. Elle wanted to impress Warner. Emmett wanted to impress Callahan. But they both learn from one another the best is being their own selves. Also, Emmett is the one who really encourages Elle to really CRACK DOWN and HIT THE BOOKS. He motivates her on how to pass class. Throughout the show, Elle and Emmet's chemistry is also very sarcastic and comical. Their friendship and eventual romance blooms as well. Also, Elle proposes to Emmett at the graduation in the very end of the musical!!
    2. The ending with Warner proposing to Elle at the end - In the film, Elle really flips him off as this complete jerk. In the musical during the song FIND MY WAY, she's warmer to him in saying "No" to Warner at the end. Elle actually says THANK YOU to him for really challenging her & make her really think about who she really is.
    3. Elle and Viviene's Relationship - Throughout the course of the film and the musical, Elle and Vivienne do NOT get along..... especially Elle wanting to get Warner back. In the film, Elle and Viviene start becoming more friendly even right before the trial starts. That random conversation with the cuddle from Bruiser. In the musical, they really get along after the first day of Brooke's trial (Elle reveals about the Gay guy lying). Vivienne witnesses Callahan's behavior to Elle. Vivienne is upset and then gets angrier at Warner for being a jerk to Elle. Right as Elle is about to quit, Vivenne stops her in the salon encouraging her to get back.
    HONORABLE MENTIONS:
    1. Elle's Personal Essay - The film of courses is the video of her in her Jacuzzi. In the musical, she brings the entire UCLA Marching Band and Cheerleading Squad for a whole song & dance pep rally to PUSH the dean hard in getting "Elle" entry.
    2. The Removement of Awkward Student "David" from the movie replaced in the musical with a middle eastern student "Padamadan"
    3. Enid was very quiet in the film. In the musical, she was the more HYPER student!!!
    4. The musical - Elle's Delta Nu Friends appear in spirits as her GREEK CHORUS!!
    Anyone other great standout comparisons??!!

    The "ovester" incident. Yup. I feel you.
    Harvard has a long history of gender biases. When I was applying to colleges, I was so offended that women would be admitted to Radcliffe, rather than Harvard. (Part of what turned them into my fourth choice / backup school. Got into my first-choice school (which was statistically harder to get into than Harvard and ranked as the hardest college to get into that year), and never looked back.) BTW - at the time of this comment, U.S. News and World Report ranks Harvard as the _fifth_ ranked law school in the U.S.
    And yes, practice tests really _do_ help with the LSAT, for those of you planning to apply.
