I love that Elle stands in line at the store, clutching her new Mac, still in her bunny outfit. She could've taken the ears off to tone it down a bit, but she didn't. She's mad, she's determined, but she's also totally fine in the bunny outfit. She's not embarrassed to be herself.

Elle maintained a 4.0 GPA, scored a 179/180 on the LSAT, was already attending a Public Ivy university, was a well-known and well-liked member of a high profile sorority, and was the daughter of obviously wealthy parents who’d probably donate to whatever school she attended. Harvard should’ve been BEGGING Elle to enroll.
I mean yeah, I'm not even in college yet, but her grade sounds honestly impressive! But the fact that nearly everyone are taking the 'dumb blonde' stereotype to the next level is just honestly dumb, and this is coming from a literal middle schooler.
@@shisexee lol I thought I already did, he supports trump and the rest on the vd cast doesn't. plus he fights with people on twitter over it. also I heard he said something racist about the Bonnie character on the show
To be fair, Elle's dad seemed to think she was too good for Harvard. "...Dull, boring, ugly. And you, Button, are none of those things." He was probably really proud when she got in regardless.
I also can’t help but wonder if he knew she only wanted to go in order to get Warner back, and this was his way of trying to dissuade her from literally throwing her life away to chase a boy.
I like this, because it's both him trying to uplift her, but also still making certain implications that Elle takes to heart. You're right in that he's saying she's too good for Harvard, as seen with the words "dull" and "boring," but he also adds "ugly," and one of the main conflicts of the movie is the idea that it's beauty OR brains. Elle knows she's beautiful and expresses that through fashion, but part of the implication, for her, is that she should JUST focus on her looks, and that she doesn't NEED to be "smart," as represented by the "ugly" Harvard girls who put more effort into their studies instead of their clothes and makeup.
legally blonde made me fall in love with being a girly girl. it tackles difficult feminist issues while remaining light hearted and fun to watch. it's a masterpiece.
Me too! I watched Legally Blonde when I was in middle school (I'm that old, yes), and to this day as a 29-year-old woman who still fan-girls hard in the Barbie aisle and has to consciously not buy everything in pink, rewatching Legally Blonde is probably the one thing that reminds me that being feminine and girlie is not something to ever be ashamed of. Also, I don't care how old I get there will be a day I find an outfit to match with my dog (the cloud dress was also a shirt on Ruffus.)
Honestly same. The amount of painful mansplaining I have to go through is frustrating. People look at me and see the blonde and the boobs and the dresses and presume I need things explaining to me three times or more even when I’ve sorted out what people are asking at work. Legally blonde made me realise I’m more than happy with how I present myself. And if people want to explain things to me forever then I’m not the dumb one they are for not getting that I know what I’m doing.
I also really like how her orange computer stands out from the rest of the students’ in the lecture halls. So even tho she’s toning down her pink it’s still very elle woods in her style and I love it
Something to note on the halter dress: Elle is likened to Marilyn Monroe by Warner in the break-up scene, and Marilyn's most famous look is the ivory halter dress from Seven Year Itch.
My mom has a very bad opinion on women who care about fashion, make up, hair... she has literally said to me "I prefferto use my brain". I was a girl with straight A's and I really enjoyed studying, but for a long period of time I had the idea that being girly and care for what you wear was opposite to being smart or hardworking and that I couldn't be both. Learning that Legally blonde had such a feminist message, made me realize that every single woman needs to and can be empowered. Now I am a proud girly nerd
I am a proud girly nerd Maybe not Elle Woods level, but I'm not scared to wear my hair in something other than "leave it down I don't have time run a comb through it once good enough okay gotta go be smart"
When Elle wears the third halter dress in her video essay, that could also be seen as her love for Warner because she is only trying to get into Harvard Law School to win him back
@@brigitteyim5609 I don't know, I don't think Elle dresses the way she does to attract people (sexually)--she's always come off as wearing what she wants because she likes it, personally. It's when she's trying to fit in during her internship that she's dressing for others. Elle knows she's pretty, but I don't think she uses her fashion and body in that video intentionally; I always thought it was just showing how casual, fashionable, and fun her personality is that she thinks the video essay would be appropriate, or even showing her non-traditional background, because it reminds me of audition tapes for actresses or beauty pageant contestants, and seems to be inspired by them
I know this is an old comment but yeahh they might have thought something along the lines of what Vivian thought Elle was doing with Callahan... I also want to add that she majored in something related to fashion and mostly took classes that weren't very academically challenging, so her counselor thought that she wasn't good enough of a student to get into Harvard. But Elle is clearly a clever, hardworking girl, and her knowledge about perms helped her in that case at the end, so the stuff on her college transcript was good for her all along! Just another layer of people underestimating Elle because of her traditionally feminine interests, and then her turning around and showing them that her love of fashion is one her strengths
@@abigailr3250 Fashion design can be academically challenging. It was honestly the harder of my two majors. But unfortunately the perception of it is that is easy.
@@savannahleslie3515 You're right, like when the counselor says "Harvard won't be impressed that you aced History of Polka Dots", like she does not comprehend that it's still a history class focusing on a very specific thing that isn't well documented which is probably insanely difficult. And she's a fashion merchandising major, which means she is a business major above all else.
@@teddypawncrumps23 Especially since in my experience, my fashion history classes, focused on how fashion and politics/social issues influenced each other.
@@nathaliem3423 personally i think vivian's outfits look kinda bland and outdated at times, but her outfits are definitely really good base outfits, so as someone who likes the preppy style, i definitely took note of her outfits to integrate into my own.
@@nathaliem3423 So the video didn’t put down the conservative preppy look (she does views Cher, Gretchen, and even Elle’s intern looks very highly). It just the costuming for Vivian is not as polished as the average Ivy League WASP. Which I think is intentionally capturing Vivian’s unhappiness. She plays the part with the matching couples sets but it’s still playing a part, and these boxier looks are essentially a shell she’s trapped in (much like her future with Warren). Also because they’re extremely plain and muted, it forces your eye to immediately go towards her engagement ring. And in the beginning/early second act of the movie, she’s still viewed as the “antagonist” of the film so it’s visually reminding the audience that.
The scene where Elle and Vivian finally start bonding in Elle's dorm room is SUCH a heartwarming moment. It's so magical when they finally realize that they have more in common than they initially thought and that there's no need to treat each other as "competition". It makes me emotional every time!! 😭💕
Probably my favorite scene from the movie. You can see that Vivian is actually kind of goofy too lol when she pokes fun at Warner for not getting into Harvard right away. And she thinks that Bruiser is cute, it's shows she can be gentle, it's a very dynamic scene. I love it!
@@Phantomopery5 She’s also wearing an outfit that is more relaxed and comfortable, but keeps the pearls and blue. I thought it was her best outfit in the movie.
I also thought it was a great scene about women that are no longer competing against each other. I liked that she wasn’t a villain at the end of the movie.
Nah, Vivian is still a b1tch to me. Looking back that how easy she judged Elle on the elevator makes me sick. As a lawyer she should've doing a cross examination, at the moment, she failed as a lawyer.
For the time period, that's pretty forward thinking actually. At the time, I was expecting Elle to finally "win" and Vivian would somehow "lose." But then they end up bonding and it's just... nice. It's kinda common nowadays, (though still not common enough) but back then, it blew some tropes straight out of the water.
I told an ex that Legally Blonde is a really important film to me. I told them all about how the movie is feminist in a really bold and different way. Like you say, it presents girly girls in a positive way (the Take does a great job of showing how girly girls are often maligned in film and TV). It also shows that women can be strong and empowered even while being girly and traditionally feminine. This film was so important to me because I grew up with feminist ideals. My mom was a feminist and raised me to be one too. But the media I consumed so often showed feminist female characters as defying femininity, by taking on masculine hobbies (like you said) and wearing more masculine or androgynous clothes (like you said). This wasn't reflective of me who had a pink bedroom and a large collection of Barbies. I continuously was made to feel less than, both in the real world and by the media, for being so girly. Legally Blonde essentially said eff all that and embraced femininity. At no point in the film does Elle ever have to 'ditch her pink' or blonde locks. It was so important for me to see that, especially when I was entering college and wanted to be taken seriously. My ex proceeded to tell me that I can get that message 'in other films' and basically undermined the seriousness of the film. But isn't that ironic? The whole point of the film is that people don't take Elle seriously based on face-value, but that's true of this film as well. It's a silly rom-com from the early 2000s; it doesn't seem all that deep. And yet, it actually is a lot deeper and more challenging than many so-called serious films. Anyway, I just needed to vent about that.
I think what I love most is that it’s more feministic of a movie than a rom com. Like when I think about her relationship she has at the end is like a minor detail to me. Because the movie is more about her development in the face of prejudice and up holding “girly values” in the professional work place. And her romance isn’t a plot point more so like a nice addition for Elle ? You get what I’m saying ? I also agree that The Take does do a great job breaking down this movie’s feminine aspects in a consistent format
@[·Vintxge Vibez·] that's totally true. I remember I saw this movie as a teenager and I wasn't fond of it cause I used to be a bit like the Salma Blair hero and used to be a bit of a snob. but when I saw a fragment of it as an adult woman I was amazed by how nice it is, what a good message it has and how opposite it is to the stereotypes about women and feminists. I think this movie should has a cult-status as "Mean girls" has. (sorry for my english, I'm not a native speaker)
Same thing here. It was always so annoying how in media, women who wanted to seem as powerful and be taken seriously were always so dull and serious, and of course they had to have the statement "not like other girls" which just seems to attract men's attention. Elle is someone I relate to. And I love this movie so much. Many people don't see the messages behind it and just dismiss it because it's girly. And I've noticed if a chick flick is your favorite movie then you'd get laughed at.
It's an actually feminist film, that actually shows true feminists ideals, and not simple commercial feminism, like that scene in Endgame or Birds of Prey
Now that you mention Ryan from High School Musical, can we get a video about him? Cause not many male characters in the early 2000s had wardroves as iconic as his
@@IceQueen975 actually Kenny Ortega always imagined him as gay but that didn’t fly with Disney back then... But Ryan is an icon whether he’s gay or straight
Vivian is such a sad (in some ways!) and interesting character. Vivian grew up basically internalizing and taking notes on what the expectations of her will be if she wants to have this certain life and career she desires. She dresses a certain way at school because she assumes that if she follows certain rules, she'll get those achievements. It's interesting to watch her bitterness towards Elle because the first reaction is that "Elle doesn't deserve this, she didn't jump through all the hoops like I (Vivian) did, how dare she." To then coming to the realization that these "rules" are almost always just nonsense men put in place to control women.
I can relate to that honestly. Also, not just men, but absolutely other women keep those rules in place as well. People who value such unwritten rules of dress and conduct very much can go overboard and start imposing them on others.
It’s really sad how she’s like so many girls who genuinely think breaking out of feminine roles will make men respect them more, when men never had that respect regardless
One thing that I love about Paulette's story is how they don't just brush off her failed marriage. A lot of movies would play that up for laughs. "Ha ha, isn't it funny how this woman cries herself to sleep after being dumped? Let's watch her sob and eat ice cream again!" while other characters cringe and look uncomfortable around her. I love how Elle listens to Paulette and empathizes with her and even goes with her to get her dog back. She's exactly the friend you'd want during a breakup.
i noticed that in the beginning, Elle wears a simple green cardigan, does her hair up, and wears glasses becoz she feels in order to assimilate into a Harvard student and their intelligence she has to dress like one. However, in the end during case, when she wears that pink dress w/ curls in her hair, she realizes she can exude intelligence through her attitude and can still retain her girly style.
I’ve always thought that Elle treats bruiser like her inner thoughts, telling him “don’t be nervous, everyone will love you” and “Warner is going to be so excited to see you”. It seems like a good confidence boosting technique tbh.
I was tomboyish growing up, but Legally Blonde was one of my favorite movies. You sympathize with all female characters and see empowerment comes in different forms. Also, bonus points to the fashion.
💕 Legally Blond, is one of my favorite stories a few years ago, middle school, I definitely fit into the not like other girl mindset. I hated the color pink and the "popular" girls. But then I listened to the Legally Blond musical and it really helped me accept my girly side. I will forever be thankful to the movie and musical version of this story for helping me get out of a toxic mindset.
Same, I used to hate pink and dresses and I made fun of girls who were interested in makeup and boys etc. I was trying so hard to be not like the other girls and to be fair, the media made that seem like a good thing (still does sometimes). I am so sorry now for having that toxic mindset and I honestly love pink and pastel colours and dresses and rainbows and anything cutesy. I'm a big ass fan of Sailor Moon lol. I still like black and books and all the more "masculine" things, but I realized that no one can stop me from liking both. It took me a while to realize tho lol
@@somethingsomethinglastname9206 don’t be sorry it’s not your fault it’s just what society taught us “boys cool girls boring” and almost every girl went through that phase including me, AND expressing your masculine side is COMPLETELY fine 💕
One thing to note is that while her parents kind of brush off her ambitions of going to law school, they only do it because they don’t think it’s suitable for her personality, not because they don’t think she’s smart enough.
that is accurate, but it is a double sided coin as they imply that with their vast privledge and connections they could make the process far less difficult, or make it as easy for her to be placed in as it was for Warner himself. They could make calls or find the loopholes for her instead of the traditional more stressful way of applying, test-taking, be considered, etc. They even imply helping her bypass the process altogether, and if all else fails, encourage Elle to give up when adversity does become too daunting each just feel possible with how they address Elle and with how Elle reacts to their comments
I not only love the overall message of the movie something I always appreciated was how amazing the love interest(emmet) was, he stood up for elle in situations of pressure and behind her back. He believes in her and never pressures her to do anything she doesn’t want to. He encourages her and never try’s to steal her thunder. In a huge amount of chick flicks the love interest isn’t the nearly the same level of encouraging or supportive as emmet
My favourite part of this film was always how Elle ended up with the unconventional looking lawyer, not the handsome prince. Also, as a tomboy, this film really made me see "girly girls" as real people, not just ditzy bullies.
tomboys can be bullies not just girly girls. people in between can be bullies. anyone can be bullies. also the class clown can be a bully in a more like annoying, obnoxious asshole way. family members can be controlling which is bullying.
@@bi_cycle also why are blondes usually seen as girly? brunettes can be girly. you should watch facts of life. tomboy characters cindy and jo are very different. cindy is very sporty but pretty sweet and friendly jo is a tough, motorcycle loving one.
I have more terrible bullying expeirences with tomboys than girly girls.. Most tomboys are "not like the other girls" "pick me". Even i'm dark and edgy at that time, i'm still girly according to them
I'll be starting my PhD in September, and I 100% intend on wearing a hot pink blazer and pants/shorts combo on my first day of school. I must pay tribute to the woman (although fictional) who inspired me to live proud, keep going to school, and never be afraid to walk into every room like a firework.
Definitely. It's called dark academia now, but this kind of preppy and studious (but also romantic) vibe has been around for ages and has been loved by many!
The scene when Elle puts that boutique saleswoman in her place is iconic and illustrates from the very beginning how savvy, observant, detail-oriented, and intelligent Elle truly is. She beats the saleswoman at her own game and exposes her lie. Elle was already a lawyer in the making. 💖
I love this movie so much. And I love the introduction of the theme immediately with the comparison of Jackie Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe. Both Jackie and Marilyn were exceptional women, but where one was respected, the other was seen as stupid and taken advantage of by almost every person she meant. But Jackie was also a fashion icon and Marilyn by many accounts was intelligent and sensitive. I love that this movie gave the "Marilyn" character the chance to shine as a complex person with determination, intelligent, and sex appeal together.
I actually don’t think it’s because Vivian was unhappy with the job that she solely wore greys and blacks. I think it was meant to be a distinction between how the two women viewed professionalism. Vivian thinks color and feminine expression isn’t professional she wants to be taken seriously. Where Elle expresses herself and doesn’t hold that same view which is represented in the movie’s finale.
This perception of colour as "unprofessional" really does seem to be a current thing in some circles! My own epiphany about workplace fashion happened when I was working support staff for a big international accounting firm in the early 2010s, and I realised on walking into meetings (esp. in winter) that they literally looked like funerals!! 😂 So many arbitrary workplace fashion rules too, even for guys: no short sleeves & always ties 🙄 After that I firmly committed to always bringing colour to any office I was working in, & even incorporating flower hair-clips & costume jewellery to express myself, despite how out-of-the-norm it was for those environments... Wanted to remind people that's it's possible to be highly professional and still be an individual!
I loved your little dig at Endgame. I was never really that impressed of that moment. In other news, I want to watch Legally Blonde right now. Always been one of my favorites and I find it quite motivating.
I remember being in the movie theater and watching it and looking around while others were cheering and I remember the overwhelming disgust I felt. I actually HATE Endgame and it took me awhile to vocalize how I felt and why I felt that way. The WHOLE movie fell flat on it's face. I mean they spent WAY TOO MUCH time on a white guy fighting people of color than they did building female characters. It was legitimately disgusting and nobody can ever change my mind on the fact Avengers Endgame was an AWFUL movie.
Infinity War had a similar scene where the women were fighting the female villain, and it didn’t scream “Girl Power” like that scene in Endgame. I’m trying to think what made the scene work better in Infinity War.
@@reikun86 if it was the woman with horns, i think it's because the sequence didn't put too much emphasis on the fact that it was women vs. woman (kinda sounds awful when i put it like that lol but you get what i mean). on the other hand, endgame was HELLA on the nose with the women ensemble. also, the context of that particular scene was built upon these women kinda protecting one boy (spiderman) after he got his ass handed to him, immediately. whereas in infinity war, their objective was to protect an unconscious and battle unfit man (ultron), and it "kinda just happen" this one female villain was being stopped by several female heroes. in endgame it came across as, "men ain't shit, women get the job done." in infinity war, it came across as, "oh shit, shuri's not done with ultron yet, we have to stop this woman." endgame came across as pandering; infinity war came across as just another battle scene. that's my interpretation, at least. infinity war came much closer to what a lot of people have been asking in their female empowerment movies: just make it good, there's no need to scream, "LOOK, STRONG WOMAN" every time a woman comes on screen. endgame was more like ... the typical """feminist""" moment in which they try to do a fan service but like most other fan services, it was surface level and really didn't address what people are asking for beyond, "LOOK, STRONG WOMEN."
I played Vivienne! Putting her outfits together with our costume team was super fun, I even got my my hair cut several inches shorter to get her signature bob 😅
Man, I’ve always wanted to be in a show of Legally Blonde. Props to you for being able to pull of Vivian because I know my vocal chords could never lol
I like to believe the outfits Elle wears at the start of Harvard that you didn't like (and neither did I) were representative of how she subconsciously felt like a mismatch at the university
It shows she didn't know the "rules" of old money East Coast as smoking jackets are for men and not worn in public. It shows the awkwardness of leaning the ropes as a newcomer.
oooh that shot with both elle and vivian in the hallway their shoes are so clearly different. the costume designers really went all out for this movie! love the analysis
I love that when the boy cap outfit for Elle came up, I paused the video and thought "she looks like a mash of Ryan and Sharpay" only to unpause and have you reference exactly that! I love your videos so much. So informative and calm yet gorgeous and fun!!
regardless of the feminist themes of legally blonde, it’s just a very inspiring movie. elle is constantly told she can’t set out to do things she wants, yet her faith and determination takes her to the top. and through something that’s so feminine no less (her winning her case by finding holes in Chutney’s story).
I just realized while rewatching that Elle's curls in the final courtroom scene are very similar to what Brooke's hair in the same scene. It kinda feels like a full reveal to the court how Elle and Brooke are of similar backgrounds and interests and thus are a better pair to work together instead of other lawyer.
I agree with you that the more "serious" Elle outfits are the best and so timeless. My fave is Brooke's last outfit, that black suit with the golden necklace is perfect.
i literally stopped watching a different moderngurlz video to come watch this one lmao edit: just finished the video and popping back in to say that elle's outfit when she comes back to court and saves the day is not only my fave outfit she wears, but one of my favorite movie costumes of all time. i actually don't really like the color pink and i never wear it, but i truly love seeing other women take this color that is so often disregarded and seen as frivolous or immature and wearing it with pride and power. ugh. now i'm emotional. let me go watch legally blonde 2
Legally blonde is one of my favourite movies ever. Elle is such an iconic girly character but not a classic mean girl. She is truly a sweet person that cares for others which makes her in the end a great lawyer. It also shows how being feminine made her win the case in that legendary end scene. Love it
Omg I’ve been saying this for ages!!! I suppressed my love for “girly” things and colours at a young age because I thought to be strong and confident I had to be like my male friends. So I put down my dolls and stopped wearing dresses because it wasn’t “cool”. Now I’m older I realised you can be in full glam at work and it shouldn’t matter because your work and demeanour should speak for itself. Thanks for making a really insightful video x
Her bunny outfit is absolutely iconic. I love the choker, the tights, the feather frills on her lingerie. Totally my style (I love all shades of pink!!) she looks amazing in it, and rather than leave the party, she stays and rocks it. I love her confidence, it’s infectious and inspiring! 🙌🏽
Love love love this! I've always adored this movie and I love the musical even more. My favorite thing about Elle is that she is kind. So often, pretty blondes who dress in pink are portrayed as mean.
young me not realizing how much i LOVE elle’s fashion- i hated pink for most of my life and usually hated characters that wore pink, but i never hate elle woods. honestly now that i’m older i just love her more and now that i do enjoy pink her outfits are *chefs kiss *
I'm fascinated by the correlations you pick up in these films. I always felt the fashion in chick-flicks was just for fashion and what was trendy, but they indeed are used for symbolism and foreshadowing of things in the plot.
The gaudy hat with sparkles on it could also mean that Vivian is starting to feel the competition between her and Elle. That scene it is featured in is the scene where we start to see Elle take law school more seriously (and winning the hypothetical case), and therefore, Vivian might be trying to compete with Elle subtly through fashion and try to catch up to her. Because the sparkles don't seem very much like a "preppy" thing to wear, it seems like something Elle would wear instead.
I had been waiting for this deep dive!! I had noticed the thing about her work wear too, it spoke loudly that she was in a way taking inspiration from Vivien. I always thought that Vivien & Elle's dynamic was of mutual (grudging at the beginning) admiration, where Elle wanted to learn from Vivien how to taken more seriously while Vivien wanted to learn how to be more free-spirited from Elle.
This was such a treat to wake up too. I’m going through a break up and didn’t realize how much I needed to watch this movie again until now. The parallels are insane. Also loooove your analysis! Especially Vivian‘s, nobody ever talks about her style.
About the intro, especially 1:00 : This is why I love Jojo's Bizarre Adventure ( yeah I'm bringing this here ), and other media who have a similar mentality. You can be a strong, muscular fighter, wear Gucci or Prince inspired outfit, cry for your friends and be the mom of the group *at the same time* . You can be a pinkie girl and have a serious job. You can be a serious girl who love study and tea and dream of becoming a pro hero and have a sexy outfit. You can be a badass fashionista gangster. *And* have normal human emotions without being shame. It's not incompatible. And I love Elle for everything she is.
I too like Elle’s work clothes better, but the fun I get from seeing someone sporting such pink and bold clothes with that amount of confidence, makes me wanna be the girliest girl like her
I loved this! I love this movie but I've never really stopped to think about how the fashion helps to tell the story too. I think a video on the live action bratz movie would be so cool, I think the fashion in that movie also helps a lot with the story telling.
I love that Elle stands in line at the store, clutching her new Mac, still in her bunny outfit. She could've taken the ears off to tone it down a bit, but she didn't. She's mad, she's determined, but she's also totally fine in the bunny outfit. She's not embarrassed to be herself.

To be fair, Elle's dad seemed to think she was too good for Harvard. "...Dull, boring, ugly. And you, Button, are none of those things."
He was probably really proud when she got in regardless.
Agreed.
Honestly I thought he was talking down to her a bit, but as you pointed out he was saying she was too good for it
I also can’t help but wonder if he knew she only wanted to go in order to get Warner back, and this was his way of trying to dissuade her from literally throwing her life away to chase a boy.
@@myettechase That's a very good point.
Me too, sis. This movie opened up girliness for young me and I am eternally grateful.
Same! I was feeling very sexualized when I'm just being myself tbh. But I'm glad I could be confident with being girly!
@@cocoajames5 yes! femininity is often coded white. as a dark skinned, hijab-wearing, girly girl, I'd like to be recognized as a very feminine woman!

Good catch! Especially since he told her he needs a Jackie, not a Marilyn.
Brooke Wyndham’s newspaper blazer 😩🙌🏾 ... always loved that look

When Elle wears the third halter dress in her video essay, that could also be seen as her love for Warner because she is only trying to get into Harvard Law School to win him back
When she brought this up I thought it was kind of like her love/obsession with getting in
I interpreted it as a way of using her fashion and beauty as a way to get the Harvard admissions panel to like her
@@Sarah-lv6jx honestly thought that was what they were going to say
@@brigitteyim5609 I don't know, I don't think Elle dresses the way she does to attract people (sexually)--she's always come off as wearing what she wants because she likes it, personally. It's when she's trying to fit in during her internship that she's dressing for others. Elle knows she's pretty, but I don't think she uses her fashion and body in that video intentionally; I always thought it was just showing how casual, fashionable, and fun her personality is that she thinks the video essay would be appropriate, or even showing her non-traditional background, because it reminds me of audition tapes for actresses or beauty pageant contestants, and seems to be inspired by them
And she mainly gets into the school because the admissions staff are attracted to her
This girl had a 4.0 GPA and they still questioned her?? They probably thought she obtained her grades through other means or something.
This is reflected when Vivian thought Elle seduced Callahan to get ahead, but in reality, he sexually harassed her
@@abigailr3250 Fashion design can be academically challenging.
@@teddypawncrumps23 Especially since in my experience, my fashion history classes, focused on how fashion and politics/social issues influenced each other.
vivian is so pretty and her style is lowkey kinda cute. i feel like her preppy style could totally work if elle added some pizzazz
Right!! Just because it's conservative and not colorful doesn't mean it's bad. I didn't like how Vivian's review kinda put down that aesthetic.
I don't like it that much, but the blue and purple fits looked so good on Vivian
Honestly if they were tailored more rather than kinda baggy she would look fantastic
It's an actually feminist film, that actually shows true feminists ideals, and not simple commercial feminism, like that scene in Endgame or Birds of Prey
you don't need to be masculine to be a feminist :)

One thing to note is that while her parents kind of brush off her ambitions of going to law school, they only do it because they don’t think it’s suitable for her personality, not because they don’t think she’s smart enough.
Right, her dad says "You don't NEED law school", not that she wouldn't get in
that is accurate, but it is a double sided coin as they imply that with their vast privledge and connections they could make the process far less difficult, or make it as easy for her to be placed in as it was for Warner himself. They could make calls or find the loopholes for her instead of the traditional more stressful way of applying, test-taking, be considered, etc. They even imply helping her bypass the process altogether, and if all else fails, encourage Elle to give up when adversity does become too daunting

Honestly I love Elle's first outfit as Callahan's intern. The frill sort of thing is gorgeous!

Omgg yeah i forgot this movie came out before HSM
😂 So many arbitrary workplace fashion rules too, even for guys: no short sleeves & always ties 🙄
After that I firmly committed to always bringing colour to any office I was working in, & even incorporating flower hair-clips & costume jewellery to express myself, despite how out-of-the-norm it was for those environments... Wanted to remind people that's it's possible to be highly professional and still be an individual!
This movie is my personality trait
THIS MOVIE IS MY BIBLE!!!

The black suit/dress Elle wears with her slip just showing is my favorite. Like you; I'd still wear this. :)

regardless of the feminist themes of legally blonde, it’s just a very inspiring movie. elle is constantly told she can’t set out to do things she wants, yet her faith and determination takes her to the top. and through something that’s so feminine no less (her winning her case by finding holes in Chutney’s story).
Yes,my very straight older brother loves watching this movie with me because he feels so inspired by elle's perseverance and self assurance.
My fave is Brooke's last outfit, that black suit with the golden necklace is perfect.

edit: just finished the video and popping back in to say that elle's outfit when she comes back to court and saves the day is not only my fave outfit she wears, but one of my favorite movie costumes of all time. i actually don't really like the color pink and i never wear it, but i truly love seeing other women take this color that is so often disregarded and seen as frivolous or immature and wearing it with pride and power. ugh. now i'm emotional. let me go watch legally blonde 2
The last day of court Brooke outfit always slays me. It looks AMAZING.
I literally just watched this movie for the second time this week and a love it so much. these outfit analysis videos are so good, keep it up!
you should totally do a buffy (tv show) outfit analysis
Love the pfp
DIDN'T KNOW I NEEDED THIS TILL YOU MADE IT
LMFAO
Your voice is literally almost identical to Selena Gomez’. Very interesting video!!🤩
Omg that’s who I was hearing! Thank you!!
And now I can't unhear it...
@@roxy20231000 Me neither...
For several months, I thought that the narrator was Ginny from “ Ginny And Georgia “
Good catch!
The fact that one of her besties now plays a mom of teenagers in euphoria solidifies the fact that I’m old af 😂
I never once considered how threatened Vivian must have been by Elle. Thank you for pointing that out.
I had been waiting for this deep dive!! I had noticed the thing about her work wear too, it spoke loudly that she was in a way taking inspiration from Vivien. I always thought that Vivien & Elle's dynamic was of mutual (grudging at the beginning) admiration, where Elle wanted to learn from Vivien how to taken more seriously while Vivien wanted to learn how to be more free-spirited from Elle.
do I have the confidence to wear brooke's and elle's wardrobe? no
but do I want to? Absolutely
This was such a treat to wake up too. I’m going through a break up and didn’t realize how much I needed to watch this movie again until now. The parallels are insane. Also loooove your analysis! Especially Vivian‘s, nobody ever talks about her style.
lolll I’m going through a breakup too
About the intro, especially 1:00 :
This is why I love Jojo's Bizarre Adventure ( yeah I'm bringing this here ), and other media who have a similar mentality.
When you showed that “Empowering Female ensemble” from Endgame, I double tapped like 50 times thinking this was Tumblr YES SIS LOUDER PLEASE
i am absolutely BEGGING you to do a style analysis for The Devil Wears Prada. i have never seen one on youtube and i think you’d do it amazingly
I too like Elle’s work clothes better, but the fun I get from seeing someone sporting such pink and bold clothes with that amount of confidence, makes me wanna be the girliest girl like her
As a curly girl, I was OBSESSED with Linda Cardellini's look on Legally Blond. I never thought curls could be so classy
wait am i on glue or did we not get into the same law school warner?! iconic
I remember the first time I saw Vivian’s outfits in Legally Blonde and I was in love💕 Her preppy style is amazing!
Margot is possibly the most underrated icon in the history of cinema. Her wedding gloves never fail to make me laugh
I love how technically her dad is more worried that she would not like Harvard, rather than think she would not get in
I loved this! I love this movie but I've never really stopped to think about how the fashion helps to tell the story too. I think a video on the live action bratz movie would be so cool, I think the fashion in that movie also helps a lot with the story telling.
I also love Elle's "lawyerly" outfits more than her others, but that could be because I'm not a fan of pink
vivian walk so harry styles could run I SAID WHAT I SAID
where is the correlation
this makes so much sense
Uhm....can someone please explain?
I think it’s all the pearls Vivian is wearing.
Why does this make no sense yet complete sense at the same time.
not me crying because of your elle’s analysis💀 she’s literally a legend she’s everything to me
Clicked immediately also my favorite outfit was the sequin bikini top with the fur jacket
This is why fashion is so fun to analyze! This movie is so much more than people give it credit for!
