  • Training to receive first aid includes getting your dog accustomed to a muzzle. Even the nicest dog may bite when in a lot of pain. Additional training includes getting you dog accustomed to being transported in a sling.
Watch this before you take your dog overlanding or camping to get some ideas on what type of emergency gear to take for your pet.

Hello guys. I’m a veterinarian who teaches trauma care to law enforcement officers who have canine partners. I think your video was excellent. I would add a muzzle because even very nice dogs can bite if they are in extreme pain due to something like a fracture. I also carry a SWAT T tourniquet for my dog because the CAT
tourniquets don’t work well on dogs, they slide off. Other than those two points, most things you have learned in your human trauma classes apply to dogs. So pressure wraps, clotting gauze, and chest seals can be carried for yourself and your doggo.

Thanks so much that means a lot from a veterinarian! Thanks for mentioning the muzzle and SWAT tourniquet. I'll add a muzzle to my kit. I've got the tourniquet in my human kit. Thanks!

That’s a great K-9 first aid kit . Having worked as a paramedic after my military retirement. I can say that bag rocks and litter harness is very handy

Thanks appreciate that! It started out as a very small K-9 first aid kit and just kept getting bigger. So, I decided to do a video about it. There's more to the kit I take in the field but I wanted the video to be very basic.

This is a subject that needs more attention. We seem to go into the field without thinking about the fact that our pets can get injured too. Your first aid kit is perhaps the best I've ever seen. The sling is something everyone should have. For people that aren't ready to go all in, there are also commercially available "starter' pet first aid kits that would be good to have.

Good grief, your dog has way more medical supplies than I have. My first aid supplies are more along the line of Steve's. Many decades ago I was talking to a friend of the family who was by that time 75 years old. He had spent his entire life in the bush hunting, fishing, berry picking and running a trap line. I asked him what he carried in his first aid kit and he replied he never carried one. I then asked what he did when he hurt himself. His response was "When you are in the back country, don't hurt yourself". In other words, everytime you pick up a knife or axe, or go to step over a log, etc. you must pay attention. This was in the day before cell phones, GPS sat messengers or sat phones.

Thank you for covering this important topic. A lot of people take their dogs with absoultely no first aid items at all. At least a basic, dog-specific first aid kit is a very good idea to include when you travel with your dog. Thanks!

I think you should add a de-wormer to the kit. Not for the dog, but for yourself. Considering where the dog licks itself prior to giving you kisses, that could be a really important piece of kit.

The groups are a great way to try harder stuff, learn some new trails, and meet new people. My next video will have some more challenging parts and multiple winching recoveries. Cheers!
