Great episode, as usual! Lovely to see the “spinnaker” … it’s an asymmetric sail, some know as a “cruising chute”, and is a game-changer for you. Top tip … always retain the main. If the wind is too gutsy, ask yourselves whether the spinnaker should come down, but aim to avoid a kite-only configuration. Worst situation arises if the wind pipes unexpectedly and you’re flying the kite with no main and the snuffer jams. The virtues of the main are that it can be used to ‘blanket’ the kite while you’re sorting the issue. Also, if you have an unforeseen emergency, you have the main available for manoeuvring. If it’s purely a question of balance, then as others have suggested consider the mizzen. I sail solo with my cruising chute and have learned (the hard way) to be disciplined about the maximum wind over the deck. If wind over the deck exceeds 12 knots, I take it down before (as has happened to me) it becomes the ‘cursing shoot’. Anyhow, loving your work, thanks for sharing! 🎉
Beautiful spinaker. I have a (70 year old) ketch too, but no spinaker I only have a self kentering jib on a boom (I sail solo). I live on an ex-sailboat motorboat next to my sailboat, both are 11 meter long. You were lucky that there is no big damage. A friend is now stranded in the north of the Netherlands being on his way to Norway (since september) in his 28ft sailboat. (also his permanent home) He hit a piece of wood about a month ago, while motoring. Motor total loss, screw, drive shaft, rudder, all damaged. His motor was just rebuild before he left. Now he has to wait until everything is fixed. Greetings from a cold Dutch harbor (1 degrees Celsius, water under my boat is only 1.4 degrees)
Love your spinnaker, good job finally getting it up! Tell Parker to get an update out on his channel, lots of us follow him as well and he's been silent for too long.
If you had your mizzen up it would help stabilise the steering a bit. The mast on a ketch is further forward than on a sloop so the moment of force when down wind can mean that the rudder has less bite. The mizzen would help shift the moment aft a bit.
I am distraught. I missed my Teulu Time Monday, so here I am on Tuesday. I hope you got time to enjoy that surf break Zach, what a nice long ride. The excitement of raising the spinnaker for the first time was contagious. Beacka was pissed" at the AP.
The Spinnaker looked awesome. It all seemed to work so well. As a landlubber, I’m still a little confused about the different sails you have , especially the foresails. Perhaps you will explain someday. Next week’s spoiler looks exiting and looking forward to it.
Beautiful intro guys ..love the music.. black spinny makes a great shape ... As others have said use your ketch sail to balance the steering forces on your helm and act like a staibilizer if your rocking with a swell whist heading down wind.
Am so glad that you chose to buy a tank of a boat, hitting whatever must have been one of those "stomach dropping" moments. Keep safe, and when going forward wear a life vest..!
A "tank"? Compared to what? 😇😋 Heh, its cool, and they will be glad for what they have when they hit Alaska. But seriously, we need to persuade them to stay away from the Aleutians. That damned place is just a no-go zone.
What a roller coaster ride! I've been looking forward to you hoisting the spinnaker for a bit now but bummed to hear you had some other challenges. Your content is my absolute favorite on YT! Hope all is well.
For the autopilot... i recently switched from the legacy fluxgate powered raymarine to the new evo series raymarine autopilot and the gyro compass they use really improved the down wind course stability. The new evo pilot is compatible with your current AP drive unit so you could do the upgrade on a bit of a budget if needed.
Yes, that some-acre looked very well Kempt. The pattern of pieces put together into this shape looked impressive as wel. Beautifully made. You're a great ambassador for the brand.
The spinnaker looks great. A word of caution though, keep an eye on your windspeed (often deceptive downwind) you don't want to be caught out in 15kts rising trying to get it back in its sock with just the 2 of you. Have a knife ready.
sick Christmas presents! i love getting gifts that i want and need i bet your mom saw the hanging organizers that the local woman made for you and was like "no way is my son gonna use that garbage!" and that's why she made you some good ones lol
That's an excellent avenue of thought. How many months do you spend cruising How many months in boatyards? I want a boat, I think. I have no love of boatyards. You're one of the few sailing couples who are still cruising. I enjoy your days at sea. Thank you! You two might be the last cruising couple on youtube (for now). No wait. Expedition Evans say they're almost done after a year in Spain. Sonthey are not sailing yet. Magic Carpet is sailing at the moment for a limited time. Then they are back in the boatyard! What do you think you hit? Are your bilges fresh and dry?
If you sail 40% of the time you are an exceptional sailor. I think most cruisers sail 15 to 20% of the time. And anchor the rest. A yard visit every two yrs is nessary.

Your spinnaker looks like it needs to be attached to the spinnaker pole not to the deck. This will allow you to 'square the pole back and sail under the spinnaker. Using the pole lets you adjust the fullness of the spinnaker by adjusting the height of the pole as well as running it shy, (the sheet hard on and the pole almost touching the forestay)
Take your grounding as a teaching moment. Boats have been sunk due to this scenario. You must zoom into your course line all along the route and check the full length of the route. If you plot a route from A to B and then just sail the magenta line this is what can happen. A boat was wrecked in the Pacific with just this scenario. Stay safe and keep on voyaging 👍
Be careful of running too deep with the spiñnaker up, especially in a decreasing breeze and/or sloppy sea state, it can result in a wrap around the forestay, which is an experience that'll mark you for life. It'll also probably trash the sail if it's a bad one. Somebody else has suggested flying it off the whisker pole, which maybe a good thing if you want to run a bit more square. You'd have to rig the pole very low though, to keep the luff of the spi looking decent.
If running deep..then a tweaker from the outboard end of the boom is much quicker and easier to rig. Also with an asso, and tighter angles a reefed (or double reefed) main keeps the slot well open, reducing weather helm dramatically.
Marine life like giant turtles whales.. logs and flotsam floating off shore . Automated Sea drones.. biggest danger is containers off ships. Then there's Navigation boys that break loose and Fish Accumulation device's for FADs for attracting small fish and those attract the larger ones. It's getting busy out there .
what kind of handheld radio are you using when talking about the spinacre? Im looking for a better radio with some better range and yours seemed crystal clear....
For the love of God get a water deployable life raft system with quick releases in it. Not ratchet straps. When you absolutely need it you’re not going to be quick enough to cut it open the ratchet straps.

Meh, 3 years? Sure, some people get there quicker, but some never do.... not with the kinds of smiles you both have.
That matters. ;)

Hi there

Be on the lookout for whale sharks. I know people that have seen them in the Gulf of California, and you can jump in the water and swim with them.
Out of interest. Do you put a passage plan together prior to leaving? Did you hit a whale?
I have no idea how to sail, so please don’t laugh. Why don’t you put up the main sail with the spinnaker ?
They do address that in the video, actually--seems like with both sails the autopilot couldn't quite keep up, so they took the main down.
@@Mike-ml2pz As someone commented, raise the mizzen! They've on a ketch!
