      @@eumarise8272 There are going to be sacrifices and compromises you make. But two things can help, which helped me atleast.
      One is to have a daily routine you can manage. If you can't study for 3 hours, don't tell yourself you're going to do it. Study as much as you can comfortably without burnout and don't think you can't have fun.
      Second, make a friend or a group to study with. It's easier to make yourself study with the feeling of being responsible for someone else. You feel worse about wasting their time so you fix yours instead.

      @jazb4864 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1347

      @@POPDATA Uh is that why you think they have the highest suicide rates? It has nothing to do with what they're studying. Being a medical student is a full time job with overtime. Literally they cant work. So they have to take out loans not only for tuition but for living expenses for 4-6 years and depending on if they have a family those loans could EASILY be in the $500,000 range. Imagine being hundreds of thousands in debt and having to study 15 hours each day for extremely intense exams for 4-6 years with no break. If your grades arent good enough then you wont be able to get into the residency you've been working towards for the last 8-10 years of your higher education. Not to mention youd be letting down your family and yourself. It only gets worse in your last 2 years of med school when you're actually "working" (you're not paid) in a hospital for 60 hours a week on top of all the studying youre expected to do.

    • @POPDATA
      @POPDATA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +146

      @@jazb4864 I mean everything you said is the consequence of studying something like Medicine and you should know all of that before getting into med school. Taking out loans for living expenses are also common in other fields, if not every field. It shouldn't be easy or affordable to get a certification to deal with human lives... that's why it's literally the hardest and most challenging major. I feel sad for those who go to med school just to please their parents... and I get that even if you have a passion for healing people, somedays you will get tired and you will feel bad, but if you're SUICIDAL about it... it's time to leave ASAP... if the whole process is causing you to have clinical depression then you should start planning how to switch majors or at least get a job that doesn't require a college degree and start saving up

From all those studying all day and all night. Filipino parents don’t understand a crap on how hard their children struggle with their premed. All filipino parents think of basically involves telling everyone that their daughter/son is already a doctor and expect them to give out free check ups on family and relatives. I finally, FINALLY, had a “ah-ha!” Moment. I can’t keep letting other people’s lives affect me that keep me from following MY dreams, MY goals, MY life. I’ve had enough of that. I graduated 2019 …. What I have found is this … medicine is a test of character, how well u can maintain a disciplined routine to study the huge volume … intelligence is definitely necessary don’t get me wrong , as u would need to connect some dots that aren’t obvious at first. But discipline is a huge factor, a bench mark . Not sure where u wanna study but ur basics are gon be life for this journey, so master them ( anatomy, physiology, biochem especially) …. If ur basics are sound, I mean very sound … medical school becomes very interesting and less stressful. Also know the system of the school u are at… it’s helps, it’s not enough to just study… u gotta work the system. Match the specific demands of ur system. E.g at my school, in preclinical years, if u do so well during class tests and practicals, u might qualify for olympiads which if passed exempts u from the normal exams. U got to find some of this opportunities in the system ur in.
      It took me failing my preclinical and starting over again to get the gist, it’s more that just intelligence… discipline is key.
      All the best as u pursue.

    This is the problem with overhyping STEM fields as the careers for “smart people.” I’m a bio major, and deal with imposter syndrome all the time. I feel like I’m averagely intelligent trying to make it in a major filled with super smart people. I feel like when I tell people my major, they’re instantly impressed, and I suddenly feel like I’m living a lie, because I’m average. Truth is, many of my classmates feel the same way as I do. And science just happens to be something I’m interested in, so it’s easier to learn. I’d fail a business class, or really any excel class. I think other majors deserve more credit.
    I’m not saying that STEM majors aren’t hard, but people treat it like you must be so smart to be interested in it. I Many of us don’t feel that way, and it causes us to set unrealistically high expectations for ourselves. We believe our classmates are achieving those expectations (when they aren’t) and that we are the only ones not good enough to be in that field.
    Edit: also I’m not saying that no other field experiences imposter syndrome, just that the “oh you must be so smart” comments that you get in a STEM major add to it. It’s not a bad thing that people say it, but it does unintentionally increase the pressure of imposter syndrome, since you feel like you’re lying to that person.

I always felt behing, not passionate enough compared to others in my class and where I was doing my intership. God I worked my ass out to get to this point after a 4 years degree to get in the highest GPA and find this intership and master’s memoir director and subject to work on. I had a nice internship in provincial security that I worked hard to get, but still all my effort were nothing compared to the imposter syndrome. Left everything, and now I live in the countryside and I work in a farm with chickens and I live in so much less stress! My year of master broke me. Literally.

    For almost every person who applies for medical school, there are interviews that are held to help determine who is considered to be a good fit for such a profession. Naturally, there will be times where students feel the overwhelming pressure and anxiety of screwing up a surgery or losing a patient, but these feelings are normal. Through the course of studying medicine, you learn how to better manage your time, deal with stress, and work under pressure. Those who cannot do these things simply aren't ready and need more help getting there. It's an extremely challenging degree.

      Studies show it only gets worse as we progress through residency. But there are many programs that now have resources for students, residents and attending to help maintain a sense of self, and help identify and manage / eliminate burn out.
      The Personalities drawn to medicine are also prone to perfectionism and lack of self care out of guilt for wanting to not stop until the studies are done or hospital work is finished.
      It doesn’t help that all hospitals are understaffed and there is a culture of a perverse type of abuse bakes into the educational system.

Give urself the space and freedom to explore your interests and you’ll have a better idea if the journey will be worth it for u. Wasn’t sure if I still wanted to be a doctor so I figured nursing was the next best thing. I got one more year before I graduate nursing school and now I’m more open to med school and understand the sacrifices it’ll take and I’m ok with that. Hopefully I’ll be starting med school in the next few years even though I might be a lil “old” by then. Life’s a long journey so don’t give up on your dreams right now. Top tips I would give you is constantly evaluate how you study, I did very well in undergrad but didnt realise until postgrad that I was wasting a huge amount of time. I've been through the same emotions as you have. It was the main reason why I put off applying to med school for so long (0/10 will never do again lol). I feel that there isn't much support and direction given to undergrads trying to apply to med school, which makes them that much more insecure and demoralized. If you need someone to talk to/advise on getting in/what extra recs to take, feel free to message me. good luck on everything :)

      I’m a first year med student and perhaps its not my place to say it, but nurses are- in my opinion - essential to a patient’s overall wellbeing. While doctors treat patients’ disease either via surgery or some other means, nurses provide a wide range of support that patients desperately need, mental support, comfort, medical support- you name it. Without nurses, the medical system would all but collapse. Its tough but far from impossible and it is my firm believe that you will soon be a literal lifesaver in more ways than one. I’m cheering for you!!!

      You can absolutely do it, but just make sure that it is what you want. Make sure you haven't just been seeing what society shows you. There is alot that goes on behind the scenes that will test your passion for medicine and really make you question whether this is what you want to do for the rest of your life. You yourself can do it. Definitely. But the question is whether you really want to do it.

      Better to try, and give it a go, than to not try and live in regret. If you try and then decide its not for you, that's ok! Lots of people change their minds, change their careers etc. Its not embarrassing, you're not a failure. And hey, it might help you discover what you really want to do. 😉 be brave. I believe in you.

      @@goobernational4805 that may be a thing to consider in other careers, but medicine is extremely expensive. You can’t just go “oh well it’s not for me uwu”, by then you’re tens of thousands of dollars (or more) in debt from college, applications, and med school.

      I get what the comments say… about “not being able to turn back” and having a financial hold SUCKS but we always have an option to do what feels right for us. Plus, we need to have a growth mindset, and if we make a decision we will get through it whatever that may be. Remember we must strive for what makes us happy at the end of the day, Ofcourse nothing will be a walk in the park but when we choose our path we just gotta see if it’s worth it. Also, know it’s okay to change things up even years down the line. Sure it’s not ideal but it’s life, things happen. Just give it your best and keep at whatever it is that you’re passionate about!
