Unimogs are close to my heart, back in the 1970's they were used extensively by the SADF, their chassis was used to create mine protected armored vehicles of all sorts, our field worshop had a few which were 'sandbagged' and had no doors or windshields, we did maintenence, swapped engines and running gear under a tin roof over a concrete pad, in the middle of the dense african bush, great memories.
What a great match !! Preservation people looking for this model, and you not having had the time to fully work on it. Nice. Sometimes things just work out.
quite the story, and i think this will translate to new subscribers..making new contacts/friends..and i laughed when you said..'couple of days' and it turned into couple of months..look forward to the event...
Wow, that turned to quite the epic adventure. I hope you do a follow up visit with them once the restoration is complete. Maybe they'll show of the whole collection.
I love Unimog's I still remember the sound of the straight 6 petrol from the Portugues army many years ago in Angola África where I used to live until 1975.
I have a 87' 455 myself, same sound, body, everything lol, I turned around to see if my dad was outside with the backhoe when you started it up lol good ol' tractors. except the damn axle seals where the brake armature goes in lol
Maybe do some work on the Magirus since its not ready to work yet? When the papers came flying by your mailbox you wouldn't want to start doing the little thing then, do you? Otherwise, great find. I like these peaces of history finding their home.
The problem with museums is they never want to pay market price, unless it's fine art. They think that they are charities and rare things should be given to them.
Convinced I saw one of these, with the box on the back, for sale in japan a few years back. Even saved all the pics from the auction, because it was cool, and I was dreaming of how I could import it to Australia.
I wonder if you would be happy with such a great vehicle in Australia. My experience travelling in Australia was, that people are madly obsessed with sitting on 100km/h no matter what vehicle you drive. I was stunned when I got aware of the fact that Unimogs and other vehicles who are not made for high speed often get costly modifications, different transmissions, engines or/and oversized tyres to speed them up - and subsequently become less reliable.
Of course I would be, plenty of people buy Australian ex army unimogs, just, none quite so old. Speed isn't the whole of any vehicles experience. Not all engine swaps or modifications are just to reach or maintain 100kph. Australia has some harsh conditions. Some parts for old vehicles, and their engines, just aren't readily available. The simplest solution to keep enjoying a vehicle, is to repower it with something more serviceable. I have to wonder how many people you actually spoke to regarding it, or, if you just came to the conclusion based on your own assumptions?
Question: Which one of these Mercedes-Benz DOHC Diesel engines would fit in an old UNIMOG: OM604, OM605 or OM606?!? Essentially inline 4, 5 or 6 cylinder engines.

The tractor was a good buy. Your only vehicle with two wheel drive is the one you use the most 😄
Very much looking forward to the next episode! 🙂

He said the Unimog had a 6 cylinder inline petrol engine and was swapped with a 5 cylinder inline diesel.
